I pressed my lips together, my inner wolf bristling as the air in the corridor thickened with Cameron’s darkening aura. Candace Moore immediately choked back her next insult, sensing the shift in the Alpha’s temper.Just then, the runic light above the surgery doors flickered to a steady green. The healer in charge stepped out, and I was the first to close the distance. "What is her status?" I demanded."The fading of her heart-fire is accelerating," the healer replied, his voice weary. "We must initiate the deep-tissue restoration immediately if we are to save her."I watched as Naomi Brooks was wheeled out on a hovering gurney. She looked fragile, her breathing hitched and supported by a silver oxygen-mask. My eyes burned with unshed tears. Three years ago, when I was a nameless omega with no pack to call my own, Naomi was the only one who offered me a warm hearth and a kind word. She was moved to a high-security private sanctum, the Steele family trailing behind like a funereal pro

Standing by the hospital's reinforced glass, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of Naomi Brooks’ chest beneath the medical runes, I felt the crushing weight of the secret I had just shared. I had used my pregnancy as a shield to save her, but now I had to face the storm: Cameron Steele."What if he demands I terminate the lineage?" the thought clawed at my mind. The Steele bloodline was obsessed with purity; an "untested" pup was a liability to their corporate and pack standing. The low, predatory rumble of a high-end engine broke my spiraling thoughts. A sleek, midnight-black transport pulled to the curb, the Steele Industries crest shimmering on the door.Cameron sat in the back, his features carved from shadows and cold ambition. Even through the tinted glass, his gaze felt like a physical weight on my skin."Enter," he commanded. His voice carried the absolute authority of a High Alpha. Despite the rebellion screaming in my veins, I knew making a scene in the Northlands' most pub

I watched his silhouette stretch across the cobblestones under the pale amber of the moon-lamps. With a bit of lingering mischief, I purposely stepped on the shadow of his head.Cameron caught the movement in his peripheral vision and huffed. "Sierra, are you truly resorting to pup-games?""I have no idea what you're talking about. I’m just walking," I chirped, trying to sound innocent."Don't assume my senses are as dull as a human's," he replied, his voice dropping into that familiar glacial tone."You’ve been tracking my every move, haven't you? How flattering, Alpha," I shot back, my tone thick with sarcasm. He averted his gaze, his jaw tightening. "You’re getting remarkably bold, aren't you?""If I hadn't been bold before, I never would have ended up in your bed," I countered. The words left my mouth before my brain could intercept them. I went hot all over and clamped my jaw shut. I didn't dare look at him. Spotting the stone pillars of the Steele Residence ahead, I hurried my p

It was Taylor Hale, a girl whose scent always carried the sharp, sour tang of unearned status."Some of us have been bleeding and toiling in the combat-design pits for three years, yet we still can't scent your trail. Our Pack Mentor, Naomi Brooks, hasn't stopped howling your praises in the link since she heard about your Fleur trophy," Taylor sneered, her voice dripping with enough venom to kill a pup.An awkward, heavy silence fell over the long wooden table of the Pacific Street Cafe.I set my water down, meeting her gaze with the calm stare of a Vaughn. "Taylor, my departure was a matter of blood-debts and pack flickers. My family’s hearth went cold for a time." I leaned in slightly. "If I hadn't seized that trophy, I wouldn't have the standing to breathe the same air as this Academy again. I’ve always respected your... persistence."Gina let out a low growl of support, whispering to me, "Ignore her, Sierra. Her wolf is just starving for the spotlight you took." I didn't let it ri

I met his eyes, a thick tome of ancestral law still heavy in my hand. "Well, you know what they say—the early wolf catches the scent."Cameron’s professional mask fractured, a flash of something dark and private crossing his features. "That is none of your concern," he snapped, the ice in his voice returning.I didn't push. I knew the boundaries of the Steele pride. I turned and walked away, my stride firm on the polished stone floor. As long as Lexi’s brother was the one to weave the healing runes for Naomi Brooks, I wouldn't let Cameron's jagged moods unsettle my focus.Left alone on the velvet sofa, Cameron scrolled through his device. A message from Jonah Price blinked on the screen: [Still tracking a healer with the required blood-purity and skill. The options are thinning.]He let out a long, weary exhale, massaging the bridge of his nose as the weight of the Northlands' industry pressed down on him.The next morning at the Academy, the air felt different. I sensed the heavy wei

The air in the Steele Residence grew suffocatingly thick, heavy with the scent of ozone and unspoken threats.I stared at Cameron, finding his silhouette suddenly foreign, as if the man I had known for three years had been replaced by a stranger with a jagged soul. With a dark, mirthless chuckle, Cameron bared his teeth. "No losses, you say? Is your desperate scramble for another male's protection fueling this pathetic attempt at logic?""It is the only path that honors the pack and saves Naomi," I countered, my voice steady despite the tremor in my spirit."That is merely your omega-level delusion," Cameron shot back. The heavy oak chair groaned as he stood, his massive frame looming over me. I didn't flinch. "And what is your truth then?" I pressed. He rooted himself to the spot, his back to me like a stone wall. "That," he rumbled, his voice cracking with a rare flicker of doubt, "is none of your concern."I took a step forward, the floorboards creaking under my weight. "You’ve bee

The wolf’s hunger in my belly—that strange, constant pull of the new life I carried—finally settled as I finished the morning’s kill-broth. The faint tremor of low energy left my limbs, replaced by a cold, sharp lucidity. We walked out of the medical ward in silence. The moment we slid into the obsidian interior of the transport, Cameron slid a piece of heavy parchment across the leather. "Mark it," he commanded.I didn't need to read the runes to know what it was. "I have told you before, Alpha. I want no part of the Steele hoards. No villas, no territories, no silver."I truly had no hunger for his empire.Cameron’s brow twitched with a jagged irritation. "I am not in the mood for the 'noble martyr' act, Sierra. Sign the scroll.""I am not acting, Cameron. I mean every word," I said, meeting his amber eyes with the calm, unwavering gaze of a Vaughn. "You’ve made it clear you felt caged by our union. Perhaps my young heart was foolish to think we were fated."I leaned back, my voice

The upscale furnishing hall of the Northlands was a labyrinth of silken rugs and carved weirwood, filled with the soft, melodic hum of a hidden bard’s lute. Usually, the atmosphere would be soothing, but the biting chill of the ventilation—designed to keep high-heat Alphas comfortable—was a jagged blade against my skin. I was already battling a rising fever, and the cold made my bones ache."Sierra, don't lag behind. We have a territory to settle," Candace Moore called out, her voice sharp with impatience as she strode ahead.I swallowed the metallic taste of sickness and forced my legs to move faster. As we neared the most renowned bedding atelier in the district, a towering silhouette caught my eye. My heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, I refused to believe my own senses. Why would Cameron Steele be here?Lexi Hart glided toward him, a triumphant lilt in her voice. "Cameron? I didn't realize you were overseeing the acquisitions personally today."Cameron stood there in a charco

"Alpha Steele, should we depart?" Jonah Price inquired, his voice a low rumble of caution."Why wouldn't we? Do you assume I have endless moons to waste?" Cameron snapped, casting a pointed, amber glare at his informant. "Find a caregiver for her. I’d find it difficult to explain to Naomi if the girl met an unfortunate end while under the Steele Pack's protection."Jonah nodded. He knew the Alpha’s way; Cameron often spoke in riddles when his wolf was restless. As they approached the arched stone entrance of the Public Ward, Lexi Hart and Candace Moore spilled out of a taxi-sled. Lexi rushed forward, her scent thick with forced concern. "Cameron! How is the... relic?""She is stable," Cameron responded tersely, his stride never breaking as he moved toward his transport.A faint, predatory smile played on Lexi’s lips. It seemed Sierra’s little fainting act hadn't won her any ground in the Steele den.Just as Lexi considered retreating to her own territory, a flash of white caught her e

Just as the request left my lips, the curtain pulled back. Aaron walked in, balancing a wooden meal crate. "Sierra, your scent was flagging. I brought some iron-rich broth and forest greens."I blinked, looking between my brother and the woman beside me. "Aaron, didn't you send Ursula to fetch me a meal?"A mask of pure confusion settled on Aaron’s face. "I never commissioned a caregiver for you, Sierra. The Vaughn Circle looks after its own."I turned to the woman. "Is there a mistake? Are you certain you have the right patient?"Ursula checked her runic tablet. "No error. Patient Sierra, Bed 3. The contract is ironclad.""Then who called you?" I pressed, my heart beginning to hammer against my ribs."The order came from the Steele Industries main office. The name on the silver was Barrett."Cameron.My breath hitched. Why would the Alpha of the Northlands, the man who couldn't wait to sever our bond, pay for my private care? A storm of conflicting emotions swirled in my chest. Was t
