Chapter 1

Susan Moore glanced up with an ambiguous smile when she noticed my stunned expression. "Women need to be raised in luxury. Otherwise, they'd find such opulence astonishing despite being surrounded by luxury goods all the time."I, Lauren Smith, didn't respond to her veiled sarcasm. Instead, I smiled faintly at her. "I can offer you eight million dollars for the gemstone, Ms. Moore. However, you've just been appointed executive director. Why sell this?""I'm selling this to buy my partner a birthday present. The other day, he gave me another pigeon-blood ruby. Do you have any similarly priced watches?" she asked.A flicker of hope still lingered in my heart. What if this was just a coincidence? What if the handwriting was just similar?I then asked, "Would it be possible to see a picture of him? I can then recommend something suitable."Yet, my heart sank as soon as I saw the image. My father, Jason Smith, was happily embracing Susan, his gaze full of joy. It was a stark differenc

Mom was sitting on the couch, which was also my bed. She was wearing an old, patched-up shirt, the only gift Dad had ever given her. "What's wrong, Lauren? Should we call Dad home? He recently lost his job, and he should be interviewing at the job fair."Using that excuse, Dad hadn't come home for three days. Just then, Susan updated her status. "He said I needed to socialize, so he bought a golf course for me."Mom's hands were swollen from years of hard labor, but the hands Dad held in the picture were fair and slender."Mom, Dad's having an affair."I dared not look at her and silently lowered my head."Lauren, how could you say such a thing?" Mom exclaimed. "He's only been away for a few days. He's doing this for the family!"I simply pulled out my phone and showed her the buyer information for the luxury jewelry purchased today. The handwriting, his appearance, and his ID were all a perfect match.I immediately presented more evidence."Mom, Dad's been faking being poor fo

Mom hesitated. "But he's so influential. Can we really get a divorce?"Because we were poor, I was bullied a lot as a kid. Dad never stood up for me, which made me very vengeful. Since he owed us so much over the years, I was determined to make him pay.I nodded. "Trust me, Mom."I found Jennifer Aguilar's contact details. Jennifer was the famed news anchor whom Susan had ousted. "I'll give you a juicy story that can have you restored to your initial position," I told her."Alright," she replied.Yet, the purchase records alone weren't enough to prove Dad's infidelity. Susan's social media posts never revealed his face either. Thus, using the expensive watch as an excuse, I personally paid her a visit in BC.After I delivered the watch, she happily fished out her phone and took pictures. She then sent him a voice note. "This is my present to you. Will you pick me up at work later?"He also responded, and Susan opened it without hesitation. "Susie, your companionship is the be

When I arrived at the scene, I didn't just see Mom lying on the ground. Susan was there too, shaking her head in dissatisfaction and facing the camera."You asked her such trivial questions? How are we going to boost ratings? You even brought on such a useless interviewee! She fainted from a bucket of cold water?"I walked over to help my mother up. Her hands were ice-cold, and she was soaked through and through.Nobody paid me any attention. The camera footage played once more, and the host's aggressive voice spilled out."Do your monthly wages as a helper cover your family's expenses? It seems barely enough to make ends meet. Where's your husband? Or are you a widow raising your child alone? Your daughter must have grown up without a father's love. She might end up going down a dark path!"A few days ago, Mom said she found an employer who paid well. She'd already signed a contract and couldn't back out. I only found out today that she'd signed with BC.Susan wanted to exploit

When she heard this, Susan's red lips were curved into a sneer. "That's probably because your mother's not attractive enough, which is why even a poor man like your father had to keep a mistress."When she said this, she didn't notice Dad's evasive gaze.I then held onto the flaw in her words. "If a man's infidelity is just 'keeping a mistress', then what does that make you?"Everyone at the station knew that Susan and my father weren't legally married. Since he was their boss, they stayed quiet. Since I dared to be direct about it, many of them secretly cast admiring glances my way.Susan flicked a strand of hair from her ear disdainfully and stepped forward to grab Dad's arm. "This is true love, and we are each other's soulmates. Of course it's different."Her voice turned icy, as if passing judgment on me."Jason, this woman hit me over her lowly mother! Not only did your employees fail to stop her, but they even mocked me!"She pointed at her swollen cheek and disheveled hai

"Why won't you divorce her when you clearly love me?" Susan exclaimed in despair.I rolled my eyes. "Feigning responsibility now, eh, Jason?"Dad instinctively opened his mouth to speak, but Mom gave him a piercing stare and only said, "I want a divorce."He froze, never expecting Mom to utter those words. With a stern frown, he questioned, "Anna, do you know what you're saying?"As a child, I was curious about why Dad always had an air of superiority when he told Mom off. Now I finally understood that it was in his nature."Are you deaf?" I retorted without hesitation. "Didn't you hear that Mom's asking for a divorce?"Facing Jennifer's camera, I took out my phone to show everyone the marriage certificate as I listed out all the grievances my mother had suffered through over the years. "This man is the real boss behind BC, but he kept the truth from us for 30 years."I held up my mother's hands, which were covered in chilblains. There was not a single adornment on her.I confr

When Mom was taken to the hospital, she was diagnosed with anemia-induced heart disease. The doctor attributed it to long-term malnutrition along with excessive exhaustion.Jennifer's live broadcast clip had gone viral online. Everyone now knew Susan was a homewrecker, and the comments poured in. "She has the face of an angel but acts like a demon!""The man's got issues, too, alright? Pretending to be poor to watch his wife and daughter struggle, huh?"…Susan rushed to the station for a live broadcast to explain. She said that she and Dad were each other's first loves, and it was Mom who came in between them. Naturally, people were drawn to strength. As such, some viewers argued that Mom wasn't good enough for Dad, which was why his rekindling old flames was understandable. However, an unknown employee who disliked Susan leaked the tape of her interview with Mom.Every word the host spoke came back to haunt Dad like boomerangs. More comments poured in."How ironic. The

I worked at a luxury retailer that sold secondhand goods. My employers valued me because I naturally had some skills. I also had a very keen eye for numbers. After reviewing the station's daily transactions over the past few days, I noticed something fishy—Susan was embezzling company funds to leave the country.I tracked down a customer who used to work with Susan at the same place and asked about her.I then learned that she racked up gambling debts abroad, which was why she returned to Hayworth. She sought out my dad, and this sucker was willing to spend money on her. I wasn't the only establishment she sold jewelry to, either. All that money went toward repaying her debts. What my dad thought was a long-awaited reunion was actually her carefully planned scheme. He authorized Susan’s appointment. If that were exposed, he would be held jointly liable.…Dad was blowing up my phone. I thought he was going to blame me for exposing their finances, but instead, he kept asking a
