An echo in the night

Ashley’s POVWill dropped me off at home a little later than we had planned, because we were having a good time, and neither of us wanted it to end.It felt so good to simply enjoy a night out rather than sit at home, fretting about all the things that I didn’t have any control over. The house was silent and shrouded in darkness when I entered it, which meant that Aurora and Janet were already fast asleep.I slipped off my shoes and moved as quietly as possible through the house to check that the back door was locked, while being careful not to wake anyone. Then I headed to my room and went straight to bed.I fell asleep almost immediately, something which was rare for me nowadays, but sometime past midnight, a crash jolted me up from bed.The noise echoed through the house, loud and violent. It was the noise of breaking glass, which was definitely the kind of sound you didn’t want to hear in your quiet house in the middle of a dark and moonless night.A cup must have fallen and broke

The conclusion

Ashley’s POV“This has gone on too far and for too long, Ashley. Can you see now? Can you see that it wasn’t an animal like you thought, but those same people? They’ve started entering the house. Who knows what's next they're going to do?” Janet asked me, beginning to cry.She kept glancing at the broken window, at the space where someone had stood long enough to throw something into our home, and even worse, where they had climbed in uninvited to leave a note.I hated the fact that my problems had turned her into a sniveling, terrified, and emotional wreck. This person was so different from the Janet I used to know.“So what do you propose we do, Janet? And don’t say go to the police. You already know I won't do that. You weren't there with me in that dungeon. You didn’t hear when those people threatened me never to go to the cops, no matter what. If you did, the thought wouldn’t even cross your mind.”“But you’ve flouted one of their instructions by coming back into town. You can al

Confusion and hurt

Ashley’s POVI couldn’t help but notice how tired and worn out Jeff looked. He was still handsome, but he looked like a man who carried the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. There was silence for several seconds after I sat down, but I didn’t bother to break it. They were the ones who summoned me here, after all, so it was left to them to break the silence and explain what I was here for.It took several seconds for me to realize that they were trying to intimidate and throw me off with their silence. I nearly burst out laughing when I realized this. Finally, after about two minutes of silence had passed and it was clear that I wasn't going to speak, Jeff cleared his throat and adopted a stern expression that looked very comical on him.“I’m getting reports about you from Claire again, Ashley. There are unfavorable reports about how rude you are and how you ignore every single instruction given to you. This was the same reason why you were demoted in the first place, and I'm

Out in the open

Ashley’s POV“Well then, since you're pretending not to know what I’m talking about, Jeff, let me jog your memory a little. Claire here is mad because I stopped following the instructions that you told her to give to me.” I said to Jeff.“And what instructions might those be? The ones you have to follow so that you can get better at the job? Is it a crime for me to expect you to be good at the job that I'm paying you to do? Is it a crime that I asked one of the highest personnel here to mentor you personally? Do you know how many people would die for that opportunity? ” Jeff asked, his tone tight and offended.Claire cut in immediately. “You see, she can't even stand or obey leadership. I honestly don’t know why you're granting her this audience, Jeff. Just get security to bundle her right out of the premises.”Bitterness piled up within me, and I continued to talk to Jeff as though she hadn’t spoken. “No, I'm talking about the instructions you gave her to pile the work of ten people

A much-needed break

Ashley’s POVThe rest of the day crawled by very slowly. I hardly stepped out of my office, but the atmosphere surrounding the place was tense the few times I did step out. It was clear that something was in the air. There were hushed whispers everywhere, but I blocked my ears and didn’t pay any attention to all of them. Claire was nowhere to be found, and so I didn’t have much to do by way of work. She hadn’t come back to the office since our confrontation with Jeff, and I had no idea where she was, but I couldn’t care less. Her absence was exactly what I needed. Later on that morning, my intern friend, Andrea, came into my office, peeping in surreptitiously first to make sure that Claire wasn’t around.“Ashley, what happened between you and Claire this morning? The whole office is agog with all sorts of rumors. Jeff has been calling people into his office all morning. It seems to be a serious affair. The human resources manager has been in Jeff's office for hours!” She told me, sitt

The apology

Jeff’s POVI sat alone in my office long after Ashley left, staring at nothing, and replaying the past months since she started working at my company like a horror movie.Everything suddenly began to make sense, and all the missing pieces began to fall into place one after the other. For someone like me, who deeply prided himself on being a stellar boss and made the work environment so conducive for his employees that his company was one of the most sought-after by workers in the fashion industry, this was such a huge blow to my ego and principles.Claire cleared her throat, interrupting my thoughts. “Well, don’t tell me you believe all the nonsense that woman just spewed. She's a consummate liar.”I had even almost forgotten that she was still here. I stared at her, and she must have seen something in my eyes, because she looked away uneasily.“You may leave my office now, Claire. There’ll be an investigation into Ashley’s claims, and if it turns out she was right …” I let the words

A false sense of security

Claire’s POVNothing, I mean absolutely nothing, prepared me for what happened today. It was the rudest shock that I had ever faced in my entire life.I had fully expected that when Jeff summoned Ashley to his office after I reported her to him, she would cower as usual, and whatever had gotten into her in the past few days would disappear, because she would be scared to lose her job.Nothing of the sort happened. Instead, she had sat there and boldly accused Jeff and me of things. Jeff, of course, had no idea of what she was talking about, and to my great annoyance, he actually believed her and wanted to carry out a damn investigation.I still couldn’t wrap my mind around how Ashley, who used to be quiet, desperate to please, and was always apologizing, even when she wasn’t at fault, suddenly turned into someone else entirely overnight. She had sat there stoically and looked Jeff in the eye, speaking without a single iota of fear. I never saw this behavior coming. If I had, I would

The order

Claire’s povI lowered my eyes in embarrassment. “No, Dad.""So what the hell are you talking about?""Em, well, we ... Jeff and I have never dated in the sense of the word. We’ve … done, er, … stuff together, but he never agreed to put a label on what we had.”“So you’ve been lying to us this whole time? You led us to believe that you were both in a committed relationship. Hell, you led us to believe that you both were well on your way to getting married!” My father said coldly.I hung my head and swallowed the bile in my throat. There was nothing I hated more than not having my father’s approval, which was why I lied to him about my relationship with Jeff in the first place.Jeff had always told me that he wished he would end up getting married to someone in the fashion industry, because then he could leave his fashion company to his wife to run, while he dealt with the other companies he had. So, of course, I had thought he was talking about me. Even if he wasn't, I was a perfect

An unexpected visitor

Jeff’s POVIt had been a hell of a day, and the last thing I was expecting, or needed, was a late-night visitor. It was close to midnight when my doorbell rang insistently, disturbing the silence in the house and interrupting the work I was doing.I ignored it, hoping that whichever one of my domestic staff answered the door would tell whoever it was that I was sleeping or I wasn’t around, or some other excuse. That didn’t happen. My housekeeper knocked on my study door a few minutes later and poked her head in almost immediately. “Mr. Wilson, I’m so sorry to disturb you at this odd hour, but Ms. Claire Anderson is here. She seems very distraught and agitated. I’ve ushered her into the living room downstairs and given her something to drink.” The woman told me.I barely resisted the urge to groan aloud. The identity of my unexpected visitor was even worse than I imagined. I had figured at first that it was probably my sister, who had come to plead with me to visit our father again.

A suspicious goodbye

Jeff’s POV“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I asked her incredulously.“What does it look like I’m doing, Jeff? I’m trying to remind you of what you’re missing, of course! I can make this right, you know. There's no need to throw away what we have on account of a nobody. You and I have always enjoyed each other. It would be a shame to stop now, wouldn’t you agree?” She smirked, taking a step forward.I didn’t move or say anything. I just stared at her. The pity I felt earlier had now turned to disgust.“Well?” She said sultrily, reaching her right hand expertly behind her back to unhook her bra.“Don't do that. Put your clothes back on, Claire,” I told her tiredly. She froze, clearly unable to believe her ears. “Jeff …”“Put them back on now. I have more than a few domestic staff living here, as you well know. Do you want someone to walk in on you naked? Also, I'm not interested, so that will be doubly embarrassing for you.”She hesitated, humiliation flickering across her f
