"It must be easy to villainize me," Adam says, and this time I hear a trace of hurt in his voice."You make it quite easy, yes," I agree. He's quiet for a moment, and I put the kettle on the stove, keeping my back to him. I don't want to see him."I don't plan to separate you and Riya," Adam says suddenly. "You're her mother.""Then leave us alone.""She's my daughter, Cynthia!" Adam raises his voice, frustrated. "You can't keep me away from her. Both of you belong next to me, by my side."My hand tightens on the spoon I've just picked up. "Are you sure there is room for me and Riya there, what with your fiancée still standing by your side? Or is Tina your wife now?"Adam's silence speaks volumes.I close my eyes briefly, struggling to get my wayward emotions under control. "When I found out about your engagement to Tina, I was still foolish. I was foolish enough to think that you would be able to explain the truth to me. I didn't realize that you intended to chain me to your side.""

My daughter has been raised with abundant love, I realize, looking around. She speaks more clearly than most three-year-olds, and there is a noticeable confidence within her. Cynthia adores her. She's made sure Riya has lacked nothing."I want this one." Riya picks up a scrapbook."This isn't a storybook." I take the scrapbook from her."It is!" Riya insists. "It's about the princess in the castle. Mommy made it for me. This one is my favorite!"That's when I realize there are a number of scrapbooks in a corner of the shelf."Your mom made these stories for you?""Yes." Riya quickly clambers into bed. "She even draws me pictures. See?"She points towards a hand-drawn picture of a princess sitting in a chair. It's a simple fairytale about a poor princess who was stuck in a tower by an evil king. As I flip through the story, the plot turns complex and yet childlike, introducing the evil king's two sons, the mean Gustav and the kind Roran.Riya climbs into bed and I pull up her covers, s

But the heavens have decreed something else for me because the heavy weight of my attacker is suddenly gone, followed by an enraged roar. I can hear someone fighting, something breaking, but I hope it's done. My body feels colder now, and I welcome it. I sink back into the darkness, feeling grateful for it all to finally end. However, I feel myself moving.Someone is carrying me.Aren't I dead?"…do something.""I'm sorry."I hear voices, but they mean nothing to me. I cling to the darkness of the abyss, wanting to stay here, away from everything painful. I fought. I fought so hard for my freedom, to have some control of my own life, to be loved. I was meant to only taste the happiness and have it yanked away.Warm golden energy is pouring into me, but my wolf refuses to accept it, driving it back. It wants peace, just like me. It wants to rest, to be away from the world that has only ever been cruel to us. But the warm energy keeps coming back, determined to find a way in.My wolf is

"He did." Lydia gives me a tight smile. "But he didn't realize what you meant until Tony told him. And brainless fool that he is, he thought for sure that once he returned to your side after dealing with everything, you would be willing to have a civil conversation with him. If it was me, I would have smacked a frying pan on his face."My lips curve and my wolf grunts in approval. She smiles back at me. "The world is not over yet. You've faced plenty of hiccups in your journey, honey, and like each time, you're going to pick yourself up and dust yourself off."She strokes back my hair, her voice gentle now. "Sure, it's going to take some time, some for you, more so for your wolf, but you'll get there. I know you will. And I'll be right here with you.""You'll stay?" I ask, her presence reassuring for some reason. "Of course. I took a leave of absence the moment Adam called me. I also gave him an earful. I would have boxed his ears, but he's the alpha, and he also looked like he was on

I'll do it later on once I'm feeling more myself. I don't want him around me when I'm so vulnerable.Fortunately, or unfortunately, I don't have to wait long to see him. I wake up in the middle of the night, suddenly thirsty, and my hand reaches out only to knock the glass to the floor. However, I don't hear it crash to the ground.Opening my eyes fully, I come face to face with Adam, who looks like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar.I stare at him, shocked for a full minute. He's lost weight, a lot of it, and he looks exhausted. When he immediately moves to the door, I grab him by the back of his shirt, growling, "Where do you think you're going?"He goes still, and I realize what I’ve just done. However, my fingers refuse to let go, and he stays like that, his back to me, frozen on the spot. After a moment, he says, “I thought you didn’t want to see me.”“I’m not your biggest fan right now,” I respond, my voice tense, “but I have questions, and apparently, you have all
