Lahat ng Kabanata ng The Devil's Pair (The Road Devils Motorcycle Club 4): Kabanata 11 - Kabanata 20

Jolene Angeles gazed out the cabin window at the lush green of the Rockies, falling in love with them all over again. She was a pretty recent arrival to Colorado – after being born and raised in New Mexico – and a big part of the draw to the state had been the mountains. Years of looking at them in photos had just cemented her belief that the Rockies were the most breathtaking backdrop for a life, any life at all. So when Jo had been looking to get the hell away from her physically and emotionally abusive husband, Brian, she’d gone looking for accounting jobs in Denver.Coming to work for The Road Devils motorcycle club had been, without a doubt, the craziest and the best decision that she’d made in recent years, maybe in her entire life. From the word go, she’d been welcomed and respected, treated better by a bunch of rough-and -ready bikers than she had been by her own husband. She’d escaped her marriage one weekend while Brian was away at a law conference, just packed a backpack a

“Oh, God.” He felt her knees go under her, and he slid his grip down her body to hold her tight. “Is it to do with – with Brian? Are the guys in trouble with the police?”“Let’s sit, OK?” He led her over to the massive sofa where they’d made love just an hour earlier, Jolene writhing under him, her nails scratching his back as she came, her sweet lips parted and her face flushed. She was deathly pale now, though, small and afraid, and Silver hated that. But he hated to lie to her more, so this conversation had to happen, as much as he cursed himself for scaring her.Jo held Silver’s hand in both of hers, his other hand light as a baby’s breath on her cold cheek. Her dark eyes searched his face as he spoke, looking for any evasion or holding back, but he told her everything: he explained what Ice had seen over in New Mexico, and what (and who) he hadn’t seen. Silver told her about Briley and the twins on their cross-country hunt for a safe spot for the ex-cop to land. He filled her in

Briley clicked through the online property listings, musing yet again how much farther her money went in Pennsylvania. She had no real idea where she wanted to live, but as long as she had a mere, fleeting glimpse of the Appalachians from a single window, she’d feel pretty content. Bonus points if that window was in her kitchen or living room, where she could sit and drink coffee and just soak in the view.Thinking of the view drew her eyes back to the window above the desk that she was sitting at. There was nothing glorious about it, as it was the opposite wall of the hotel, and she frowned at that. She wasn’t enjoying feeling trapped or stifled, like she was at some kind of metaphorical dead end in her life. She knew it was temporary, but still… she’d been under Gideon’s slimy, sickening thumb for so long that any sense of being held back was bad for her head space. She had options, though, and she reminded herself to be nothing but grateful for that: before becoming a cop, Briley h

She shrugged, sipped her drink. “I was named after my Dad’s sister Annette, but she was a real nightmare. By the time I was about ten, she and my parents had completely fallen out, so I started going by my middle name. I liked it better, anyway.”“Ohhh-kay,” Dux said slowly. “That all makes sense. But from Morris to Cross?”“Cross is my birth name,” she explained. “When I was fourteen, my Dad was killed in the line of duty, and Mom remarried two years later, to Edmund Morris. She legally changed her last name, and my name too, but I never felt like Briley Morris, you know? So as soon as I was out of the house, I started telling everyone that my name is Briley Cross. I never legally changed it, just because I knew that it would really hurt my mother for me to do that. She died a few months ago, and I could officially be Briley Cross but now I doubt that I ever will, with current circumstances being what they are. So you see…” She smiled at the men. “The house will be purchased by Annet

“I – I –” Briley took refuge in more sweet, blessed alcohol, hoping that it would take the drowning edge off the wave of longing that had just washed over her. “I really can’t.”“How come?” Dux asked in a conversational tone, like she was refusing a second helping of pasta at a dinner party. “Why can’t you?”“Because… “ She screwed up her courage to talk about this, and she thanked God that she’d already told them about some of it. “Because of – of Gideon. Because of what Gideon did. I’m not ready for any kind of… of physical thing, not with even one man. But two men, and two men at the same time? That feels…” She swallowed. “That feels really impossible.”They were silent now, all teasing and flirting gone. She continued:“I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t tempted, despite what he – what happened to me. I mean – I’m very, very tempted. You two are unbelievably sexy, and I’m curious what it would be like, and I suspect that you guys are great at what you do. But…” She stopped, turn
