Lahat ng Kabanata ng Mated To My Captor: Kabanata 81 - Kabanata 90

The medical unit opens at first light.I know this because I've been sitting in the corridor outside it since before first light, on the bench along the wall across from the door, watching the strip of light under it go from dark to the specific yellow of fluorescent lighting being switched on. A nurse I don't recognize by name comes in from the far stairwell, registers my presence on the bench with mild surprise, and unlocks the door."You're early," she says."I know," I say. "I can wait."She holds the door open. "Come in. Dr. Harrison gets here shortly. I'll get you registered."I follow her in.The medical unit has the particular quality of all medical spaces, a cleanliness that exceeds hygiene and becomes its own kind of atmosphere, the smell of antiseptic and neutral surfaces, the specific quiet of a room designed for things that require privacy. I sit in the waiting area on a chair that is more comfortable than it looks

I'm two bites into a bowl of oatmeal when Sage sits down across from me.I look up. She has her jacket on and her bag over one shoulder and the expression of someone who made a decision between the archive and the cafeteria and is acting on it before she changes her mind."I'll eat with you," she says. "And then I need to show you and Dante something together.""The investigation?""There's a piece I didn't include in what I showed you on the riverside path." She takes the chair across from me and reaches for the bread basket in the center of the table with the ease of someone who has decided to be domestic about what is clearly not a domestic conversation. "I needed to think through how to present it first."I eat my oatmeal. She eats her bread. Around us the cafeteria moves through its morning rhythm, plates and conversation and the particular noise of a pack compound at a functional hour, and nobody in it has any idea what I'm curr

Sage takes us to the meditation chamber on the archive level.I didn't know it existed until she opens the door and the room presents itself, small and deliberately austere, no windows, walls lined with sound-dampening material, two low seats and a third positioned slightly apart. The kind of space designed for things that require complete containment."This is where the pack historian conducts formal memory witness sessions," Sage says, setting her bag down and pulling out her documentation materials with the methodical preparation of someone ensuring every procedural element is correct. "It's shielded. Whatever happens in here stays in here energetically. No external interference, no bleed into the compound's general population."I look at the room and I think about what I'm about to do and I keep my face where it is.Dante sits in one of the low seats without being directed to. He sits the way he's been sitting since he called Sage back i

We move back to my room without discussing it.It's not a decision exactly, more the natural continuation of a direction that started in the meditation chamber when Sage left and the professional distance became unavailable. We walk through the compound's corridors in the particular quiet of late evening, the kind of quiet that belongs to people who have been through something together and don't need to fill the space between them with conversation, and when we reach my door I open it and he follows me in and I don't think about whether it's advisable. My room is as I left it. The small lamp on the desk casting its low light, the window showing the compound's exterior in the dark, the bed that has held more than its share of difficult nights. Dante sits on the edge of it with the open quality he's been carrying since the meditation chamber, the management not yet fully reinstated, and I sit beside him and we're close enough that the warmth of him is immed

My heart is doing something irregular as I walk down the corridor from Kira's room. Not fear exactly. The physiological presentation of fear without the cognitive component, the elevated pulse and the specific alertness of someone whose body has registered that something irreversible is about to happen and is preparing accordingly. I let it run. Trying to regulate it would cost energy I need for what comes next.I find Sage in the archive corridor carrying a stack of documents and moving with her customary morning purpose."I need you to gather people," I say. "Lower ranked wolves. Third floor, second floor, the training cohort, the administrative staff. Anyone below senior pack level."Sage stops walking. She looks at me with the specific attention she reserves for moments when she's reading a situation rather than responding to it, and I watch her arrive at the correct conclusion in approximately four seconds."Kira told you,
