Anna’s POVThe restaurant was glowing with golden light and laughter. Rissa was busy snapping photos, Nolan kept making silly faces behind her, and Alex sat beside me, his hand warm against my knee. The table was covered with half-eaten plates, glasses of juice, and a little cupcake that said Congratulations, Grad! in uneven frosting. It should’ve been a perfect evening. But all I could hear was the ticking clock behind the counter.5:42 p.m.My heart had been restless since we sat down. I laughed when they laughed, nodded when they talked, but my mind wasn’t there. Every second that passed felt heavier. That note in my bag was all I could think about. Meet me at the rink by 6 p.m.I caught Alex watching me. He’d noticed the way I kept fidgeting.“You okay?” he asked, his voice quiet but firm.I blinked, forcing a smile. “Yeah. Just… tired.”His hand brushed over mine. “You’ve been through a lot this week. We can go home, if you want.”My heart jumped. I wasn’t ready to go home… not y

Alex’s POVI heard it faintly at first… it sounded like a whisper that brushed through my half-asleep mind.“Alex…”My brow furrowed as I turned over, half-awake. Maybe it was just my subconscious again, calling her name in my dreams the way it always did when I couldn’t sleep. But then.. I heard the undeniable sound.A Thud.A sharp, heavy sound. The kind that makes your heart stop mid-beat.My eyes shot open. The space beside me on the bed was cold. Empty, my eyes caught the dresser amidst the darkroom. Her laptop stood lit up and I wondered why.“Anna?” I called, sitting up. No answer. My heart began to hammer. I pushed the blanket aside and turned on the bedside lamp. The glow hit the edge of the dresser and that’s when I saw her.She was on the floor.“Anna!”I jumped out of bed, rushing to her side. My knees hit the floor so hard I didn’t feel it. She was lying on her side, her hair spilling around her face like a dark veil, her nightwear soaked… soaked… in red.My chest locked

Anna’s POVI didn’t even realize I was holding my breath until Alex stepped between me and the officers. His body blocked their view of me completely, his tone sharp, low, and deadly calm.“You can’t take her anywhere,” he said, his hand slightly raised in defense. “She’s still recovering, and you have no evidence. You think I’m letting you drag my wife out of a hospital bed based on a rumor?”The taller officer didn’t flinch. He pulled a folded paper from his jacket and held it out. “We have a warrant, Mr. Quinn. And we do have evidence.”Alex snatched the paper, his jaw tightening as he read through it. His knuckles turned white around the edges. “What evidence?” he asked through clenched teeth. The officer’s eyes flicked briefly to me. “Her skin cell DNA was found under the victim’s fingernails. Her footprints were recorded at the scene. And phone logs show she was the last person Mr. Samuel Grant contacted before his death.”I froze. My heart slammed against my ribs.“What?” I whi

Anna’s POVThe room felt too quiet.Too still.Like the air itself was waiting for something to happen.I lay on my side, staring at the silver cuff biting into my wrist. Every time I shifted, it scraped my skin. A reminder. A prison. A humiliation. Two officers stood outside the door. I could see their shadows moving across the small glass window…one pacing, one still.Every time boots tapped against the linoleum floor, my body flinched.I should have felt safe. But all I felt was exposed.Watched.Hunted.Kristoff’s name echoed in my mind like poison I couldn’t spit out.He set me up.He took the evidence. He knew exactly how to cut me open without laying a hand on me.My throat tightened. My hand drifted down to my stomach…flat…empty.A fresh pain surged through me.It was ridiculous how the body remembers. How the heart fights reality. How hope clings even when everything is already gone.I swallowed, blinking rapidly as the ceiling blurred.I whispered through a shaky breath, mor

Anna’s POVSomething soft pressed against my face… warmth… fabric… breath. Then a scent slipped through the numbness.Lavender.Aunt Flora always smelled like lavender. My eyelids twitched, heavy like they’d been stitched shut. A dull ache sat behind them, then slowly… painfully… the world sharpened.White ceiling. Harsh lighting. A soft beeping sound.Hospital.Again.A muffled voice floated near me… worried but gentle.“…Anna? Sweetheart? Can you hear me?”My lashes fluttered. This time, when I forced them open, I saw her.Aunt Flora’s face. Teary, smiling, trembling.“Anna?”My throat burned, too dry to answer, but my eyes met hers. Her breath hitched… then she gasped and shot up like a startled kitten.“Oh… oh my goodness.. you’re awake! You’re awake!”She didn’t wait… she bolted toward the door.I blinked again, mind still sluggish, foggy, trying to gather the scattered pieces of memory. The officers. The empty hallway. The cold air.The shadow moving behind me.A hand covering m
