A deep, throbbing pain radiated from the back of my skull, and when I tried to breathe, something thick and coarse pressed against my mouth, making me gag. My jaw ached from the pressure. I forced my eyes open, blinking against the blurry darkness. It took a long moment for my vision to adjust, and when it did, the shock was so visceral my entire body jerked against my bindings.I wasn't in a normal room. The space was vast, cold, and industrial. The air smelled of damp concrete, rust, and a faint, sickly-sweet disinfectant. The walls were unfinished concrete blocks, and the ceiling was high, crisscrossed with metal pipes and conduits. Harsh, bare fluorescent bulbs hung from long chains, casting a sickly white light that created deep, shifting shadows.
