Semua Bab Three Lives, Two Mates, One Enemy: Bab 141 - Bab 146

WrenBereth arrived on a Friday in early summer, which meant nothing to the tally except that Sela added it anyway, which is the thing Sela does — she marks what arrives whether or not it fits a category. He was forty-two and looked sixty, which is what nineteen years of the dissolving-thing does to a body. Not sick, not broken — worn, the way stone gets worn smooth at the edge where water runs over it, the specific wearing of something that has been in contact with a force for too long without enough rest. His hands were the worst of it. They had the quality of things that had been held too tightly for too long and had forgotten how to open easily.I watched him come through the gate and I thought about Asha, who'd been forty-nine and looked timeless, the wearing having happened differently. And I thought about Corin, who'd been twenty-three and was thirty-one now, older around the eyes but with his hands intact except for the gray one, which had become simply his hand. The dissolvin

SeraphineDavan asked me to stay.He said it on a Tuesday morning at the border crossing, which I mention because Sela has made me note days that matter and Tuesday is apparently the day things get said in this territory, and this was a thing that needed saying. We'd been at the crossing for eight months together, long enough that the rhythms of the work had become shared without discussion — he took the morning watch because he wakes earlier, I take the evening reports because I read faster, we both do the pack captain meetings because two voices in a room carry differently than one and we've learned which kind of situation needs which one of us in front and when to switch. The kind of working arrangement that develops when two people have decided the work matters more than who gets credit for it."Stay," he said. "When the governance transition happens and I take the second keeper post with Aldric. Stay at the crossing."I looked at him."You don't need me here," I said. "You run th

AMARA Orren's people came three weeks later, which was faster than I'd expected and slower than Zane had predicted, which meant neither of us had been right but we'd bracketed the truth between us, which is how we work most things. There were seven of them. Not soldiers — advisors, the kind that dress like diplomats and move like people who've spent a long time in rooms where decisions get made and have learned to carry that weight in their posture. They arrived at the Orrath's gate on a clear morning and asked for the keeper of the covenant, which was Wren, and the representative of the governance, which was Aldric, and the three, which was us.Rell wasn't back yet. I sent a rider north that morning. We met them in the hall, which Aldric had arranged because the hall has the map and the governance records and the tally wall visible through the open door, and the specific quality of a room that is doing serious work rather than performing it. We sat across from each other at the long
