(Celeste’s POV) The vice principal, a woman who had entered with Joyce Romano’s group, stepped forward before Mr. Sayer could respond. “I believe we can be flexible in this situation,” she said. “The entrance examination is scheduled for the day after tomorrow. If the student meets our required standard and places within the top fifteen percent, I see no reason we cannot consider an exception.” Mr. Sayer looked between her, Joyce, Luca, and finally me. “Top fifteen percent,” he repeated. “If the score is there, we’ll make it work.” Luca lifted his head calmly. “I’ll be there.” The meeting ended shortly afterward.
