Judy’s POV The morning sun streamed softly through the hospital windows. My mother was still resting, her chest rising slowly with each breath. I had stayed by her side all night, afraid to leave even for a minute. Sophia sat beside me, scrolling quietly on her phone, her legs crossed, looking exhausted but alert. I tried to sleep, but my mind was racing. Thoughts about David, the contract, my mother’s surgery, and my broken heart swirled like a storm inside me. Everything was moving so fast—marriage, hospital bills, strangers who felt closer to me than old friends. Sophia leaned back and stretched. “Girl… you look like a zombie,” she said softly, glancing at me. “You even forgot to eat anything last night.” “I couldn’t,” I whispered. “Mum… she’s my mother. I can’t just leave her alone. And everything else… it’s too much.” Sophia nodded quietly, understanding. She didn’t ask questions. She never did. She just sat there, holding my hand when my fingers twitched with worry.
