Chapter Two hundred and fifty one

ELRIC'S POV The day of the funeral finally came,it had rained heavily the night before but it had stopped sometime before dawn but dark clouds still covered the sky. I stand in front of the chapel in a black suit that feels too tight around my shoulders. I've been standing there for what feels like hours, my hands clasped in front of me, my eyes fixed on the coffin by the altar. The chapel is old and grand with high arched ceilings and stained glass windows that cast colored light across the wooden pews. The air smells like old wood and flowers and the faint hint of candle wax. There are white Roses are everywhere. They were my mother's favorite and my father always carried one with him ever since she died he'll always say This way she's with me with that silly smile he rarely showed. So it felt right to have it around. I had them arranged in tall vases all around the coffin. The coffin was polished mahogany that gleamed under the soft glow of the chandeliers. It was simpl

Chapter Two hundred and fifty two

ELRIC’S POV “ELRIC!!!!!” someone screams my name. I spin around just as the cemetery explodes into chaos. People scatter in every direction, black suits and dresses blurring as they run for cover. A woman near the front of the crowd goes down hard, clutching her arm. Another man stumbles and falls behind a headstone. The priest drops his book and freezes, eyes wide. “Get down!” I shout, but my voice is lost under the next round of gunfire. Victor is already beside me, pulling his weapon from under his jacket. Damien is a few steps ahead, one arm wrapped around Leah’s waist, the other shoving Emily toward a black van. “Behind the van!” Damien yells. “Now!” He practically throws both women behind the vehicle as bullets chew into the dirt around their feet. Emily screams. Leah doesn’t make a sound but her face is white as she pulls Emily lower against the tire. Victor grabs my arm and drags me sideways. We dive behind a thick oak tree just as a burst of automatic fire rips thr

Chapter Two hundred and fifty three

ELRIC’S POV The rain came down harder, cold and steady turning the dirt around us into dark mud that clung to everything. Victor’s breathing had gone shallow. The jacket I pressed against his side was completely soaked through and my hands were sticky with his blood. Every time I moved no matter how small the wound made a wet sound that turned my stomach. Across the cemetery the calm voice spoke again; it was closer this time. “We’re coming, Deluca. You can’t hide forever.” I took another risk and looked over the stone wall. There were four men left, and they moved in carefully, coming closer, using the headstones and the older mausoleums for cover. Two circled toward the van where Damien,Leah and Emily were. The other two came at us. Victor saw them too. His eyes were half-closed but they were still sharp enough to know the threat we were in. “Shit, they’re closing in,” he rasped. “I know.” Damien fired at them from behind the van hitting one of the men in the chest an

Chapter Two hundred and fifty four

LEAH’S POV The rain kept falling like it was trying to erase everything that had just happened, but the blood on my hands and the stillness of my father’s body refused to disappear. I stayed on my knees in the mud, both palms pressed hard against his chest. His skin was still warm. That warmth felt like the only proof I had left that he hadn’t left me yet. The rain mixed with the blood, turning it thin and pink as it ran down my wrists and into the soaked fabric of my sleeves. “Get the car,” I said. My voice came out rough, almost unrecognizable. “We have to take him to the hospital. Right now.” No one moved. I lifted my head and looked at Damien, then at Elric. Both of them were staring down at my father with the kind of quiet that already felt like acceptance. I hated it. “Why are you just standing there?” I shouted, the words tearing out of me. “Get the fucking car! He’s still warm. They can help him. They *have* to help him.” Damien stepped closer, rain dripping from his ha

Everyone who crossed me will pay the price just like them. There's a knock on the door “Come in” I say the door opens and I hear someone walk in, I don't bother opening my eyes to see who it is. Chapter Two hundred and fifty nine

ELRIC'S POVI drove to my father's estate and everywhere was quiet. I had told the servants to take a day off. I needed to be alone.I walked in, closed the door behind me, the sound echoing off the walls, and headed for my father's study.Everything was exactly as he left it. The half-empty glass of whiskey sat on the table, the ashtray overflowing with cigarette butts.I walked around his desk, running my hand across the back of the chair where the leather had worn smooth from years of him sitting in it.I could almost see him sitting there, saying, "You're late, boy. I was starting to think you weren't coming."But he wasn't here and I would never get to see him again.I walked through the rooms, touching things he touched. The worn leather of the couch. The cold metal of the lamp. The rough wood of the table where we used to argue about everything and nothing.I stopped in front of the mirror in the hallway. The man staring back at me looked like a stranger, with unkempt hair and

Chapter Two hundred and sixty

DAMIEN'S POV “Let's go” Leah calls out already by the door. It's been almost a week since she made that ridiculous request but I have no choice but to fulfill her wish. “Coming” I say, dragging my feet. I've been giving her excuses since then and I've run out of more to give so I have no choice.“You seem too excited for someone putting themselves in danger” She rolls her eyes. "I'm not excited. I just want to get this done. There's a difference." "Is there?" She grabs her jacket and pulls it on. "You've been stalling for a week, Damien. I've been patient. I've waited. Now I'm done waiting, are we going or should I figure it out myself?" I sigh and grab my keys. "Fine. Let's go." The drive to the gun shop is quiet. She stares out the window, her fingers tapping on her knee. I could feel how nervous she was. "You don't have to do this, you know," I say. "Yes, I do." "You could let me protect you." "And what if you're not there?" She turns to look at me. "What if something h
