Chapter 141

Glinda POVEthan went quiet for a long moment, staring at the floor. When he finally spoke, his voice was lower, almost careful.“One thing I know for sure is that Kevrain is a very crazy person. I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised if I found out he was the one who sent those guys after me. What would surprise me is that he still has people watching me after all this time. And for what? Why the hell would he still want me beaten up?” He shook his head once, then winced. “Anyway… I don’t want to talk about it right now. I feel weak, and my mouth is still aching like hell.”I reached up and rested my hand lightly on his uninjured forearm.“It’s fine,” I said softly. “You can rest. You don’t have to explain anything else tonight.”He gave a small nod, the tension in his shoulders easing just a fraction.I stood and went to the kitchen. The familiar motions of measuring coffee grounds and pouring water into the machine helped steady my hands. When the pot finished, I poured a mug, added a

Chapter 142

Glinda POVI forced myself through the last of the assignments, the cursor blinking like it was judging every half-hearted sentence I typed and then by the time I hit save and closed the laptop, the remaining light outside had already started to soften. Even as I had spent hours on my assignments, my head still felt heavy as thoughts were still circling the same tired track…Ethan, the bruises, the unanswered questions and at that moment was when the doorbell rang.I quickly went to get the door and found Ronnie standing on the other side with a canvas tote bag overstuffed to the point of near-collapse, grinning like she’d just won something.“Sleepover,” she announced before I could even say hello. “No arguments. I brought snacks, face masks, the good snacks! It’s been forever!”“Oh my goodness! When did you come back!” I said, half smiling, still half surprised.“Oh please, when I came is as unimportant as next year’s weather forecast. Now scoot,”I stepped aside, a small smile tugg

Chapter 143

Glinda POVI forced a brighter smile and reached for another chip. “You’re right. Fun only. No more heavy stuff tonight.”Ronnie grinned, already cueing up the next terrible episode, and the rest of the night blurred into laughter, half-eaten snacks, and the soft glow of the television until we both drifted off on the living-room floor, tangled in blankets. But nonetheless, later in the night my bladder woke me and I slipped carefully out from under the shared blanket, careful not to wake Ronnie, and padded toward the bathroom. On the way back I glanced at my bedroom door left slightly ajar from earlier and something felt off. The curtain near the window was shifting, which meant the window was open which surprised me because I was very sure I had left the window closed. I stepped inside. The window was very wide open and it made my stomach drop. Heart slamming against my ribs, I froze in the doorway and scanned every shadow. Closet. Under the bed. Behind the door. Nothing. No one.

Chapter 144

Glinda POVI closed the door behind him and stood still for a long moment, the quiet of the guest room settling around me like a held breath. The bags sat neatly on the couch and the bed looked almost too perfect, the kind of perfect that made me feel like I was borrowing someone else’s life for a night.I walked into the bathroom. It was larger than the one I had at home, all clean white tile and soft lighting, a glass-walled shower that took up half the space. I turned the water on hot, stripped out of the clothes that still carried the faint scent of the store aisle and someone else’s cologne, and stepped under the spray.Steam rose and heat loosened the last of the tension in my shoulders. I washed slowly, methodically, letting the water run over my face, my neck, the places where the stranger’s hand had rested for those few seconds that had felt like forever. By the time I stepped out and wrapped myself in the thick towel left on the rack, my skin felt new.I pulled on the softes

Chapter 145

Glinda POVI felt his breath hitch, as if his mind just couldn’t process what I had just said, but he did not hesitate and immediately shifted closer on the bed, one arm sliding around my waist with careful strength, and pulled me against him until my back rested fully against his chest. The heat of him seeped through the thin fabric of my sleep clothes as his other hand settled lightly at my hip, not possessive, just present and I could feel the steady rise and fall of his breathing against my spine.“Like this?” he asked, voice low near my ear.I nodded, eyes already half-closed. “Yeah. Just like this.”We stayed that way for a long while, no one speaking. Outside, the last of the daylight faded into deep blue and the house was quiet except for the distant hum of the air conditioning and the occasional soft creak of settling wood.At this moment, I knew I should have drifted off easily, but because of the proximity or maybe something else, something restless stirred under my skin.

Chapter 146

I arrived at my own home and immediately bounced into my bed, eyes fixed on the ceiling as I pondered hard on what happened as if thinking too much would change anything. But then, at that very moment, my phone started ringing and the sound of it cut through the quiet like a blade. I flinched, heart slamming against my ribs as I reached for it and Ethan’s name lit up the screen. Just seeing it made my stomach twist. My thumb hovered over the answer button for half a second before panic took over and I turned the phone off completely, the screen going black, and tossed it onto the nightstand like it burned.I wasn’t ready. Not to hear his voice. Not to explain. Not to face whatever soft, careful questions he would ask.I needed time to process the fact that I had let him touch me, that I had come apart under his mouth while my mind had been somewhere else entirely. The shame sat thick in my chest. Should I apologize? The thought rose and I immediately shook my head against the pillo

Ethan POVI know I have said it before but this time I meant it when I said I had changed for Glinda. I wanted this to work, for it to go in the right way, not because I was in a competition with Kavrian, but because I believed that I could be that man for Glinda if she gave me the chance. Sitting across from her in that quiet living room, watching the way she kept her eyes on the floor while the last of her confession hung between us, I felt the old version of myself try to rise. The one who would have pushed. The one who would have demanded answers or turned the whole mess into a scoreboard against my brother. That version had cost me her once already. I shut it down hard.“I understand,” I repeated, softer this time, because the first time hadn’t been enough. “And I can wait as long as you want me to. Just don’t push me away.”She nodded, still not looking at me and the silence that followed wasn’t empty. It was heavy with everything she hadn’t said about Kavrian, about the way he

Chapter 148

Ethan POVThe drive back to her place felt different from every other time I had taken that road, and the windows were down just enough to let the night air in. Glinda sat close enough that her knee brushed mine whenever the car shifted gears. Neither of us spoke much. The silence wasn’t awkward… it was charged, like the air before a summer storm finally breaks. When I parked in her driveway she didn’t move right away. She stared at the dark shape of her front door for a few seconds, then turned to me.“Come inside,” she said. Not a question. Not hesitant the way it had been earlier. Just quiet and certain.I followed her in. The house was still and dim, the only light coming from the small lamp she always left on in the hallway. She locked the door behind us, set her keys on the table, and turned. For a moment we just looked at each other. Then she stepped forward, rose on her toes, and kissed me again—deeper this time, slower, the careful testing from the pier replaced by something

Chapter 149

Glinda POVIt’s been two weeks since me and Ethan became official and honestly, it had been nothing but peaceful. We had not fought and he was always patient with me. It was almost as if he lived to serve me, as if he had prayed for this day and made a vow that nothing on earth would ruin the relationship we were building. And honestly, I loved it. However, it still did not change the fact that I still had not fallen in love with him yet, I was still trying to. Trying to make this work and make sense. I wanted to love him and finally forget Kavrain because honestly, he had been proving over the past few weeks that he was a deserving man. I honestly thought with time we would eventually work until…“What are you talking about Ethan?” I asked, my eyebrow raised in confusion as I stared at Ethan who had just barged into the room, accusing me of seeing someone else. He paced around for a whole, fingers clenching and unclenching before saying, “Last night, you told me you were going to

Chapter 150

Glinda POVAnother two weeks passed and the whole time, I avoided Ethan like a leech. I didn’t care that he had been hospitalized for three days after laying his hands on me as some guys beat him up again mercilessly until he almost died… it was as if someone was getting revenge for me, dealing with Ethan for daring to hit me.I heard the details in fragments as Ronnie told me first, voice tight with a satisfaction she didn’t bother hiding. Then a mutual classmate mentioned it in the hallway, eyes wide, saying Ethan had been found behind the old gym, face unrecognizable, ribs cracked, one arm broken. He spent three days in the hospital. I never visited. I never called. When his name lit up my phone I let it ring until it stopped. When flowers appeared on my porch with a handwritten note I threw them straight into the trash. When he showed up outside my last lecture of the week I turned the other way and kept walking even as he called my name, voice still rough from whatever damage
