Chapter 99He had decided, before she was born, that he would take the night duties on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He had made this decision in the private way he made personal decisions, working through the reasoning until it was complete and then acting on it rather than presenting it as a proposal. The reasoning had been practical and also something more than practical. It was practical because Elara was nursing, which made her the primary person required for most nighttime interruptions, and she needed the recovery that only unbroken sleep could provide, and the most useful thing he could do with the hours between midnight and five was to ensure that any interruption that did not require nursing was handled before it reached her. The reasoning was more than practical because he had understood, with increasing clarity as the due date approached, that taking the Tuesday and Thursday nights was not a concession or a favour. It was the most direct available expression of the thing he had

Chapter 101The first full Saturday alone came in the baby's fifth month when Elara had a site visit that could not be moved and that was going to take most of the morning and a portion of the afternoon. She had mentioned it two weeks in advance. He had said it was fine. She had mentioned it again the previous evening. He had said it was fine again, in the same tone, the tone of someone who meant it rather than the tone of someone managing a concern by repeating a reassurance. On the morning of the Saturday she came downstairs at seven-thirty and he was already up with the baby in the sitting room and the coffee was made and there was toast on the counter, slightly over-done in the specific way of his toast, which she had come to accept as a characteristic rather than a flaw.'Ms. Chen?' she said, from the doorway.'I told her the day was not needed,' he said, without looking up from the baby. She looked at him. He looked up.'We will be entirely fine,' he said. He said it with the fl

Chapter 103David came alone for a week in the baby's seventh month. Not David and Carol. Just David, which was unusual enough that when Elara spoke to him on the phone and he mentioned it she waited for the explanation and he gave it in the particular way he gave things he had thought about carefully, which was directly and without dressing it up.'I want to come and know him,' David said. 'Not through you. Not through Carol making everything warm. Just the two of us in the same house for long enough to find out who we are to each other.'Elara had been quiet for a moment. Then: 'He will be glad of that.''Do you think so?''Yes,' she said. 'He wants to be known by you. He has wanted that since he called you and told you the truth about the beginning. What you have now is the public version and the repaired version and the version that sits across from you at dinner while Carol and I make the atmosphere. He deserves the one you'll find if you just spend a week in the same house.''An

Chapter 105The offer arrived on a Tuesday in the baby's eighth month, directly to her professional email, addressed to Elara Wynn, from the director of a cultural institution in Vienna whose name she recognised and whose reputation she knew and whose judgment in matters of design she had respected from a significant professional distance for several years. She read the email twice before she opened the attached brief. Then she opened the brief and read it once, quickly, and then she closed her laptop and went to make tea and stood at the kitchen window looking at the courtyard fountain while the kettle heated and let what she had read settle into its proper shape without trying to manage her response to it.The project was three interconnected historic buildings in Vienna, each from a different century, combined over the past decade into a single cultural complex. The structural and architectural work was complete. What remained was the interior, the design of spaces that would honou

Chapter 107The change in Margot was not the change of a person who had become someone different. It was the change of a person who had finally become more completely who they had always been, the parts that had been managed into the background coming forward now that the management was no longer necessary. She had always loved. Elara had understood this from the beginning, even in the difficult early months when the love expressed itself as control, as the management of outcomes, as the engineering of structures designed to keep the things she loved safe in the only way she knew how to keep them. The love had always been there. What changed was how it was expressed, and what changed that was the baby. The baby had arrived and had made certain forms of management simply impossible. You could not manage a ten-month-old. You could not engineer the correct outcome of a baby crawling across the kitchen floor directly toward you with her arms raised in the clear language of I want to be wi
