Electricity

Emma“Wow, you really are hungry.”The words just sort of soak into my mind but don’t register any meaning. I’m still staring ahead at the crowd of people who had filled in the space where the blond had walked away just moments ago. Damn, I didn’t even get his name. Did I? I can’t even remember. “Emma?” Something finally clicks in my head, and I realize Kara’s talking to me.“Oh, sorry. Did you say something?” I ask, finally turning to look at her.“I said that I guess you really are hungry,” she say, pointing to the ridiculously supersized snacks in my hands. “I’ve never seen you eat quite that much popcorn. Wait. You’re not pregnant, are you?”My eyes go wide. “What?” Then they retreat into a squint with my brows pushed together. “No!” I say firmly, but I’m still a little dazed. What’s wrong with me?“Whew,” she says. “I mean, it would be okay if you were. I could be the aunt. Or the godmother, something like that. It would be kind of cute. Maybe you could name her after me….”“Ka

The Light of a Luna

DevonMy reaction is instant. Someone Emma cares about needs help, and I’m going to help her. I’m not even sure why. When we walk into the smoothie shop, the woman I assume is Emma’s mom looks like a mess. There’s a line of customers that another woman is dealing with and a couple of guys who look like customers trying to stem the flow of liquid squirting out of some sort of machinery.Machines are my thing, so I go straight over and get a handle on the problem while Emma heads over to talk to her mom. It takes a moment to orient myself to the machinery, but the problem isn’t catastrophic, so I’m able to rig it to stop for now until they can get some new parts. Someone hands me a towel, and I try to wipe the mess of sticky syrup-like stuff off me so I can stop smelling like a raspberry popcicle. I sit down, marveling at how Emma has just dived in to get through the line of customers then start cleaning up. After things calm down, she walks over.“Thank you,” she say in a whisper. “Y

Alone in the Crowd

EmmaFinally, Mom convinced me that she and Brianna have everything under control and can handle things through closing time, so I head out for a stroll back to the fairgrounds. I hope Devon had made it back, and that I can find him again in the crowd. Something tells me that won’t be too difficult a task. There’s just something about him that’s impossible to miss in a crowd. Once again, the sounds of the festival grow louder as I approach. But I’m still back a bit where there’s less light pollution, and the sky sparkles with mesmerizing starlight. I slow down and just sort of enjoy it for a moment. The moon is bright even though only a sliver of it is visible, looking like a smile shining brightly at the twinkling stars. I have always felt like I have a connection to the moon, as though it’s more than just an orb circling our planet and reflecting sunlight.Strange, I know. I’m not sure how she found me so quickly, but Kara runs up the minute I step onto the well-trampled fairgro

Danger Among Us

DevonIt’s three days later, and it’s still hard to keep my mind focused. I feel like a failure. My dad always had his mind on the pack. Sure, he and Mom had their days off where they could have some fun, but that was only after he made sure everything was running smoothly.I don’t think anything will ever run smoothly for what’s left of the Emerald Moon pack, but I’m sure going to try. “Hey,” Mandy says. I hadn’t even heard her walk in… not good for an Alpha. “Hey,” I answer, my eyes not leaving the computer screen. “Find anything yet?” she asks. I shake my head. “It’s weird,” I say. “It’s like I can picture something in my head that would work, but figuring it out and bringing it to life just doesn’t seem to be doable.”She pulls up a chair, lifting it up off the ground lightly instead of dragging it, so the movement is almost undetectable. “Maybe you need to bounce it off someone,” she suggests. “You’ve been trying this on your own for so long. Maybe another perspective is wh

Scent in the Forest

EmmaIt;s the first day in a long time that I wake up to the sun blaring in through my curtains instead of hitting my alarm when it’s still dark out. I have the day off. Mom had looked at me funny the day before, as if realizing that something is wrong with me. I honestly don’t know how she does it. They say there’s a mother’s instinct, some magic telepathic ability that connects a child to their mother, no matter how old they are, and lets them know when there’s something wrong. Except, I’m adopted. Whatever it is, Mom seems to know that I need some time to myself, and she insisted that I take the day to relax. So, here I am, in the middle of the week, sleeping in late.I roll over and throw the blanket over my face, blocking out the light. But it doesn’t help as the thoughts still flow through my head, the same thoughts I’d had when I was trying to sleep late last night. I’d tossed and turned most of the night, and all I could think about was him.Devon. It;s like I’m obsessed

The Wolf Shifters

Emma“Wolves?!” I ask. Well, it’s not really asking–it’s more like a holler with a weird sort of squeak. I don’t exactly have a coherent voice at the moment. There I am, standing there with Devon staring at me and two wolves–WOLVES!–right next to him as if it’s the most natural thing in the world. Wolves who had just been people a few seconds before. I honestly don’t think my heart is beating. Instead, it’s like a rock is just sitting in my chest, growing heavier with each second that I stare at him–at them.My hands are shaking, and a chill is creeping up my entire body, starting at my feet and rising into my legs, my back, and up my spine. I shake my head, feeling like I’m losing control. This can’t be reality. I have to be crazy. It has to be a hallucination of some sort, or a dream–a bad nightmare. That’s it. I must be safe in my bed, having a weird nightmare about weird things in my head. I must have been thinking of Devon and wolves, and my mind put them together in my dre

The Imperial Council

DevonEmma took the news better than I thought she would, and honestly, I hadn’t expected to have to tell her at all for quite some time. The Moon Goddess had other plans, apparently. We sit for a long time in the forest, and it’s one of the best moments of my life. I feel complete, whole, and even though the Emerald Moon pack isn’t back where it should be, in its own territory, with a compound full of shifters living peaceful lives with their families, I still feel like I’m… home. But an Alpha and a human….Can we even be together? I have a pack to run, and Emma will never understand what that means, no matter how caring and wonderful she is. A human just can’t be a Luna who helps me lead the pack. Can she?A million questions swirl in my head about how all this could work, whether it could work at all, and what would happen to me if it doesn’t… or if it does. This feeling–it’s something I can’t even describe. I just know that Emma belongs in my arms, and I never want anything to

The Pack House

EmmaI’ll never look at a house the same way again. I always thought of the houses in this town as being pretty nice. Most have a rustic, log cabin type look since we’re in the middle of a pine forest. You could say that the town sort of blends into its surrounding. I’ve always thought it was nice, and I always assumed that what was going on in all these houses in my small town was about the same as in my house–sleeping, getting ready for work, living normal lives. I’m never assuming anything, ever again. Devon’s ‘pack house,’ as he calls it, is nothing short of a community in itself. I guess I’ve never been down this street before because I never realized there was a huge place like this bordering the forest. We step into the backyard after walking out of the forest. The place is gorgeous, with a nice brick patio with two huge built-in barbeque pits and an open fire pit, surrounded by wooden benches that looked like they were cut from downed forest wood. The whole vibe is rustic

The Mate Bond

EmmaMate pull….“There are a few things I should explain,” Devon says. His voice is different, softer, and I look at him for a moment, admiring the way the delicate flakes of silver glisten in his bright green eyes. I’d never noticed the silver before I’d seen him in his wolf form. He smiles, and I realized my gaze has lingered a bit too long. A flush of heat creeps up my cheeks.“Mate pull,” I say out loud, repeating the phrase he’d said before.“You feel it, too,” he says. It’s a statement that seems like a question, so I nod. I’ve never heard the phrase before, but somewhere deep inside, I feel its meaning. He smiles again and takes my hand, joining me on the overstuffed sofa. His body radiates warmth, and that impossible mix of pine needles, coconut, and strawberry scents make me draw closer to him. Our thighs touch, and my eyes move down to his muscular legs until I sense his arm wrap around me, and then I raise my head. Our eyes met then, and I don’t even remember how our

Return of the Enemy

DevonI hold her in my arms, her soft skin and the incredible scent of pine and wildflowers making my heart race, even though I’m exhausted–for now.I close my eyes and am just about to drift off into a heavenly sleep when Mandy’s voice invades my mind.“Am I bothering you?” my Beta asks in the pack mind-link.I answer with the closest thing I can give to a grunt in her head.“I take that as a yes,” she says. “But Kelly thinks she’s found something you need to see.”I groan out loud this time, and it seems to snap Emma up from her own dream world.“Are you okay?” she asks. I caress her cheek with my fingers and kiss her on the head, which is the part of her that’s closest to me at the moment. “I’m fine,” I assure her. “But I’ve got some pack business I have to deal with.”“What time is it?” she asks, sitting up on the sofa and looking around. Maybe she wants her clothes, or she’s looking for a clock. Whatever she’s doing, her messy red hair and beautiful naked body, soft as silk, is
