As I stood staring at the closed door, I couldn’t help but think of everything I’d missed out on. My inner wolf didn’t want to leave. It took an almost physical force of will to turn away and walk back to my truck. Once I got moving, a new desire filled me. I needed to see Nora and ask her what the fuck was going on.Even with the rage threatening to take me under like an unexpected storm, regret still washed over me, settling deep in my bones. I’d lost a decade and a half of my boy’s life, and that time would never come back. I never had the chance to hold him when he was a baby. I’d never laugh at the way he smeared food on himself in a high chair, or cradle him as he cried from a bruised knee. It was like losing someone you loved. My inner wolf writhed in misery and equally in anger. My anger hadn’t abated by the time I arrived at my sister's house. If anything, it has worsened. All I could do was think about how one secret had done so much damage. To me, to Emery, but most importan

The conversation with Nora went a bit better than I expected it to. I was an alpha, and with that came the blessing and the curse of being able to sense lies from members of my pack. Nora told me the truth. Her remorse appeared real, and there was no way to go back in time. All I could do now was move forward. That son of a bitch is dead, yet somehow he’s still making my life hell. He simply couldn’t let me be with Emery.Again, crushing regret and sadness threatened to overwhelm me. I already told Emery we’d accept Leo into the pack. She said she’d talk to the kid about it, but I'm anticipating his reply desperately. I really want to be in his life, I hope he also wants that as well. I don't know if I should tell the pack about him yet. In returning to Moonridge, I’d taken on the mantle of pack alpha. Everyone had been all for it because the pack likely wouldn’t have survived the ensuing chaos from not having an heir. It probably would have splintered, or worse. Now I was in charge o

Once the swing came to a stop, I stood and turned back to the house. I walked across the yard and up onto the patio, never once turning back to acknowledge Jaxon's presence. I hoped he knew how badly he’d hurt me all those years ago. Regardless of whether or not it was based on a lie, it doesn't make my heart hurt a little less, heartbreak was heartbreak. The deadbolt on the patio door gave a final snap as I locked it, and I couldn’t help but wonder if that was the final door being closed between us.Sleep came in fits and starts. All through the night, I kept waking up from nightmares. Some were about Jaxon stealing my son from me, others were about me reliving the soul-crushing heartache of when he first left. The worst one that totally robbed me of a good night rest, was of Jaxon's father, dead and rotting like some movie zombie, crawling from his grave. He scratched and clawed with bony fingers, trying to drag Leo from my arms and down into the grave with him. After that, there wa

The knife slipped in my grasp, my sweaty palms making it hard to cut the onions for the baked potatoes. According to Emery, it was Leo’s favorite, and by God, I was going to make sure this dinner was perfect. I’d already fished out the cheese, sour cream, and butter in small serving bowls, and bacon was frying in the pan to crumble over the potatoes. I couldn’t think of anything else someone might like on them.“I’m back,” Caleb said as he entered the kitchen, hauling in a few grocery bags. “Did you get everything?” I asked, and even I could literally hear the stress and worry in my voice. He put the bags down and looked at me. “Dude, calm down before you cut your fingers off.” He nodded at the cutting board.I set the knife down and nodded to myself. I was a nervous wreck, the last thing I needed was for me to be some psychotic mess when Emery and Leo showed up. I took a deep breath. “Yeah, I need to calm down. I’m good, though. Did you get everything, though?” Caleb pulled out a few

“You know, I can’t get over how much you look like me. It’s almost eerie. Like’m staring at myself when I was fourteen.” Jaxon said. Leo grinned, but I could tell he was a little uncomfortable with attention being called to his uncanny resemblance with his father. I swooped because I don't think he will be giving more than a grin. “It does sort of look like he stole your face, Jaxon,” I said with a smile. “Do you have any pictures? That way, he can see for himself?” Wiping his hands on a dish towel, Jaxon said, “Yeah, actually. Let me show you.”Striding across the room, he took a picture frame off the bookshelf near the door and handed it over to Leo. It was a photo of him and Caleb when they were right around Leo’s age. Leo’s eyes widened in surprise. “Oh, wow,” he said with a chuckle. “I thought you guys were exaggerating.” “Nope. You got his face.” I glanced at Jaxon. “Can’t deny he is yours even if I wanted to.” I said jokingly. Jaxon gave me a pensive smile, like he couldn't dec
