"Three hundred yards northeast," Thorne said, very quietly, from the corner. "Garth confirms. Two have separated from the group. Moving south." Moving south meant moving toward the pack house. Moving toward the gift signal she'd opened twelve minutes ago, which was still open, still broadcasting — she was doing maintenance work on Sera's recovery, the real session and the lure simultaneously, because she'd decided that the best cover for a signal was an authentic one. She felt Strand before Garth's signal came. Not through the gift — through the mark on her wrist, which she'd expected to be nearly cold by now and wasn't. It had flared the moment the session opened, which confirmed that the tracking thread she'd thought was dissolving had not entirely gone. The curse was gone. The thread was a remnant, and the remnant was active, and Strand was following it. She kept the session steady. She kept her breathing even. She kept her hands with Sera's and the gift moving in its careful, c

"He's not coming for Black Hollow," Maren said. "He never was." The council room was full. Maren was at the far end of the table, which was where Wren had been when she first joined the council and which she understood now as its own kind of position — visible, included, carrying the awareness that the room was still deciding what weight to give you. Calix was beside him. The two of them had spoken for two hours the previous night, in the holding room, with Thorne present and silent and taking notes. She didn't know what had passed between them. She hadn't asked. Some conversations were not hers to have access to. "Explain," Cain said. "The attacks on Black Hollow," Maren said. "The informant chains. The forced pairing development. All of it." He laid his hands flat on the table — her gesture, she noticed, the visible statement of openness. "They were designed to accomplish two things. First: draw the Ashford healer out of hiding and into an active working posture. Second: demonstr

"The formal position requires a designation," Thorne said. He set the document on the workshop table with the air of someone who had been waiting to produce it for some time and had chosen this particular morning because it was the right one. "I've been working on the language." Wren looked at the document. "Healer-Advisor to the Black Hollow Council," she read. "It's not precedented," Thorne said. "There's no historical model for what you are, which is both a healer functioning in active capacity and a council member with advisory authority. I had to — construct the designation from the pieces that were available." He paused. "The alternative was inventing a title wholesale, which seemed excessive." She looked at the document. At the formal language of it, the careful wording, the blank space at the bottom where signatures went. There were three signatures already: Garth, Brynn, and Thorne himself, each in the specific handwriting she'd learned to associate with them over two month

"It's gone," Asha said. She said it with the matter-of-fact quality of a professional noting an observation, but Wren could hear the layered meaning beneath it — not just gone in the sense of visually absent, but gone in the sense that whatever the mark had been communicating to Asha's wolf-sense was gone too. Wren looked at her wrist. Clean skin. No discolouration, no warmth, no trace of what had been there for two months. She pressed her finger to the inside of her wrist — the spot where it had been. Nothing. The absence was total. "When?" she asked. "Overnight, I think," Asha said. "I noticed it this morning when I came for the session check." She paused. "How does it feel?" "Different," Wren said. "Not worse. Just — different." She turned her wrist over. The absence was a kind of information too. "The mark was there long enough that I stopped noticing it. Now that it's gone, I notice the going." "Like a sound you'd habituated to," Asha said. "Yes." She looked at the clean s

"Vorik withdrew," Thorne said. "Confirmed this morning by Rissa's network. The formation has moved back to Shadow Fang's southern territory." He set the report on the workshop table — Thorne brought everything to the workshop now, which had become the informal centre of the pack's information flow in the way that informal centres developed, through repeated use and established trust. "He's not gone. He's strategic." "I know," Wren said. "Maren predicted this." She looked at the report. "How long?" "Rissa's assessment is six months minimum before he's ready to try something new. Her read of his operational pattern suggests he doesn't move until he has a complete plan." Thorne paused. "Maren thinks longer. He thinks Vorik will spend the first three months understanding what failed and why, and the next three building the next approach." "Which gives us six months," she said. "To do what?" Cain asked. He was at the secondary table, where he'd been for the past hour with Thorne's corre
