Rowan’s POVMy eyes snapped open as the sudden sense of danger hit me.Something was wrong.I picked up my coat from the couch, putting on my shoes as I stormed out of my house and began running. Only something, or someone could make me feel this way.The wind and tree branches whipped at my face. I ran towards the source of the danger. Towards him.I hope I wasn't too late. The smell of smoke and scorched metal hit next, thick and bitter made me reconsider. My boots slid on the frost as I stepped out of the trees and froze. Everything was on fire. What used to be a bus lay half-folded down a slope, one wheel spinning weakly, squealing in protest. Flames licked at the sides. The air shimmered with heat and magic, not just any magic, tainted magic, dark magic. There was broken glass everywhere and car parts everywhere. There were bodies too. They were everywhere. Some were still in their seats, others thrown into the snow. Faces frozen mid-scream, eyes wide and glassy. The stench of b

Ember’s POVI groaned in frustration, kicking dirt away.I hated walking beside Rowan. He never said a word, never even looked my way, and somehow still managed to radiate enough judgment to make me want to set his coat on fire. Which, to be fair, I’d done once before. He still hadn’t forgiven me for that. The forest path stretched long and narrow ahead of us, the mist curling low over the ground. Every few seconds, I could feel the tension rolling off him like heat from a furnace. It made the air feel heavier, harder to breathe.Typical Rowan. Always brooding. Always a walking thunderstorm.“You know,” I started, because silence wasn’t my thing, “for someone who needs my help, you’re doing a terrible job pretending you don’t hate me.”He didn’t even glance at me. “I don’t need to pretend.”Ouch.I smirked, pretending that one didn’t sting. “I thought you said well you're still the charmer I remember.”He grunted in response. A real conversationalist, my brother. We moved deeper into

The woods didn’t like Cael.I felt it the moment we crossed deeper into the fog. The air tightened, branches bending just a fraction too far inward, like the forest itself was listening. Ember walked easily beside him, her steps lighter now, her shoulders less rigid than they’d been minutes ago. That alone made me uneasy. Cael moved like someone who knew exactly where not to step. Not cautious, confident. His presence didn’t disturb the forest the way mine did, or Ember’s fire did. It slipped between things.Predatory.“You said you know who took him,” I said finally, breaking the silence before Ember could fill it again. Cael glanced back at me, still smiling. “I said I know who ordered it.”My jaw tightened. “Then start talking.” He chuckled. “Straight to business. I like that. Makes things simpler.”“It makes things faster,” I snapped. “And we don’t have time.” Ember shot me a look. “Easy, stormcloud.” I ignored her. My focus stayed on Cael’s back, on the faint shimmer around him t

Rowan povThe ruins bled cold. The moment we crossed the boundary line, the air shifted dense, resistant, like walking into deep water fully clothed. The fog thinned here, curling low to the ground as if afraid of what lay beneath it. I felt him. Not clearly. Not cleanly. But enough. My chest tightened, a low ache blooming just under my sternum. It wasn’t painful. It was pressure. Direction. Like something inside me had locked onto a signal it refused to let go of.“He’s close,” I said.Ember glanced back sharply. “How close?”I shook my head. “I don’t know. But it’s stronger than before.” Cael slowed, his expression unreadable. “The ruins respond to proximity,” he said. “Yours especially.”“Then keep moving,” I replied. “Before they realize I’m here.”We descended through broken stone steps, the walls narrowing as we went. Runes flickered faintly along the rock older than the ones used by the Order, more primal. They pulsed as I passed, reacting like nerves under my skin. The ache in

POV: SEBASTIANThe air still vibrated around me even after we’d cleared the last of the falling stones. My lungs burned, my chest still ached, and every nerve felt frayed, as if the shadow had touched more than my mind. Rowan’s hands were firm on my shoulders, grounding me, though his own tremor was barely noticeable. Ember and Cael flanked us, both scanning the ruins with sharp, wary eyes. Dust fell in lazy streams, settling on my hair and clothes, but I barely noticed.“You sure you’re okay?” Rowan asked again, voice low but edged with something I didn’t want to name. Concern, maybe fear.I tried to laugh. It came out as a strangled sound. “Define okay,” I muttered, dragging myself upright. My knees threatened to buckle.“You’re alive,” he said, and that should’ve been enough, but it wasn’t. Not really. The ruins groaned behind us. Stone shifted as if breathing, the faint embers of light pulsing along the cracked walls. The air smelled of smoke and iron, and somewhere deep, I could
