The pack hall is more alive than I've seen it in months.Music echoes off the gray stone walls and torches burn bright along each pillar on opposite sides of the hall. They throw golden light over the tables crowded with food and wine. The crystal chandelier hanging high glows with a soft white light that sets the tiles sparkling, and on each table is a vase of the silver moon-roses grown only in the Silvercrest pack. They glow softly under the lights, some - a bright white, and others - different shades of gold. For a moment, I stand at the lip of the stairs and just watch. The sight of the hall feels magical tonight, like something out of a storybook, and I'm surprised I could arrange it all in under a day. I glance down at myself, smoothing a hand over the fabric of my dress as it falls in soft, elegant folds around my legs. The gown clings to my waist, draping across my body in a way that feels both graceful and commanding. The bodice is a deep, velvety black that curves off my sh

The moment the potion touches her skin, magic explodes.Lucy screams.Light erupts across the hall like lightning tearing through the sky and the cauldron shudders beside me, the potion inside it suddenly boiling violently and steaming with a thick smoke that overflows, drifts towards and wraps around Lucy.Shocked gasps and frightened screams come from the crowd as Lucy's body jerks backward as if something invisible has grabbed her."What's happening, mummy?"Jack's hand is in mine and his body is plastered to my side as he watches his nanny scream and fight with magical smoke. All I can do is hold his hand in mine and squeeze lightly.Through everyone else's eyes, Lucy is surrounded by the smoke erupting from the glass cauldron, but through my sight something else is happening. I see threads of gold and silver shoot out of the cauldron, wrapping around Lucy and glowing as they absorb the dark magic powering the illusion wrapping around every inch of her body. The illusion flickers u

Destiny's pov. When Coren declares my innocence... When he says the words I've been waiting to hear ever since that night I was arrested on my way out of this pack, I expect something to fill me.I expect a deep feeling of satisfaction to rush through me, or a great sense of vindication for all my years of suffering to fill my heart. I expect to feel more, but there's nothing. Inside is only a small sense of fulfillment.Silence fills the hall after Coren's words and it's heavy. It's the type of silence that presses on the chests of everyone in this room and makes them remember the things they did to me that they'd rather forget.I meet the gazes of members of the Elders' Council, look at the faces of the men and women that once sat down to decide I would not be allowed to leave the pack for killing Tracy, or have children of my own because I was a murderer and a plague on the pack.I meet the gazes of the men and women, warriors and servants alike who mocked me when I passed the hall

The hall doesn't feel as magical as it did at the beginning of the party now.Jack's hand around mine is in a tight grip and his bottom lip is wobbling shakily. There are tears gleaming in his eyes, and my heart tears with grief at the sight of the pain he's going through.I knew tonight would be painful for him, but no amount of preparation could have made me able to see Jack this way. Coren takes another step towards me, his voice strained from the pain of the broken bond."We can fix this, Destiny." He insists, "Now that the truth of Tracy's death is out, everyone in the pack will act better. We can make this right from now on."The thought is tempting but my heart is already set, "That isn't how this works, Coren."Coren's jaw tightens but he takes my other free hand in his and stubbornly refuses, "It can, Destiny. The truth is out now.You can be the Luna you were always meant to be.""Coren," I meet his gaze steadily, taking my hand away from his grip and holding down on every wo

I run without thinking of all the clothes I'm leaving behind, or all the people I might have wanted to say goodbye to once upon a time.I run because I know if I don't, Jack's tears or Coren's pleas might shackle me to the pack once again.I don't think of anything I might need to take along with me, I just run and keep running, Thea's paws pounding steadily on the soft forest earth even as we pass the Silvercrest borders.Tears roll down my cheeks when I breathe in the air, my body and mind officially outside the pack for the first time since I decided I wanted to leave six years ago.I'm out but that only makes me want to go further. I keep running even when Thea's legs shake. After hours of pushing myself forward, Thea forces me to stop, changing back into human form and letting out exhausted whines in my mind. She's tired, but it's like a hunger has been lit up in me and it won't be sated until I'm as far away from the Silvercrest pack as I can be. I keep moving, walking in the dr
