BiancaMy mother was not home. That was the first thing I checked when Bonnie and I walked through the front door. Her car was not in the driveway and her keys were not on the hook. The house had that empty smell the kind of silence that meant I could do whatever I wanted for at least two hours."Your mom is gone?" Bonnie asked."Gone gone. She has a work thing. Will not be back until late."Bonnie dropped her bag on the couch and looked around the living room like she was seeing it for the first time. The colorful pillows...the stack of magazines on the coffee table...the photograph of me and my mother at the beach last summer."So what is the surprise?" she asked.I smiled. "The surprise is not a thing. The surprise is a person.""A person?""Two people actually."Bonnie's face went through several expressions in quick succession. Confusion...suspicion and then a flicker of somethin

MarcellusI heard about the field trip during morning announcements.Principal Whitmore came over the intercom at eight fifteen. His voice crackled through the speakers in my classroom. I was writing notes on the board with my back was turned to the students. I did not think much of it until I heard the words."Attention all staff and students. Permission slips for the Human Odyssey field trip are now available in the front office. The trip will take place next month. Three days and two nights at the state capital. Students must have a signed permission slip to attend."I stopped writing. The students in my class started whispering. Excited whispers. The kind of whispers that came from the promise of getting out of school. I turned around and looked at them. Their faces were bright as they were already making plans.I thought about Bonnie. She was in Human Odyssey. Ms. Rivera's class. The new teacher with the purple hair and the irritating smile. She would want to go. Of course she wo

MarcellusThe house was actually quiet for once.Clarissa was in the living room with a glass of wine and a stack of bridal magazines. She had been looking at them for weeks. The pages were already dog eared and marked with sticky notes and her laptop was open to a wedding planning website. She had pinned dresses and flowers and centerpieces. She had literally made them into spreadsheets.I stood in the doorway watching her silently. She did not notice me at first because she was too focused on a picture of a cake. Three tiers...white frosting...roses made of sugar.I walked into the room and sat down on the couch beside her."Hey," I said."Hey yourself." She looked up and smiled. "I was just looking at cakes. Do you think we should do chocolate or vanilla?""Both.""Both?""Half and half. That way everyone is happy."She laughed and wrote something down on a piece of paper. "That is actually a good idea. See, this is why I am marrying you."I put my arm around her and she leaned int

BonnieThe painters arrived at eight in the morning.I heard their truck before I saw it. The rumble of the engine followed by the slamming of doors and voices calling out instructions to each other. I was still in my pajamas when my mother knocked on my door."Bonnie. They are here...the painters.""I know. I heard them.""Can you help them? I have a meeting."She did not wait for an answer. Her footsteps faded down the stairs and the front door opened and closed.I got out of bed and pulled on a pair of old jeans and a t shirt that already had paint stains on it. I twisted my hair into a bun and went downstairs. The hallway was chaos. Buckets of paint lined the walls. Drop cloths covered the floor. Two men were carrying a ladder toward the guest rooms, a woman was taping the edges of the baseboards. The smell of fresh paint hung in the air like a promise and I weirdly liked it."He

MarcellusThe first thing I noticed as Ieft my room was that the house was empty.Clarissa had left early for a work meeting. I heard her car pull out of the driveway at seven. The front door closed and her footsteps faded down the steps. Then silence. Just the hum of the refrigerator and the tick of the living room clock and the knowledge that Bonnie was still upstairs.I should have left for school. I should have grabbed my briefcase and my keys and walked out the door. Instead I poured a cup of coffee and sat at the kitchen table and waited. She came down at seven fifteen. Her hair was wet. She had just showered and she was wearing her uniform and I noticed that it stick more to her bod. Her bag was slung over one shoulder and she was looking at her phone. She did not see me at first."Good morning," I said. She looked up and her eyes widened. Just for a second then she recovered."I though
