Gesare The first pain steals my breath and i freeze in the middle of the nursery, one tiny blue onesie clutched in my hands as a sharp cramp slices across my lower stomach."No" I squeeze my eyes shut, willing it away, the doctor said I still had a little time atleast three more weeks.Another contraction crashes through me before I can even finish the thought and this one is stronger. It wraps around my back and tightens around my belly until I can't breathe. The tiny onesie slips from my fingers and lands on the floor.I grab the edge of the crib, my knuckles turning white as I fight to stay standing."Easy" I whisper to myself. "Just breathe Gesare."I immediately start breathing in and out slowly as I learned in my birthing class but the pain doesn't care about breathing, it keeps coming. It's sharp and relentless. A warm trickle suddenly runs down my legs and I immediately look down. For one terrifying second my heart stops, my water just broke, this baby was coming an it was co

Kumba I never knew a room could be this quiet, not after everything we had been through.Hours ago, it had been filled with alarms, hurried footsteps, desperate voices, and prayers whispered under my breath. I had never been more terrified in my life. Now the only sound was the soft, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor and the tiny little sigh coming from the bundle sleeping peacefully in my arms.My daughter, I still couldn't believe it.I looked down at her again, and my chest tightened in a way I couldn't explain. She was so impossibly small.A tiny pink hat covered the wisps of dark hair on her head, and her little face was scrunched up as she slept against my chest. One of her hands had escaped the blanket, her fingers no bigger than the tip of my thumb.I carefully offered her my finger.Without opening her eyes, she wrapped her tiny fist around it and my heart stopped."Oh"A laugh escaped me before I could stop it."So you are already stronger than me huh."She squeezed me a

DianeHospitals have a strange kind of silence, it's not the absence of noise, it's the absence of certainty.Every hallway carries someone's joy and someone else's grief.Today, it had given me both.I smiled to myself as I stepped out of Gesare's room, gently pulling the door shut behind me.I could still picture her curled protectively around little Lola.Kumba sitting beside the bed, unable to stop staring at the baby every few seconds. It was the family he had spent years convincing himself he never wanted.Yet now, I doubted he would trade them for the world and neither would I.I never imagined I would become a grandmother not after everything. The thought made my chest ache.Everything had almost been taken from us today.I had watched my son unravel outside that operating room. I had seen a side of him that very few people ever would, powerless and terrified. He had looked at the doctor and chosen his wife without hesitation. Not because he didn't love his daughter. But becau

DianeThere are days you never forget, days that divide your life into two parts, the before and after. For me, It was a cold Tuesday morning ten years ago, the morning everything changed for my family. The morning I unknowingly lost the version of my son I had raised. The morning a secret was born."Kumba!" My voice echoed through the house but their was no answer.I sighed, setting my coffee cup on the kitchen island before climbing the stairs."Kumba, you are going to be late for school."But their was still nothing. I pushed his bedroom door open and there he was standing by the window, already dressed in his school uniform, his backpack hanging from one shoulder. He didn't even look at me."You're finally awake," he muttered.I frowned, "What is that supposed to mean?""It means exactly what it sounds like."I crossed my arms."I don't have the patience for this attitude today.""Funny."He let out a bitter laugh."You never seem to have patience for me."My heart sank, "Kumba

KumbaI stood outside Gesare's hospital room long after Dr. Valentina walked away.My hand rested on the cold metal doorknob, but I couldn't bring myself to open it. Her words still echoed inside my head.*"Kumba, the biopsy results are back."*My heart had stopped the moment she had said those words, she hadn't needed to say anything else.I knew exactly which biopsy she meant. The one she had taken a few weeks ago after finding the small lump during one of my routine follow up appointments.A lump I had convinced myself was nothing but just a scar, anything but cancer. "What did you find?" I had asked, barely recognizing my own voice.Dr. Valentina had looked down at the report in her hands before meeting my eyes."The biopsy showed abnormal cells Kumba."The hallway had suddenly become too small and quiet."What does that mean?""It means we can't ignore it anymore."I swallowed hard."Is the cancer back? Just tell me""I don't know."Those three words had somehow frightened me mor
