Collin's Pov It had been over six hours since Selene left the house, six hours of silence broken only by the ticking of the clock on the wall and the glow of my phone screen each time I checked it, though the numbers never gave me anything new they only reminded me she still hadn’t returned, and I still didn’t know where she had gone. I remained near the door, shifting my weight from one foot to the other, glancing between the clock and my phone as the minutes dragged on; earlier, when she had been leaving, I had tried to follow her, but she had turned back with that tone that allowed no room for argument, insisting she would go alone, and so I stayed behind, left with nothing but the waiting. The longer the hours stretched, the heavier the silence seemed to grow, until I finally decided I couldn’t keep standing there doing nothing; duty outweighed patience, and as her bodyguard I wasn’t supposed to leave her unprotected for this long, no matter what she said. With that though

Selene's Pov The moment the call ended, I just sat there with the phone still in my hand, my chest rising and falling too fast. I tried to steady my breathing, but my mind was a mess, torn between anger at my father and shame about everything else. I needed a moment. Just a moment. But then—three sharp knocks broke the silence. My head snapped toward the door, my heart leaping into my throat. “Ma’am?” Collin’s voice came through, low and cautious. “Are you awake? Can I come in?” Instantly, my palms went clammy. My whole body started shaking before I even realized it Collin. The one person I didn’t want to face right now. I jumped up from the bed and started fussing with the sheets, yanking the blanket into place, smoothing it down as if that would hide the chaos I was feeling inside. My hands were moving too fast, frantic. Another knock followed, gentler but more insistent. “Ma’am? Are you awake? … Ma’am?” “Yes! Wait—just a minute!” I shouted, my voice higher than usual.

Selene's Pov When Colin stepped outside the room, his eyes found me almost instantly as I descended the stairs. For a moment, he just stood there as though the sight of me startled him, and I could see the faint shift of his shoulders, that awkward tension that told me he was trying to compose himself. His hand moved slightly, gesturing toward the table, inviting me to sit, as if he had rehearsed the motion and now was determined to make it appear natural. I walked toward him, my steps unhurried, but I felt his gaze trailing after me in a way that was difficult to ignore. He pulled out a chair, the scrape of wood against the floor echoing in the silence of the room, and I sat down, offering him a polite smile that he returned with a nervous one of his own. “Breakfast,” he said, the single word coming out sharper than intended, as though he had to remind himself what this little scene was supposed to be about. He placed a plate in front of me—pancakes, golden and stacke

Selene's Pov When I woke up, the first thing I felt was the softness of the sheets against my skin and the heaviness of silence in the room. My body ached, but not painfully—just a reminder that I was alive. I stretched lazily, letting out a small yawn, and then turned my head. Collin's was still beside me. He was lost in sleep, breathing steadily, his chest rising and falling with such calmness it made me pause. For a moment, I simply stared. There was something disarming about seeing him like this, without the sharpness in his eyes or the weight of his uniform pressing on his shoulders. Just him. Just a man asleep. I couldn’t help myself—I leaned in closer. His features drew me in as if some invisible thread had tightened around me. His eyebrows were perfectly shaped, his eyelashes unfairly long, almost delicate, giving him a softness that clashed with the hardened soldier I knew he was. There was an innocence to his face, but one laced with a kind of unholy temptation tha

Selene's Pov Oh my God… what did I just do? I did not just—no, I did not just kiss Collins. I almost… almost crossed a line I shouldn’t have with my own bodyguard. My mind was spinning, heart hammering like it was trying to escape my chest. I buried my face in my hands for a moment, trying to steady myself, to remind myself this wasn’t real, this wasn’t something that should happen. But then, against my better judgment, a small, guilty smile tugged at my lips. It’s not… it’s not that bad, I whispered to myself, though I wasn’t entirely sure whether I was convincing myself or just trying to breathe. And then, as if my brain refused to give me peace, my mind wandered back to the party. That night. The one I had… forgotten. The one with the stranger. I still couldn’t remember everything, but there was a flicker—something about him, the way he moved, the familiarity in the touch—that seemed to echo Collins. It was maddening. No, impossible… Collins wasn’t that man. But the memor
