Lahat ng Kabanata ng Taboo: Ties and Sins : Kabanata 191 - Kabanata 200

The midday sun scorched the large stone courtyard, turning the air into a shimmering mass that seemed to vibrate over every surface. The sweet scent of orange blossoms mingled with the earthy aroma of freshly turned soil and the aged fragrance of roses, creating a combination that was almost suffocating, yet strangely alive. Clara felt her veil sticking to her forehead with sweat, the warm fabric chafing her skin as she balanced the heavy bucket of water. Each step on the uneven pavement made her legs tremble, and the effort of carrying the liquid seemed to multiply the tension still burning inside her since her encounter with Gabriel three days before. The memory of his strong hands gripping her arm, of his gaze that pierced not just the habit but her very essence, returned incessantly. Every recited prayer sounded hollow, incapable of dispelling the heat coursing through her body. Sin, repeated the voice of the Mother Superior, echoed in her mind, but desire was a current that could

The midday sun scorched the Convent of Santa Luzia, turning the courtyard into a cauldron where the air seemed to shimmer with heat. The oppressive silence of the convent was broken only by the erratic buzz of a bee and the distant echo of the bell announcing the hour of prayer. Clara, however, was not with the other novices in the oratory. The Mother Superior, with her penetrating gaze, had sent her on a trivial task: organizing the tool shed at the back of the garden, an aged wooden structure that exuded a strong smell of mildew, resin, and damp earth. Clara knew she wouldn't be alone. Gabriel, the gardener, had been called to help, and the prospect of being so close to him, isolated from the nuns' watchful eyes, made her blood pulse with a mixture of fear and desire. The shed was a claustrophobic space, with crooked shelves crammed with rusted hoes, blunt shovels, and moldy seed bags. Light filtered in through a small, dusty window, casting golden beams that cut through the air thi

“We can’t tell anyone,” she said, her voice trembling as she hurriedly put her habit back on, her fingers clumsy with the buttons. The veil lay dusty on the floor, and she picked it up, adjusting it with hands that would not stop shaking.Gabriel, already buttoning his pants, nodded. His face was serious, but there was a glint in his eyes that said he didn’t regret a thing.“I won’t tell,” he said quietly, wiping the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. “But this, Clara… this doesn’t end here. You know that.”She wanted to protest, to say it was a mistake, that it would never happen again, but the words wouldn’t come. He was right. What they had done was a line crossed, a consummated sin that couldn’t be undone. She left the storeroom without looking back, her body still throbbing with the memory of him, his scent clinging to her skin. That afternoon, during vespers, Clara sat in the oratory, the rosary clenched tightly between her fingers, but her mind was far from the

The night swallowed the convent with primal fury, the storm roaring in the sky like a beast set free. Thunder made the stone walls tremble, and lightning tore through the darkness, illuminating the courtyard in flashes that felt like divine accusations. Rain fell in thick curtains, turning the garden into a swamp, the scent of wet earth and crushed leaves saturating the air. Clara stood in her room, heart pounding, the crumpled paper of the anonymous letter trembling between her fingers. The words echoed in her mind like a sentence. The crucifix on the wall, bathed in intermittent moonlight, seemed to judge her, its wooden eyes nailed into her like spikes. She had not slept; paranoia and desire fought inside her, each thunderclap amplifying the fear of being discovered and the craving for Gabriel. He had learned of the letter that morning, in a hurried meeting in the orchard, where words were exchanged in whispers, his dark eyes filled with worry. They had arranged to meet in the gard

The night in the industrial district was a vacuum of silence and shadows, broken only by the solitary headlight of a security car or the distant howl of a freight train. That silence was murdered by the siren. It wasn’t a single alert, but a strident chorus drawing closer—a wave of sound and red light that tore through the darkness. First the patrol cars, then the deeper horn of the fire trucks. The warehouse on Rua dos Ourives—a giant of exposed brick, abandoned for decades—was spitting fire through the broken windows of the first floor. The flames danced, voracious orange and yellow, reflected in the filthy puddles on the asphalt, bathing the façade in infernal, throbbing light.Inside Truck B-17, Devon felt the engine’s vibration in his body like a second heartbeat. His fingers, wrapped in heavy gloves, adjusted the closure of his fireproof jacket with automatic precision. His eyes—normally a calm gray-blue—were already scanning the building, assessing, calculating. The smell of sm
