Chapter 1

Yale Johnson caught my gaze and marched right up to me, gripping my arm."Your brother's been out of sorts, and the doctors can't pin down what's wrong. He's withering away.""Come on, I heard Dr. Cunningham's the top dog in this field. Let's go see him, pronto."His eyes were desperate, his hands clammy.I flashed back to when I was burning up with a fever, asking him for oatmeal, and how he shoved my hand away like it was toxic."You think you can ask me for favors with those pathetic grades? I wish you'd just disappear. Then your mom and I could try for someone better."I brushed him off with the same detached indifference he once showed me. "Sir, you're making zero sense to me."Want medical attention? Get in line and register like everyone else. No skipping."He stood there, petrified, while the colleagues around him gaped.Yale was all about keeping up appearances. He sent me off to the countryside and told everyone I was sick and needed rest. After he took Josh Lewis i

I did not even make it to the med wing when I caught the sound of my colleague's voice, all twisted up with frustration."Look, mister, we're not trying to be difficult. However, this Dr. Shane Johnson you keep asking about, he's not on our roster."Yale's voice was getting all sharp and edgy."Quit covering for him! He's the one who took my blood yesterday, and all those nurses at the check-up center saw it!"I pushed the door open and stepped in, and Yale's eyes practically sparkled. "Ah, there you are!"My colleague was totally caught off guard. "Him? He's the new..."However, Yale cut him off quickly. "Exactly! I knew it, he's the newbie! Just look at my arm, it's a mess!"He yanked up his sleeve to show off the angry, swollen mess where he got the shot, all dotted with little bumps."It hurt like heck when he stuck me, and when I whispered a complaint, he just jammed the cotton ball into my wound on purpose! Got it all on camera!"Now I can't even bend my arm, and it's me

Chapter 3

Yale looked me up and down, his eyes wide, and then he could not help but laugh."Cut it out! I'm here to complain about him, not to praise him. Dr. Cunningham's the one who's supposed to be treating my son."He's an expert? With a brain like that?"I was right behind him, shaking my head slightly at Paul.Paul's brow creased in a mix of confusion and concern, but he was all about keeping the peace."I've got the picture. Tell you what, I'll go with you to get that skin treatment, and we'll cover all the costs. As for Dr. Cunningham, I'll handle it. Let's just apologize to each other and move on, okay?"He slapped the table hard, his eyes flashing with barely contained loathing."No way! If we let this guy off the hook today, who knows how many more patients he'll screw over later?"Yale had it out for me, like he was obsessed. Back when we were kids, he accused me of stealing a ring and did not hesitate to lay into me.Even after we found the ring in a drawer, he still gave m

"Internal medicine? That guy's from internal medicine, and he still won't help Josh? He's as irritating now as he was when he was a kid!""Only a month off? That's letting him off easy. They should strip him of his medical license!"My ID took an unexpected swim in a basin a few days back during an emergency, and the details had all but washed away. I did not get around to getting a new one yet.Yale, seeing Paul stay quiet, got bolder with his words."Come on, Dean Harris, cut to the chase. I want to see Dr. Cunningham, and I want to see him now."Paul massaged his forehead, looking weary."Dr. Cunningham just texted me. He's agreed to take on your son's case.""However, he's not here at the moment. You'll have to wait."Yale lost it. "Wait? How can we wait when it's a matter of life and death?!""Sitting on the spot and doing nothing, I should report you all for dereliction of duty!"Even my colleague could not keep quiet, his voice dripping with sarcasm."Why isn't he her

Chapter 5

He blinked slowly, twice, then charged and slapped me."What are you doing here, you suspended has-been!""Today's the day Dr. Cunningham treats Josh. Don't you dare mess it up!"The live stream was rolling, and Yale's outburst was broadcasted for all to see.I asked for low-key cameras to keep the ward calm, and he was none the wiser. The reporters, in the know, were shocked. "How can you speak to a doctor like that?"Yale scoffed."Doctor? Am I not allowed to discipline my own son?"Confused whispers spread. I pointed to the next room, stone-faced."Isn't that your son?"Or maybe you, Mr. Johnson, are too old to remember your own words?"Back in freshman year, after I bombed a test, Yale took in Josh, an orphan and class valedictorian, declaring he would adopt him.I lost my room, relegated to the couch. My meals went from well-rounded to just oatmeal and the occasional side dish.Yale did the bare minimum to keep me alive, like I was some pet he did not care about: just

Chapter 6

Yale's face froze, and he whipped around to look at me like he saw a ghost."Hold up! Hold up! What are you trying to say?"Dr. Cunningham? You? You're- What's with that title?"He looked lost, his eyes darting around the room, but everyone else just zipped their lips.I took a deep breath, brushed off his confusion, and headed straight for Josh. The bio-shot I brought in worked wonders; Josh's color was back, and he was talking like his old self.Propped up by my side, Josh faced Yale, who was still in shock. "Dad, I caught every word you guys were saying.""That mango juice wasn't Shane's doing. It was me."However, after you laid into him like that, I was way too chicken to fess up."Josh was always crazy about mangoes, but ever since he moved in with us, he did not have a single one.Driven by his craving, he sneaked a bottle of juice and stashed it in the fridge, never thinking I would stumble upon it.Yale was panting hard, his voice shaking with each breath."No way!

Chapter 7

It was my mom.Shirley Rogers finished signing and whirled around to deliver a stinging slap to Yale's face."That's enough! Do you have any idea how much flak my relatives and colleagues are giving us?"You're just getting more and more out of touch with age!"He froze, baffled. "What are you talking about?"The reporter gestured to the tiny camera pinned to his chest."I knew there was a reason Dr. Cunningham insisted on going live without our heavy-duty gear."Otherwise, we wouldn't have caught your true colors on camera!"The TV station hyped up this broadcast big time. Add Yale's weird antics to the mix, and boom: the viewer count exploded, topping the charts for the day."That kid did it to spite me! He's holding a grudge, making me look like a fool when I'm all shaken up!"Yale tried to storm into the OR, but Shirley grabbed him, holding him back."You're already the laughingstock of the town! Want to drag the rest of us down with you?"He was losing it, lashing out

Chapter 8

Josh was actually battling a rare immune rejection disease, a hormonal imbalance causing his own cells to turn against him.First, we had to tackle the disease with precision medicine, targeting the cells before we could start clearing away the damaged parts, bit by bit.I just cracked a case like that with my mentor while I was overseas. Thanks to our quick action, the patient pulled through. However, after that day, Yale never visited Josh again. Shirley chipped in for some of the hospital bills, and Josh insisted he could handle the rest.During a check-up, he caught my hand."Thank you for saving me, and not just in the physical sense."I saw the tears on Josh's face and felt a warmth in my own eyes.A month earlier, desperate for answers about his condition, he scoured the internet and had a friend reach out to me.When we met, I was ready to bolt. However, he caught me fast, his voice breaking as he said sorry."I'm sorry. I was too scared back then. Seeing you're doing

Chapter 9

When I saw Yale, he was a shadow of his former self: gaunt, pale, and the smugness in his eyes was gone, replaced by a wild, vacant stare. He tried to speak, but his voice came out as nothing but a rasp."You wrecked my life, snatched Josh away, and made Shirley cut me off for good. You think you've won, huh?""Change your name all you want, but you're still my flesh and blood! Kid, give him a lesson, a son's gotta take care of his folks, right?" The cop's face was a mix of emotions, but he ended up nodding anyway. Dad's eyes were wild, his finger jabbing the air inches from my face. "Look at you, hating me so much, but you're stuck with me till the end!""Think about it, I've provided for you for ten years less than I should have. Looks like I'm the real winner here!" I saw that meltdown coming a mile away. "Yeah, I know the drill, so I'll only cough up the bare minimum for you each month.""Not happy with the cash? Sue me, if you can cough up the lawyer fees.""This i
