The illegal test comes at night.Of course it does.No envoys. No seals. No courtesy.Just motion.I’m already awake when the land spikes — sharp, sudden, directional. Not a ripple. Not a probe.A breach.“Southwest,” I say, already moving. The Alpha is beside me instantly. Eldric and Riven converge from opposite directions, drawn by the same unmistakable pull. The land doesn’t hum this time.It jerks.Someone crossed without permission.Fast.Multiple bodies.“They didn’t touch the corridor,” Riven says grimly as we reach the ridge. “They cut through raw ground.”Illegal. Deliberate. Provocative. The boundary lights flare — not bright, not defensive — signaling intrusion without response. The system is waiting for instruction. That’s the test.If we overreact, we confirm fear.If we hesitate, we confirm weakness.Shadows break from the treeline below — five wolves, moving hard and fast, no formation, no restraint. Raiders. Not soldiers. Hired muscle.“They’re heading straight for the

The cost doesn’t come immediately. That’s how you know it’s real.By morning, the outer settlement is quiet. Too quiet. The refugees remain exactly where they were instructed to stay. No movement. No defiance. No second incident.Which means the problem isn’t them. It’s us.The land feels… heavier. Not strained. Weighted. As if it has accepted a truth it didn’t want and adjusted accordingly. The hum is lower now, slower, carrying a subtle ache that settles deep in my bones.Riven notices it too.“You absorbed that surge,” he says when he finds me near the inner markers. “Again.”“I contained it,” I reply.“You internalized it,” he corrects. “There’s a difference.”I don’t argue. My hands are still trembling slightly, even hours later. The Alpha calls a closed council before midday. No observers. No trainees. Just the core leadership and those tied directly into the framework.Eldric speaks first. “The system compensated last night. Automatically.”“That’s good,” Maren says cautiously.

Retaliation doesn’t come with teeth. It comes with withdrawal.By morning, the outer settlement is silent in a way that feels deliberate. Patrols are doubled, yes — but not aggressively. No displays. No warnings sent outward.Instead, the land begins to… close. Not sealing borders. Not hardening markers.Just refusing to cooperate.Trade paths that once smoothed themselves underfoot grow uneven. Familiar shortcuts lengthen subtly, forcing detours. The air itself feels heavier beyond our boundary, dulling speed, dulling certainty.Anyone sensitive enough to notice will feel it immediately.Anyone powerful enough to matter won’t be able to ignore it.Riven stands beside me on the ridge, arms crossed. “You’re isolating us.”“No,” I say calmly. “I’m removing convenience.”There’s a difference. The Alpha watches the land’s response carefully. “This doesn’t violate accords,” he says slowly.“No,” Eldric agrees. “It just… stops helping.”The land hums — steady, resolute.Serik’s strength rel

Serik doesn’t respond to rejection with anger. He responds with precision. The night after Kael declines, the land is too still. Not peaceful — alert. Like something holding its breath.I feel it first in the conduits. The flow doesn’t break, doesn’t spike — it thins, like a thread being drawn out carefully instead of cut.Targeted.Intentional.Riven feels it seconds later. “That’s not pressure,” he murmurs. “That’s invitation.”Serik has changed tactics. He isn’t offering power anymore. He’s offering relief. The pull doesn’t come from the edges this time. It rises from within our territory — from someone already tired, already stretched thin.I know who it is before the name forms.Elin.She doesn’t hold rank. Doesn’t lead patrols or command decisions. She manages the conduit balances — the quiet, constant work that keeps the land from tearing itself apart under strain. She’s been compensating since Jarek fell.Absorbing overflow.Smoothing instability.Never asking for credit. And

The first person to consider becoming a node isn’t desperate. That’s what makes it terrifying. It’s Mara. She’s been with us since before the borders stabilized. She trains patrol leaders, mediates disputes, and knows how to make people listen without ever raising her voice. If there’s a moral center to this place, people point to her without realizing they’re doing it.Which means when she asks for a private meeting, my stomach sinks. She doesn’t sit.Neither do I.“I want you to hear this from me,” she says calmly. “Not through whispers.”Riven stands near the wall, arms crossed, unreadable.Kael isn’t here. I didn’t invite him. This isn’t a debate.“Go on,” I say.Mara breathes in slowly. “I’m considering volunteering.”The words land cleanly. No dramatics. No apology.Riven’s jaw tightens. “You can’t be serious.”“I am,” she replies, still calm. “And I want to explain why before you decide what this means.”“I don’t get to decide,” I say quietly. “That’s the point.”She nods. “Exa
