Darius' POV The moment her eyes fluttered closed, my breath caught. For one terrifying second, I thought she was gone again but her chest rose, slow and steady, and I forced myself to breathe. She was just asleep. Just resting, but the fear wouldn’t unclench from my gut.My eyes went back to her sleeping figure, and once I caught the steady movement of her chest rising and falling again, the rest of the fear and anxiety seemed to dissolve almost instantly. She looked so peaceful while she slept, and for a moment, it felt like all was well in the world and between us. Until my mind went back to the last couple of hours that is. Kiara had been attacked, and I would only be fooling myself if I thought otherwise. It wasn't a coincidence, and deep down, I thought the fact that she was attacked had to be the worst part of this entire scenario, but I couldn't be more wrong. It was the trauma that came with it. Kiara wouldn't accept it, but she was having a hard time going to bed now.

Darius' POV The council chamber reeked of false civility, and I hated every bit of it. Growing up, and years before I became the Alpha, I used to look up to the council members, why? It was pretty simply back then. They were the ideal image of justice and equality, and their motto was to serve the alpha and their pack with their knowledge, advice and sometimes might. My father had told me I needed their wisdom to become a great leader, but maybe, somewhere along the line, it must have skipped his mind that they were all humans at the end of the day and sometimes, power corrupted even the most tamest of minds. I didn't want to admit it, but right now, every indication was pointing at that fact, and I could only wonder what my father would think of this if he were to find out what had become of his beloved council.
