Ashley’s POVHer shoulders sagged, and shame entered her eyes, but she shook her head. “I wish that were the case, because maybe it would make what I did less morally wrong, but the truth was that I did it because I was offered money. I should never have accepted, especially considering how nice you were to my children and me, and once again, I am sorrier than you would ever believe or imagine.”“I see,” I said coldly.“The only excuse I have is that at the time, things were very bad for us. My son was very sick, and I didn't have the money to take him to the hospital. I didn't know what to do.”“I want to know how it happened. Who were the people who offered you money? Did you know why they wanted you to tell these lies?”“I'm sorry, but I don’t know the answer to either question. I do remember that there were two men. They told me that if Jeff ever came around asking about you, I should tell him that you had confided in me about leaving him for a rich man. They didn’t give any expla

Ashley’s POVMy breath caught in my throat. I stared at the message, which was sent less than two hours ago. Help me? What on earth was going on? Why would Janet of all people need my help, considering how we parted the last time we saw each other?I quickly dialed her number and raised the phone to my ear. It rang and rang, but there was no answer. I pulled the phone away slowly, staring at it and wondering what was up with that.If she had been desperate enough to send that message, then why wasn't she answering her phone? I called her again, but still, the phone went unanswered. Maybe it was nothing then.Maybe she had sent the message in a moment of panic, but enough time had passed that everything was fine now, and she was back to not wanting to hear from me. I could just go home and forget all about it.After all, I didn't owe her anything … not anymore. But even as the thought crossed my mind, different scenarios, none of them good, kept springing up in my mind. What if she wer

Ashley’s POVAt first, I didn't find anything suspicious or weird-looking. Most of the papers that were littered around on the floor were official files, invoices, and other official-looking documents.I dropped my phone on the floor, using it to secure the stack of envelopes containing the threats, and moved like a robot around the room, my eyes scanning the mess of papers on the floor.I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I had found identical threatening notes to the ones I used to receive in Will's bedroom. So what was the theory here? Now wasn't the time to ponder on any of that. I was looking for something, but I didn't know what. All I knew was that I had to find it and leave this place before Will came back.My gaze landed on the only drawer in the room that hadn't been pulled open. It was almost untouched, but not quite. A few sheets of paper peeked out from the gap inside it.They were crumpled and uneven, as if they had been shoved inside it in a hurry. My pu

Jeff’s POV By the time I wrapped up things at the office that night, it was already far too late to go and see Ashley. Seeing and talking to her was all I had wanted to do all day, but I had been so busy all day. I leaned back in my chair, rubbing a hand over my face as exhaustion overcame me.The office was very quiet, almost eerily so, with only the faint hum of the air conditioner in it, and the occasional burst of conversation from the security people downstairs to disturb it. A soft knock came on my door, and at my quiet ‘come in,’ one of the cleaners poked his head in.“I'm sorry to disturb you, sir, but I wanted to ask if you're almost done?” he said.“Ah, yes, I am. I’m sorry to have kept you waiting for this long.”“Oh, no. It isn’t a problem, sir. These are my usual work hours. Besides, I was cleaning some other offices and only just finished.”“That’s good, then. I’ll pack up my things and be out in a moment.” I informed him, and he retreated. As promised, I made quick

Jeff’s POVI had just remembered one of Ashley’s friends from the office, named Andrea. Andrea was an intern, but she has since completed her internship and left.Hopefully, she and Ashley would still be in touch, and she would be able to tell me something about where she could have gone or whom she could be with.I didn't have Andrea’s number, but I could easily get it. I pulled out my phone immediately and called my assistant. She sounded surprised to hear from me, no doubt because I never called her outside of work hours."Hello, get me Andrea's number, please," I said without preamble. There was a brief pause as she wondered if she had heard right. "Sir?" "You remember the intern Andrea, who worked with us a few months ago? I need her number now. Please treat it as urgent," I told her."Of course, sir. I'll do that right away," she responded quickly.I ended the call and then began to pace agitatedly. Less than two minutes later, my phone dinged, signaling that a text had come in
