***~CHRISTIAN~***Deciding to get married to Claire wasn't part of my plan. Marrying her was the last thing I wanted to do. But when Maverick suggested he would pay her off and give her a good life if she kept the baby, something shifted inside me. I remembered my own mother. She must have gone into hiding when she realized she was pregnant. Imagine a common stripper carrying a famous billionaire's child. It would have caused quite a scandal. But Maverick had found her and told her the same thing, that he would pay her off and give her a good life if she let him claim me as his son and if she returned with him. And naively, my mother had agreed. Only for him to murder her. I fisted my hands in anger. The bastard was trying to make history repeat itself. So what would happen after Claire had the baby? Would he kill her off like he did my mother? I couldn't let that happen. Maverick looked up at me in surprise. "What did you say?" He asked. I looked him dead in the eye and repe

~CLAIRE~ I sat there quietly, listening to Christian and his family talk about me like I wasn't sitting right there with them, like I was invisible. I didn't mind though. I was used to it. But from carefully observing them, I realized a few things. Years of being in the shadows of other people and quietly observing had taught me how to read people's true intentions and emotions. Christian was completely unreadable. I couldn't tell what he was feeling, especially with the dark scowl which was inscribed permanently on his handsome face. But I knew instantly that he and Ophelia weren't exactly besties. There was clear hostility between them, even though they tried to keep it hidden. I noticed it in the way Christian glared at her, in the way his voice turned cold when he addressed her, or when he replied to her. But Ophelia was different. I knew instantly that she loathed Christian. Yet I couldn't tell if she hated me too, or if her kindness towards me was genuine. I looke

***~CLAIRE~***It took me a while to get a taxi. All through the drive home, I stewed in anger. Christian kept accusing me of things I was innocent of. First it was on the cruise ship, when he thought it was a paid whore. Then now, he thought I deliberately told his father about the pregnancy because I wanted money and I wanted to marry into his family. Even though I badly needed money, I wouldn't stoop so low to getting it that way. And I didn't want anything to do with him and his family. He was the one who suggested marrying me. I never planned for any of this to happen. My simple life had been disrupted, yet somehow, he was the one who was upset. I wish I had talked back to him more, instead of sitting there, stuttering while he accused me of things I didn't do. A few minutes later, the taxi pulled up in front of my apartment. I paid the driver, left him a little tip, and dragged my tired feet through the front door. I was feeling nauseous again, and I was hungry. I tosse

~CHRISTIAN~ When Claire walked into the club with two of her friends from the company, looking like she just stepped off the cover of a model magazine, my heart did a double take. I didn't expect my body to react so strongly. I hadn't really noticed her figure before, mainly because she dressed in baggy t-shirts and jeans. But looking at her now, I was stunned speechless. She was breathtaking. Her figure was to die for. I felt I could wrap both my hands around her slender waist completely. Her hips flared out perfectly, giving her the perfect hour-glass figure. I realized then that I'd never really paid keen attention to her, never really noticed the beauty behind those nerdy glasses and freckles. I watched her from the private lounge at the top of the club. I could tell she looked uncomfortable. She didn't want to be here. And knowing Claire, her friends must have dragged her here. She shouldn't be here though. She should be in bed, resting. She was carrying my child.

~CLAIRE~ Christian's sudden display of violence astonished me. I peeked at him from under my lashes, watching as he wiped off the smear of blood on the counter with a napkin and tossed it aside. He appeared calm, too calm for someone who just smashed a guy's face into the counter like it was nothing. He looked at me for a brief second, then turned away as the bartender returned with a bottle of vodka. There was just something so irresistible about him in casual clothing. "Are you okay?" I finally looked away, wishing he would leave. He was the last person I expected to see here. "I didn't ask for your help." I murmured. "I'm not some damsel in distress." From the corner of my eye, I noticed his frown. What was he expecting? Gratitude? "You're welcome anyway." He replied, his voice mildly sarcastic. I took another sip of water and totally ignored him, but he drew closer. I could smell the tang of vodka in his breath. "What are you doing here, Claire? You should be ho
