After about half an hour, the crowd gradually settled.Alex spoke again, his tone steady. "If it feels like too much, you can stay in Oakhaven Gardens. Just be ready to deal with whatever risks come later. Everyone's struggling. Personally, I think staying together is still safer. What do you think?""Captain Landon, are you moving?""I can't afford a place yet either, but I'll find a way to earn the points and go.""If you're going, then my family's going, too.""We want to go, but how are we supposed to earn that many points?"Seeing how firm Alex was, even those who had hesitated began to waver. After a moment, hands went up one by one. Most of them had only been here for the past two years. They trusted him.Without Oakhaven Gardens, many of them might not have made it this far. If they were going to stick together, it had to be with people they knew. They all remembered the gangs at the resettlement site. To take over apartments in Oakhaven Gardens, the gangs had grabbe

Nicole's group finished up early. On the way back to Building 5, Nicole noticed a patch of land not far away, now covered in green, and walked over to take a look. The women and children of Oakhaven Gardens hadn't been idle. For the past two weeks, they had been clearing and planting without pause.Corn had already sprouted. The vegetables were thick and healthy, close to harvest within a week. But no one planned to eat them yet. They carefully pulled up the seedlings and replanted them to expand the yield. Once they matured, they would be dried for storage or traded for points.People might be small, but when they set their minds on something, they could be relentless. They hadn't just reclaimed the land inside the compound. They had pushed outward, taking over every patch of ground they could. The patrols had more work now, but no one complained. After two days of rest, Nicole decided it was time to head into the mountains for timber. The nearby hills had already been stripped

Plant mutation? After everything the environment had been through, it made sense. Survival meant adaptation, and adaptation meant change. There was no point in dwelling on it. Nicole stored the plant and decided to let it grow. They searched the area again, combing through it carefully, but found nothing else.So they went back to cutting wood. When Nicole got tired, she returned to searching for herbs. They stayed in the mountains for about six days. By then, they had cleared several sections of forest. They kept six truckloads of timber for themselves and could easily contribute more than a dozen loads. They didn't rush to leave. Instead, they spent extra time searching for medicinal plants.Over the next few days, Nicole gathered about 60 varieties. Most were common, but there were a few rare finds. A young valeris, several ironbloom plants, along with rubecor and emberberry.Nicole nearly went cross-eyed looking for them. The job demanded way too much staring. She needed re

The spreading stain of blood in the water caught the other man's attention, and he instinctively turned around.A few seconds later, he dropped into the water with a loud splash. The two girls lay half-drowned in the shallow pool, gasping for air. When they saw the body floating beside them, their faces drained of color. Their lips trembled, but no sound came out.Only then did they look toward the bank. A figure stood there, fully armed, face hidden.Nicole didn't linger. She turned and headed back. The girls snapped out of it, scrambling out of the water. They shook as they looked around for somewhere to hide.By the time Nicole returned to the grove, Zeph had already finished dealing with the others. The place was in chaos. The air inside was thick and foul. They searched quickly and found several pounds of mixed grain.Nicole drew her blade and cut through the locks on two cellars. The one on the left held about seven women. Their hair was disheveled, their clothes were in

Nicole and Zeph worked one day and slacked off for three. No wonder progress crawled. It took more than a month, but they finally turned in batch after batch of timber, stone, sand, rebar, and tiles, scraping together 60 thousand points.Nicole looked over the list of tradeable supplies. It was all basics: food, clothes, alcohol, and the like. Nothing she needed. She lost interest in saving up any further. With that much material turned in, a lot of space had opened up in the storage space. She could expand planting again.Zeph didn't want Nicole to tire herself out. "Why don't we find Weasel and see if he can get us a seeder and a harvester?"That made sense. They were just waiting for the new district to be finished anyway. Might as well keep busy.Except Weasel had disappeared. They searched the trade street for several days and found nothing.Nicole remembered that the last time he showed up on that old bike, he had mentioned that his colleague, Bob Harrington, lived somewh
