“Everyone, stop. Alright, you,” Lindsay said, pointing to one of the young men. “Tell me what happened.”“There was this…thing in the field walking around. It was weird. It looked kind of like some weird bug/human hybrid of some kind,” he said, shaking his head the entire time he spoke.“What color was it?”“Maybe greenish,” he answered.“I thought it was more of a white,” another man said.“It looked kind of silvery to me,” the young woman said.“If you didn’t catch all of that, it was some kind of insect/human hybrid that was green, white, or silver in color, just north of town in a field,” Lindsay told Wren.“OK, I will have a team head out there now. I will be at your office in a few minutes to speak with them myself,” Wren told her, then hung up.“Agent Gold wants to speak with all of you about what you saw, and he will be here shortly,” Lindsay told the group as she put her phone back in her pocket. “This is not what I was hoping for as far as all of you being introduced to this

Lindsay looked at all of them and saw them all begin to smile at his question. “Is that the only question anyone has?” The group nodded and said yes to her as they looked at each other, then back at her. “None of you can officially start until you graduate from the academy. However, you are all welcome to come in and ride with the deputies when you have time off from training. By doing that, you will cut down on your field training time if you do decide to work here after graduation. That will also allow you to see what happens around here before you make a final decision to work here,” Lindsay said. “After you have come in a few times and I get feedback from the deputies you work with, I will know more about scheduling and be able to tell you more about which shifts and days you would be working.” “I would like to add something to what Sheriff Gold has told you,” Max said as he walked around to stand beside Lindsay’s desk and faced the new prospective employees. “I have known Lin

Lindsay neared Little Bob’s house, turned onto the side road where he had asked her to meet him, and, within a couple of minutes, pulled into the river access. As she did, she saw Little Bob sitting by the river in a folding chair, fishing as usual. When she exited her car and walked closer, she noticed he had a second chair ready for her beside him. There was also at least one more chair still folded, and a cooler on the other side of his chair. “A little early in the year for fishing, isn’t it?” she asked him as she sat down beside him. “It is never too early in the year for fishing. It is, however, a little early in the year to catch a fish,” Little Bob told her as he handed her one of her favorite orange sodas from the cooler beside him. “Thanks, Bob. So what is it that you need to talk to me about?” “Max and Big Bob are going to be joining us in a few minutes. I think I should wait until they get here.” Lindsay asked, “You’re not quitting, are you?” “No, of course, I’m not.

“Are you alright?” Wren asked as soon as he answered her call. “I’m fine. I had the wind knocked out of me by Big Bob, but that’s it. Is Randy on his way here? Bob’s hurt and it is more than I can treat. He will need some stitches,” Lindsay told him. “Randy is on his way now and should be there in a few minutes along with my new employee. They will get Big Bob put back together. They might even make a few improvements to him,” Wren said. “That is a nice offer, but I like him the way he is. How long will it be before you get here? “Not long, only a few minutes.” “Good.” “I know you aren’t injured, but are you alright?” Wren asked. “I don’t know yet. Bob got hurt because of me. If I had seen it, he wouldn’t have needed to do what he did.” “Don’t think like that. You are out there because Little Bob asked you to be there. It wasn’t your idea, so blame it all on them, not yourself.” “You and I both know that isn’t going to happen. I am going to go back and check on Big Bob. I wil

“Tell me exactly what happened,” Wren told Lindsay after seeing the bandage on Big Bob’s neck. “We were having our meeting. I started to feel like we were being watched. We were packing everything up, and we heard a growl. We stopped what we were doing, and there was another growl. Just after the second growl, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye, and before I could do anything, Big Bob hit me from behind and pinned me to the ground. I felt it hit him and could hear yelling and gunshots, but I couldn’t see what happened.” “OK, let’s go make sure the guys are getting packed up and that Izzy hasn’t made Randy hide in the car with the doors locked. She is a lot like her big sister and seems to delight in tormenting him.” “Oh, you will have fun with that,” Lindsay laughed.Lindsay and Wren turned and walked toward where Little Bob’s car was parked. They waved to Max and Big Bob as they left the river access in Big Bob’s truck. Little Bob had everything packed and was leaning a
