"A divorce?" The word felt foreign in my mouth. It felt like saying a word so many times it stops meaning anything. "Why? Did I do something wrong?"Justin looked at me the way someone looks at a question they consider too simple to answer seriously."You've been sick for two years, Harper." He moved to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water like we were discussing something mundane. Like we were talking about the electricity bill. "I didn't sign up to be a nurse. I've waited. I've tried to be patient. But I'm done watching my life disappear around your hospital appointments."I stared at him.Two years. Two years of fighting to stay alive, of pushing through days when getting out of bed felt like climbing a mountain, of trying not to be a burden, of apologizing for being sick like it was something I had chosen. Two years of loving a man who had apparently been keeping a countdown."And her?" I looked at Vivian on the couch.Vivian didn't even look up."That's not your concer

"I'm sorry, Harper."Dr. Joel was standing at the foot of my hospital bed and he was still in his grey sweater. He hadn't had time to change. There was blood on his sleeve, my blood, and he was standing there with the face of a man who had delivered terrible news before but never found it easy."The pregnancy." He stopped.I knew. I had known somewhere between the floor of that empty apartment and the back of his car. My body had known before my brain was willing to."You lost it."The words dropped into the room like stones into still water.I stared at the ceiling.I had never said it out loud to anyone. Not once. I had carried it for three weeks, this small enormous secret, and told no one, not Justin, not a friend, not a single person on earth. It had existed only inside me and now it didn't exist at all and I was the only one alive who knew there was something to grieve. The loneliness of that was indescribable."Harper." Dr. Joel moved to the chair beside my bed. He sat down car

The first treatment nearly killed me.Not literally. Dr. Reeves told me afterward that my vitals had remained stable throughout and that what I experienced was a completely normal response. I was fairly certain Dr. Reeves and I had different definitions of the word normal.I lay in the treatment room afterward with my eyes closed and every cell in my body feeling like it had been individually disagreed with and I thought, very clearly: I cannot do this for three rounds.Audrey brought me water and crackers and sat nearby doing paperwork without making it feel like she was watching me, which I appreciated more than I could say."First one is always the worst," she said without looking up."You say that to everyone?""Only the ones who look like they're reconsidering."I looked at the ceiling. Different ceiling, same view."I'm not reconsidering," I said. She looked up then. She had a straightforward, no-nonsense quality that I was starting to find quietly comforting."Good," she said.

Round two was worse than round one.I had been warned. Dr. Reeves told me in the same tone she used for everything, factual and without softening, that the second round of targeted infusion therapy typically produced a stronger immune response than the first because the treatment was working. The body was fighting back against the reset. That was the point.Understanding why something hurts does not make it hurt less.I spent three days barely leaving my bed. The fatigue was the kind that sat on your chest like something physical. My joints ached. I ran a fever that the medical team monitored closely and declared acceptable in a way that suggested acceptable covered a wide range of concerning things.Audrey brought me soup on the second day and sat on the edge of my bed and read out loud from a novel she had in her bag without asking if I wanted her to. I did not tell her to stop. Her voice was steady and the story was about two people sailing across the Atlantic and it was so far fro

I called William Carr on a Friday morning, standing at my window with the card in my hand and my heart beating slightly faster than usual. He picked up on the second ring."I was wondering when you would call," he said. Like he had been expecting it. Like the months between our garden conversation and this moment were simply what he had accounted for."I am ready," I said."I know." A pause. "Can you be in the city Monday?"I looked around my small room at the Harlow Institute. The blue curtains. The two plants. The stack of communications materials I had reorganized into something useful."Yes," I said."Good. My office. Ten o'clock. Come prepared to tell me what you want to build."He hung up.I stood at the window for a long time after that.I left the Institute on a Sunday.Dr. Reeves walked me out, which she had not done for any patient that Audrey could remember. She shook my hand at the door in that brisk unsentimental way of hers."I will need your check-in bloodwork at four w
