CHAPTER ONE: THE MAN BEHIND THE WHEEL

The air inside the Moree estate always smelled like expensive candles—sandalwood and white oud—but to Lauren, it reeked of isolation. Every corner of the grandiose mansion gleamed, from the towering chandelier that sparkled above her to the spotless marble tiles that reflected her every step. Perfection, they called it. She called it a prison dressed in designer silk. She adjusted the strap of her handbag and descended the sweeping staircase, her heels clicking with rhythmic grace. She was the image of elegance—hair sleek in a low chignon, lips painted a sharp wine-red, and a custom Dior suit hugging her body in all the right places. From afar, she looked like a woman who had it all.But up close, Lauren Moree was tired. She reached the front doors just as the butler stepped aside and pulled them open. Daylight poured in, warming the polished floors. The sleek black Mercedes waited at the circular driveway, and beside it stood a man she didn’t recognize.

CHAPTER TWO: THE THINGS WE DON'T SAY

LaurenThe ride home was silent, but her mind wasn’t.She sat in the backseat of the sleek black Mercedes, eyes fixed on the blurred city lights outside, though she wasn’t seeing any of them. Her reflection in the window stared back at her—a polished woman in a designer gown, flawless makeup, and a distant look in her eyes. She looked like someone else. Not Lauren. Not the girl she used to be.And certainly not a woman in love with her husband.Louis hadn’t said a word since they left the gala. Not even a polite, “Did you have a nice evening, ma’am?” He just drove—quiet, steady, professional. But she could feel his eyes in the rearview mirror now and then. Watching. Not in a predatory way. Not in the way men like Richard did. No, his was different.Observing. Studying. And worse... understanding. That unsettled her.Because she didn’t want to be understood. Not by anyone. Espe

CHAPTER THREE: THE SPACE BETWEEN

She stood there in silence, one hand on the curtain, the other still clutching the zipper at her waist. Louis wasn’t checking his phone. He wasn’t rushing to leave. He simply sat in the driver’s seat, hands on the wheel, head tilted slightly toward the house as if he sensed something she couldn’t name.A part of her wanted to go back outside. To say thank you. Or maybe nothing at all.But dignity won.She stepped back from the window and let the curtain fall.---In the walk-in closet, she peeled off the rest of her gown and let it puddle at her feet like silk regret. The silence of the house pressed in around her, too loud, too empty. She changed into a robe and padded barefoot into the bathroom. The tiles were ice-cold beneath her skin, but she welcomed it. A reminder she was still alive. Still feeling. When she turned on the tap and let the hot water run, her reflection caught her off guard. She looked… tired.

CHAPTER FOUR: THE ROOM WAS NEVER MEANT FOR TWO

The Morees arrived at The Sterling Monarch just before noon. It was the finest hotel in Montclair—a sleek glass tower that shimmered under the sun, boasting marble floors, a rooftop bar, and a guest list that included celebrities, diplomats, and billionaires alike. The bellboys greeted Richard by name. Of course they did. He’d stayed here more times than she could count. Lauren walked beside him through the grand lobby, her heels tapping against polished stone, a designer suitcase rolling smoothly behind her. Louis trailed behind them at a respectful distance, his crisp white shirt and dark trousers blending in easily with the professional air around them. She hadn’t spoken a word since they left the house. And neither had Richard. At the front desk, the concierge smiled brightly. “Mr. and Mrs. Moree, welcome. Your suite is ready—penthouse level.” Richard didn’t glance her way as he signed the forms. He didn’t hold her hand. He didn’t look at her when they entered the gold-tri

CHAPTER FIVE: WHERE THE SILENCE SPEAKS

By noon, the hotel suite felt like a cage.Lauren had spent the entire morning wrapped in silence, moving from room to room like a ghost. No sign of Richard. Not even a follow-up text. Just the knowledge that somewhere in this town, her husband was tending to business deals more passionately than he'd ever tended to her.She opened the closet and stared at her clothes for a long while before reaching for the white linen sundress. It hugged her figure gently, stopping just above the knees, delicate straps brushing her shoulders. She didn’t bother with makeup—just sunglasses, lip balm, and her hair pulled into a soft ponytail. She dialed Louis.“Could you drive me to the beach?”---The ride was quiet. The soft hum of the car engine, the rush of wind against the windows, and the occasional glance she caught of Louis in the rearview mirror. His jaw was tight. His hands, firm on the steering wheel. There was something d

CHAPTER SIX: THE SPACE IN BETWEEN US

Lauren stood frozen. The wind toyed with the hem of her sundress, and the waves danced just inches from her toes, but she barely felt any of it. All she could feel was the ghost of Louis’s voice in her ears.> “I get paid to protect you. Not feel anything for you.”And yet he had. She knew it. Felt it. Every glance, every moment of stillness between them was dripping with everything they were too afraid to say out loud. Her hand was still suspended in the air where she’d touched him, fingertips tingling from contact that had lasted barely a heartbeat. She let it fall to her side. And slowly, she turned and walked.---She found him leaning against the car, arms crossed, staring blankly at the ocean. He didn’t look at her as she approached. She opened the passenger door but didn’t get in. Instead, she stood beside it, one hand on the frame.“Why did you walk away?”

CHAPTER SEVEN: JUST LIVE

Louis was different the next morning.Colder.Detached.Professional to the point of cruel.Lauren noticed it the moment she stepped out of the elevator in her beige silk blouse and white slacks. Her eyes found him by the car, holding the door open like always. But this time, he didn’t meet her gaze. Not once. She slid into the seat and buckled her belt, expecting the quiet tension from yesterday to linger. But this wasn’t tension. This was retreat. The drive to the business conference hall was filled with nothing but the low hum of the engine and the occasional blinker click. Louis didn’t look back through the mirror. Didn’t ask if the temperature was fine. Didn’t even acknowledge her presence.Lauren sat still, jaw clenched, resisting the urge to speak. So this is what it feels like to be cut off.Last night, he’d all but confessed that he dreamed about her. That he wanted her. That

CHAPTER EIGHT: SILK SHEETS AND SHARP TONGUES

Location: The Royal Pavilion Penthouse SuitePOV: Richard MooreThe room reeked of luxury and sex.Faint music played from the surround speakers, some mellow jazz Clara had picked on her way out of the shower. She was wrapped in one of the hotel’s monogrammed robes, her damp blonde hair cascading down her back in loose waves. Her skin glowed—flushed from the heat of his mouth, the scrape of his stubble, and the hours they had spent tangled in silk sheets.Richard lay back on the expansive bed, bare chest rising and falling in slow, deliberate breaths. He looked like sin—shoulders sculpted, jaw slightly shadowed, eyes half-lidded in lazy satisfaction.Clara climbed back into bed, straddling him with practiced ease.“You’re quiet,” she said, pressing her palms against his chest. “Thinking about your pretty wife?”He smirked. “I think about deals and digits. Not drama.”Clara pouted. “You always say that. But I don’t se

CHAPTER NINE: MORNING CAME WITH HIM

The knock came softly—like a whisper on the door.Lauren stirred beneath the sheets, sunlight pouring through the tall windows and warming her bare legs. The hotel suite was quiet, the kind of quiet that felt rare. No meetings. No fake smiles. No Richard. She hadn’t bothered dressing yet. Just her silk robe, barely tied, clinging to her like a second skin. She’d planned to enjoy her Saturday alone, maybe order breakfast, maybe take a long bath. But now… someone was here. She slid out of bed, robe swishing gently against her thighs as she padded to the door. She didn’t ask who it was.She just opened it.And froze.“Louis,” she breathed. He stood there in a black T-shirt and dark jeans, hair slightly tousled, as if he’d been running a hand through it nonstop. His eyes flicked over her robe—bare legs, loose neckline, the curve of her shoulder—and heat flashed in them before he blinked it away.“I

CHAPTER TEN: MINE FOR NOW

The morning light filtered softly through the sheer curtains, casting golden hues on the hotel room floor. Lauren lay curled in Louis's arms, her bare skin warm against his, their legs tangled beneath the sheets, their breathing in sync like a quiet song only they knew. She could still feel the aftershocks of his touch on her body—the way his hands had held her like she was the most precious thing in the world. Her head rested on his chest, rising and falling with each steady breath he took, and her fingers lazily traced circles along his abdomen.Louis shifted slightly, brushing a kiss against her forehead. “You’re quiet,” he murmured, his voice husky from sleep and everything they'd just shared.“I don’t want to move,” she whispered. “I don’t want this to end.”“It doesn’t have to,” he said softly.Lauren tilted her head to look up at him. His eyes were half-lidded, his hair adorably messy, his bare chest rising and falling steadily ben
