NICOLEMason and I go our separate ways because he has to go back to work and I, in turn, have to take care of my phone situation, and I haven't forgotten that Roman's driver is downstairs, waiting for me in the car. I'm a nervous wreck and it's hard for me to stay focused when I have the invitation and The Bruiser on my mind. I can't begin to imagine why he decided to follow me and Mason and have the invite glued on the door with his number. I made it pretty clear that I wanted nothing to do with him. I'm sure about that. I get the phone situation resolved as quickly as possible. I buy a new phone, go to my service provider, and everything is sorted. I sit with my brand new phone in my hand, suddenly second-guessing myself. Should I go through with this? Calling The Bruiser feels like walking into something from which there is no return. He was an asshole to me. So, what does he want now?I ask Roman's driver to drop me off at home. I've got a few hours until I'm meant to have di

NICOLEI step back and stare at my reflection in the mirror. I'm dressed pretty formally in black dress pants and a satin blouse. My hair is tied back. I mean business and I want The Bruiser to know that.I drive to the location of the restaurant. I second-guess myself until the last possible second, when I park the car."Here we go," I whisper to myself, reaching for my bag on the passenger's seat.I walk into the restaurant and someone comes to me right away—the manager. "Good afternoon. Do you have a reservation?""I'm actually here to meet someone.""The name?"I freeze. I have no idea what his name is and I can't very well say that I'm looking for someone named The Bruiser."I...I'm not sure.""But this person is here right now?""Yes."She walks away and I'm waiting at the front desk. I glance at the door, contemplate leaving. Hm, why not? Maybe this is a sign that things won't work out.But the manager returns and escorts me to my table with a smile. As I follow her, I take not

NICOLEAs soon as Roman walks through the door, I know I wasn't mistaken over the phone and something is so damn off about him.I just don't know what it is. He won't tell me.He walks toward me and kisses me, but he doesn't grab me the way he usually does or joke around. We have the apartment to ourselves because Mason went on a date with his colleague and he told me he'd likely sleep over at her place. He even packed a bag. I didn't tell him Roman would be coming over, but I don't think there'll be a problem. My hope was that we'd spend some time together and have fun. Unwind. It's been a hectic few days and I want nothing more than to forget my problems in his arms.I even made dinner. But he's so off. He hadn't said ten words to me since he walked into the apartment and sat down on the couch. He's staring at the wall, deep in thought. His silence is slowly starting to frustrate me.I hand him a plate of carbonara, which used to be his favorite dish whenever he came over, but he ba

NICOLEI'm sitting across from Sebastian while the lawyer, a woman in her late forties, is seated at the head of the table, wearing a bright pink shirt with strawberry blonde hair.Of course, Katie would have a woman like this as her lawyer. She folds up the letter Katie left for both me and Sebastian, and I'm literally fighting back tears because I feel honored. Though she didn't have much left because of how much she dedicated to charities and other non-profit organizations to help women in need, she said in the letter that she made sure to leave a piece of herself to the two people in the world whom she loved the most. The fact that I'm in this letter is...I can't even explain it. Katie cared about me so much, and I just wish I'd called her more often or gone to see her. Sure, we spent a lot of time together when Wings of Grace was still operating, but now that she's gone, there's a gaping hole inside of me that won't close for a while."Well. Now, I'll detail exactly what was left

NICOLEI step out of the shower and find Roman waiting for me. He's sitting on the edge of the bed with a towel around his waist—he showered in the other room—and as soon as he sees me, he stands up.He's definitely calmer than he was before we got to the penthouse. I can even say that I see a whole lot of remorse written all over his face. Yes, he should feel ashamed of his behavior as of late.I don't even recognize him anymore."Could we talk?""If you're going to tell me the truth of what's really happening to you, Roman, then sure. Otherwise, forget about it."He closes the distance separating us in a few strides. "Nikki...I don't know how else to tell you that it's the same old bullshit that's plaguing me. Nothing more, nothing less. I've got problems, yes, but they're not significant enough for me to share with you."I turn my head to the side, not sure if I believe him or not. He cups my cheek in his hand and forces me to look into his eyes. "Tell me you believe me.""I don't.
