LEA’S POV My body was pressed against the floor, and I could feel every inch of the cold stone against my skin. My ribs ached more than they ever had, in a way that made it throb with every breath I took. My stomach was burning from pain in the places that Mirabeth had kicked me relentlessly. My hands quivered slightly from where they rested on the floor as I tried to keep myself upright.I coughed violently, lifting my head, and my eyes fell on Amreth. He was still standing by the door, his presence making the air around us feel suffocating in a way that made it hard to breathe. I couldn’t read the expression on his face, and his eyes were fixed on me with an intensity that made my stomach churn. There was no anger or sadness in his eyes, just a look that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.And that scared me more than anything, because I didn’t know what he was thinking or what he wanted. Nothing was making sense to me. Why had he called me to his chambers and held me in such an int

AMRETH’S POV The sound of wood splitting echoes through the training grounds, followed by the sound of a dummy hitting the ground with a low thud. My breathing was steady, betraying the tension that was brewing underneath my skin. Sweat pooled on my skin, dampening my clothes and making it stick to me.The sweat slid down my spine in a slow trail that irritated me. I held my sword, tightening my grip around the hilt. I pushed forward, the blade slicing through the air before it landed on the wooden dummy with a force that would cut a wolf in half.I struck the dummy again and again. Each strike was calculated, honed through years of practice and discipline, but something felt off. My usual rhythm was odd, and my strikes felt sharper and more forceful than usual. Instead, I could feel something else beneath my strikes.I was restless and it felt so wrong.I took a step back, rolling my shoulder as I exhaled slowly, in an attempt to calm myself down. The scent of dust mixed with sweat

LEA’S POV A slow smile curled up her lips as she began to walk up the stairs, her footsteps echoing in the quiet space between us. My stomach stopped the moment she was standing right in front of me.“You’re so persistent. You really won’t give, will you?” she scoffed, the amusement in her tone evident. “You keep trying to seduce what doesn’t belong to you.My eyes grew wide. “But I’m not trying to do anything. I just...” My words died down in my throat under the weight of her cold gaze. She tilted her head, her eyes scanning my entire being. “You think I didn’t see you? I did. I saw everything,” she continued. “I saw the way you were clinging to him, and the way he held you.”My chest grew hot as she spoke.“But I didn’t–““Oh, please,” she cut in sharply. “Just save it.”There was a moment of brief silence before she glanced over her shoulder, down the stairs, before turning back to me. A wide, eerie smile spread across her face, and something slowly shifted in her expression. In a

LEA’S POV I couldn’t remember when the whips stopped. At some point, the sound of the whips drowned into a distant echo, and it blended with the ringing in my ears. It stretched out so long that the pain on my back blurred into something numb. My body no longer reacted the way it was supposed to. The first few whips had made screams tear from my throat, but now I couldn’t scream again.Because I couldn’t feel anything anymore. The restraints on my hand were finally loosened, and they went limp, falling to my sides heavily as if they didn’t belong to my body. My knees gave out on me, and I fell forward on the dirt, my palm scraping against the floor as I tried my best to stay upright.Voices echoed around me, everything blending in a way that made it hard for me to understand what they were saying. I was aware that everyone was still looking at me. I could feel their sharp gazes boring a hole in every inch of my skin. But none of that mattered.Because the only thing I could think abo

LEA’S POV Rowan’s arms were still wrapped around me, and his warmth filled my core. I didn’t even have time to savour it when the door burst open with so much force that it made me flinch instinctively. The sound was so loud, it cut through the comfortable silence that had settled around us.My heart skipped painfully when I spun my head to the door.Amreth was standing there, and in that moment, my breathing ceased. His presence was enough to bring anyone to their knees. It was suffocating, like a dark storm that made its way into the room. His eyes landed on me almost immediately, and I could see his eyes trailing over the way Rowan held me. Something about the way his orbs darkened made my stomach drop.I knew it wasn’t anger, but it was something darker, something that made my body tense up.Rowan shifted slightly, his hands tightening around me like he was being protective. He faced Amreth, a scowl on his face.“What are you doing in my room? You shouldn’t be here,” he said in a
