The rain in Sector 7 didn’t wash the city clean; it just turned the atmospheric soot into a greasy, toxic sludge that coated the throat. This was the Lower Hab-Zone of Aethelgard, the sprawling capital of the Unitary Corporate Republic. Down here, the sun was just a rumor, blocked by the massive atmospheric processing towers and the crisscrossing sky-highways of the wealthy districts miles above.Ren Walker sat hunched over his desk, his posture folded like a carpenter's ruler. He was twenty-one, but the harsh blue glow of his monitor made him look older. His skin was pale, translucent from lack of sunlight, and dark, purplish circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. But he wasn't looking at the monitor. He was staring at a small, crinkled piece of thermal paper taped to the side of his computer tower. It was a grainy black-and-white ultrasound image. A tiny, blurry bean-shape floating in a sea of static."Hey there, kid," Ren whispered, his voice raspy from disuse. He touched the p

TIME: 03:00 HOURS.LOCATION: SECTOR 4, "THE HELIX" RESIDENCES.ACCOUNT BALANCE: 42,500 CREDITS.The silence of Sector 4 was expensive.Down in the slums of Sector 7, silence didn't exist. The night was a cacophony of sirens, screaming neighbors, and the relentless, industrial thrum of the atmospheric processors grinding overhead. But here, on the fortieth floor of the Helix, the silence was absolute. It was thick and heavy, insulated by triple-paned, bulletproof smart-glass.Ren Walker sat in his ergonomic leather chair, staring at the panoramic view of Aethelgard. From this height, the city almost looked beautiful. The neon rivers of the maglev highways wove through the skyscrapers like arteries of liquid light. The smog that choked the streets below was just a hazy purple mist from up here, softening the jagged edges of the dystopia. He took a sip of water. It was filtered, chilled, and tasted like nothing. It was the best thing he had ever drunk. He rubbed his eyes, feeling the fam

TIME: 22:30 HOURS.LOCATION: THE TIER 2 LOBBY (CUSTOMIZED).MOOD: EUPHORIC."Check this out! Look at the particle effects! I’m literally glowing!"Tank was spinning in circles in the center of the Lobby, which was currently skinned to look like a floating dojo in a sea of neon clouds. His massive, terrifying grey enforcement armor was gone. In its place, he wore the newly released "Golden Paladin" skin.It was ridiculous. It was glorious. The armor was polished gold with glowing blue runic etchings. Massive pauldrons shaped like lion heads sat on his shoulders, breathing digital steam. Every time he moved, little sparkles of light trailed behind him like fairy dust."You look like a disco ball had a baby with a tank," Jinx laughed. She was sitting on the edge of the holographic table, her avatar swinging its legs. She was wearing her new "Shadow-Stalker" set—sleek, violet leather with a hood that trailed smoke and a mask that displayed a shifting 8-bit emote. Currently, it was a xD fa

TIME: 19:00 HOURS.LOCATION: SECTOR 1, "CLOUD 9" SKY-LOUNGE.ACCOUNT BALANCE: 68,000 CREDITS.The crab didn't taste like processed algae paste. It tasted like the ocean—briny, sweet, and incredibly rich.Ren watched Maya take a bite. Her eyes widened, and a genuine, delighted laugh escaped her lips. She covered her mouth with a hand that was no longer rough from scrubbing floors, but soft, manicured, and adorned with a simple silver ring."Oh my god," she whispered, swallowing the morsel. "Ren, this is... I didn't know food could taste like this. It’s like eating a memory of something I never had."They were sitting on the terrace of Cloud 9, the most exclusive restaurant in the Unitary Corporate Republic. It was located on the 100th floor of the Apex Spire, piercing the cloud layer. The atmospheric smog that choked the lower city was miles below them. Up here, the glass dome overhead revealed a clear, star-filled sky—a view that 99% of Aethelgard’s population would never see in their

TIME: 13:00 HOURS.LOCATION: SECTOR 4 UNIVERSITY LIBRARY (PUBLIC TERMINAL).STATUS: INVESTIGATING (LAYER 1).Ren sat in the back corner of the University Library, a massive brutalist structure of concrete and stained glass that smelled of old paper and ozone. He had pulled the hood of his charcoal sweatshirt low over his face and wore sunglasses, despite the dim, dusty lighting of the server stacks. He wasn't using his own high-end rig. He wasn't even using his encrypted laptop. He was using a Public Access Terminal—a battered, grease-stained console with a sticky keyboard—that he had rented with a "Guest Pass" bought from a broke student for twenty credits. He wasn't looking for "dead gamers." That was too broad. That would flag the algorithms instantly. He was looking for the Version History. The Admin had welcomed him to Aegis Online v4.2.Ren knew software development. Version numbers meant history. If there was a v4, there was a v3. And a v2. And a v1.Ren didn't want to know the
