Nicole's POVI stood by the glass cabinets, checking the supply levels, when two of my lab assistants walked into the storage alcove next to me. They did not see me behind the frosted glass partition."She is definitely still in the guest villa," the first assistant whispered, her voice low and tight. "The lunch delivery driver just came from the main gate. He said her personal driver is still sitting in the black sedan with the engine running, just waiting.""I heard she refused to sign the exit papers Tate's legal team brought her last night," the second assistant whispered back, the sound of plastic bins clinking as she moved them. "She told them she wasn't going anywhere until the elders stepped in.""Shh, lower your voice. Dr. Carter is down the hall.""Right, let's grab these vials and get out of here before she catches us," the first one muttered.Their footsteps hurried away, the heavy door of the alcove clicking shut behind them. I finally stepped out from behind the frosted

Nicole pov "The elders care about the rules," Amber interjected, her voice steady. "And the rules say she can't use facility overrides to bring unauthorized people inside. When they see the data in the folder, they won't protect her anymore."I looked down at my coffee and let that land for a second. "Thank you," I said. "For staying.""I'll stay tonight too if you want," she said. "I've slept on worse than that anteroom sofa." She said it the way she offered everything, plain, practical, no weight attached.I looked at her, then at Marlon, who was eating the lemon pastry and conspicuously not weighing in."Yes," I said. "Thank you."She nodded and pulled out the folder she'd brought. I pulled it toward me and started reading. We worked until half past midnight. When I finally sat back and closed the last file, the building had gone quiet around us, just the hum of equipment from the next lab and the soft sound of the security rotation changing outside."Go to sleep," Marlon said, st

Nicole's POVIt was Thursday evening, two days before the alliance ruling. I was sitting on the floor of the twins' room, helping Maple sort a collection of interesting stones he had been accumulating since."Look at this one, Mama," Maple said, holding up a grey pebble. "It has two faces. One is smooth like ice, and one is scratchy like a cat tongue.""It really does," I said, turning it over in my fingers. "Where did you find it?""By the big water pipe," he said, taking it back. "And this one is my favorite because it fits right inside my hand. See? It hides when I close my fingers." He squeezed his fist shut, then opened it with a wide smile. "And this blue one is from Rosy.""Rosy gave you this?" I asked, looking over at her."Yes," Rosy said from her bed a few feet away. She was holding an animal book Amber had brought her last month, turning the pages with careful attention. "I found it by the flowers where the big books are. It looked lonely.""Stones don't get lonely, Rosy,"

Nicole pov "I know, but it must be hard," I whispered, looking up into his dark eyes. "To sit on the edge of their beds, to hear them call you 'the tall man,' and to have to keep that distance.""It's enough that I am allowed in the room," Tate said, his deep voice softening, though his jaw remained set. "The pack blood in them already knows me, even if their minds don't have the word for 'father' yet. If I push them for an identity they aren't ready for while Sophia is actively circling this building, it creates confusion. Confusion makes them vulnerable. I want them secure first. We can deal with the rest after the ruling.""I promise you we will," I said, a wave of profound relief washing over me. "Once this case is fully closed and Sophia is gone for good, I am going to formally introduce you to them. They already love having you around."A tiny, faint trace of a smile touched the corner of Tate's mouth before his face went entirely serious again. "Maple asked me if I could show

Third person povSophia had been planning the exit for days. Not the clumsy version—the one that had failed at the east gate with the hired contacts and the maintenance credentials, all of it intercepted. Reyes had stripped her of her official badges and locked her inside a ground-floor suite in the residential block, waiting for the alliance board to meet. But Reyes didn't know about the physical keycard tucked into the lining of her winter coat. It wasn't registered to her name. Weeks ago, she had lifted it from a maintenance worker's jacket while it hung outside the utility corridor. Because it was a manual override card used for pipe cleanouts, it bypassed the digital logs.At two fifteen, she swiped the card against her own room door from the inside. The lock clicked open. She slipped out into the secondary utility corridor, entirely invisible to the guards watching the main entrance. She wasn't trying to run past the outer gates yet. She needed leverage first.Sophia walked o
