Lahat ng Kabanata ng He Came Back Running : Kabanata 211 - Kabanata 220

Alex's POV I was awake at four-thirty.... Not from insomnia, I had spoken to the resort staff the previous evening, while Maya was in the shower, and the confirmation had come back at ten: everything would be ready at first light. I dressed quietly. Maya on her side. Breathing at the steady, settled pace of genuine sleep. I wrote a note. Back in five minutes. Don't open your eyes... Then I went downstairs. The basket was at the field beyond the cottage lane.... Twenty minutes of preparation I had missed while Maya was asleep, the balloon laid out on the grass, the burners warming, the envelope beginning its slow, magnificent rise in the cold before dawn. I stood beside the basket and watched it rise and thought about two months of listening to a voice I couldn't answer. She had described so many things across those weeks The restaurant. The investigation. The fears she had at three in the morning when she thought no one was hearing. She had described, once, s

Alex's POVThe flowers had gone to Reeves. Not the physical arrangement.... I had photographed them first, and Marcus had driven the four hours to collect them for forensic processing in the morning. The resort had confirmed, when I showed them the photograph, that no one from their staff had placed anything on the cottage step.Which meant whoever had placed them had arrived independently.Which meant the cottage location had been known to someone outside the people we had toldWhich meant four days away was not, in the complete sense we had intended, away.I had told Maya what we knew and what we didn't know and what Reeves was doing about it, and Maya had received it with the composed efficiency of someone who had been receiving this kind of information for months and had a methodology for it."Not tonight," she had said."No," I had agreed."Tomorrow we can think about what it means and what to do about it," she had said. "Tonight is still ours."I had looked

Alex's POVI had arranged it three days ago.... The morning after we arrived, while Maya was in the shower and I had twenty minutes....The resort manager had been... once she understood what I was asking, entirely willing. This happens more than you might think, she had said. People come here to find things again.I had thanked herShe had made the calls.I had not told Maya. Not because I thought she would object.... she would not object. But because some things were better received without the anticipation of them, without the opportunity to manage the feeling in advance. What I was arranging deserved to arrive as the thing itself, without the preparatory versions of it that existed in the hours of knowing it was coming. She slept later than I did.She had been sleeping better since the sandcastle..... I went downstairs.Made coffeeThought about the garden.... About the white dress and the vows we had written and the hi at the end of the aisle that had been the

Maya's POV We had read the full letter in the lighthouse... Both of us, sitting on the floor with the box open between us, the letter in my hands, Alex reading alongside me at the pace the letter required.... which was not a fast pace, which was the careful pace of every sentence that carried the weight of nine years of waiting to be received. My father had named names. He had named the structure He had explained, in the careful, sequential logic of a man who had understood that the person reading this might not have all the pieces yet, how the falsified valuations connected to the phantom accounts, and how the phantom accounts connected to the individuals, and how the individuals connected to each other through a corporate architecture that had been built to be invisible and that he had spent eight months making visible. He had named the principal... The name was one I already knew.... one the investigation had been building toward, one that Reeves and Carter

Maya's POVThe rose petals were the first thing.A pathway of them, red against the pale floor of the private terminal.... not scattered carelessly but arranged with the deliberate attention of someone who had decided the detail mattered and had spent time on the detail. The pathway led from the bottom of the stairs to a white limousine waiting at the terminal's edge.On either side of them pathway, staff.Smiling. I looked at Alex.He offered his arm."You planned all of this," I saidNot a question."I told you the vacation wasn't over," he said.I looked at the petals. At the car....I took his arm.The limousine moved through the city.....I pressed my face to the window. The city happening around us. The bridges, the buildings, the dense beauty of a place that had been building itself for centuries and had developed, through the accumulation of all that building, a particular gravity. The tower appeared between two buildings.I said nothing.....Just lookedAlex
