AVERYI WENT DOWNSTAIRS and saw that Fabio and Iris were waiting for me. It was like Iris already knew what was happening, her eyes were wet with tears and she rushed to give me a hug."Don't go," she cried, holding my knees tightly.I sniffled, suddenly overwhelmed with emotions as I rubbed her head. "I'm sorry, baby.""Don't go," she repeated.I crouched and hugged her gently. "I will still see you, okay?" I did not know how true that would be, because I planned to end every communication with Adriano, and even though it tore my heart, I might not see Iris again.I wiped her eyes with my napkin and kissed her forehead. "Be a good girl for your Daddy, okay?"She nodded. "Why are you leaving?" She asked in a small voice.I sighed. That was not something I could tell her. I looked to Fabio for help, he caught on and cleared his throat. "The Doctor has something important to do in her office." He took Iris's hand. "She has to go."I stood up as Mika came, carrying Adriana. She gave me a

"DADDY," IRIS'S VOICE managed to cut through Adriano's drug induced sleep. He came awake slowly, opening his eyes and blinking furiously as he regained his senses. He realized that he was slumped against the doorframe of his room, and Iris was peering into his face, worried and scared. He saw that Fabio was with her. His brother had mixed emotions written on his face. There was disgust, anger, pity, and a little bit of concern too. "Get up!" Fabio snapped, kicking Adriano's leg aside and walking into the room. "Your daughter should not get to see you like this," he muttered under his breath. Adriano staggered to his feet and smiled at Iris, trying to assure her that he was fine. "You look all dressed up," he drawled. His voice was still slurry. "Doctor Avery has gone," Iris said in an accusing tone if she could somehow know that he was because of something her father had done. "Gone?" Adriano asked, turning sharply to look at Fabio. "What do you mean by "gone?" He shook his head t

ADRIANO ADRIANO DRUMMED HIS fingers on the steering wheel nervously as he sped down the highway heading to Avery's apartment. He arrived at the building some minutes later and was not surprised when there was no response to his knocking. It was like she never came home. He peered through all the windows, but they were shut and there was no sign of life in the house.Cursing under his breath, he got back into his car and reversed, speeding in the opposite direction out of her street. He got to her office and banged on the door. He peeked through the window too but could not see anything behind the curtain. He tried the door handle, but it was also locked. He cursed at himself and went back into his car. He sat down there, thinking of his next line of action. He had no plan B. He did not know what to do next.He ran his fingers through his already messy hair in frustration. "Where are you, Avery?" He mumbled under his breath. Suddenly, he remembered Avery's best friend. Emily.Emily w

AVERY"SO HE CHEATED on you," Emily growled."Well, he was not in his right mind," I said. "I don't know. He was drugged... he wouldn't have -""You are making excuses for him!" Emily snapped, standing up. Her eyes were glowing embers of fire as she went to the kitchen, muttering, "I need a drink!" She opened the fridge and scanned what was available, then she cursed, "Fuck. Adam's niece made the grocery list to stock the kitchen up too. Apparently, she doesn't know what alcohol is.""In case you have forgotten, she is 11," I said.Emily rolled her eyes and pulled out a bottle of lemonade. "This would do." She poured out two cups and came back, handing one to me. "So, Adriano cheated. And you are making excuses for him? Saying he was drugged?""He was drugged," I said. "You should have seen him when he came back. He did not look like himself at all. He had a big bump on his head that was bleeding, and he was staggering too because of the effect of the drug.""After he cheated," Emily

ADRIANOADRIANO WAS FEELING frustrated, and that made him angry as he gulped down cups after cups of black, butter coffee. He did not have any appetite for the breakfast that Nana prepared. He did not have the strength to even go to his office today. He sat at his study table, face buried in his hands, and angry at no one in particular."You have to eat," Nana said softly. "You have not eaten anything since you came back yesterday...""I am waiting for any reports from Enzo," Adriano muttered. "He should have something for me.""Yes, but while you wait, you can have breakfast." Nana tried to convince him. "I even brought it with me." She walked into the study, pulling a cart of food behind her. "Here." She carefully arranged the breakfast on his desk.Adriano sighed and forced himself to take some mouthfuls of the meal."What happened?" Nana asked. "Between you and Miss Avery."He shook his head. There was no point in telling anyone because he knew he was a fool to have let it happen
