CHARLIE I leaned back in my chair."I've known your mum since she was about your age."The laughter faded into a quieter voice."Really?""You sound exactly like she did.""I do?""You do."Someone whispered beside her.I recognized Theo's voice even though I couldn't make out the words.Lena lowered her own voice as though she were sharing an important secret."Can you pick us up from school?"I looked around the conference room.Half a dozen directors were waiting for the meeting to continue."Where's your driver?""He's picking us up later.""What time does school finish?""In twenty minutes," Lena said.I glanced at my watch."I'll be there.""Really?""Yes."Another burst of laughter came through the speaker."Thank you, Mr. Charlie."The call ended. For a moment I remained where I was, the phone still in my hand.Every face around the table was looking at me.I cleared my throat."I'm afraid we'll have to continue this tomorrow."One of the directors blinked."Is everything all

NORASaturday mornings always moved at a gentler pace.I had already cracked the last egg into the pan when footsteps sounded on the staircase."Morning, Mum."I turned as Theo reached the kitchen doorway, his hair still untidy from sleep. Lena followed close behind, rubbing one eye with the back of her hand before she smiled."Morning."I bent to kiss Theo's forehead before doing the same to Lena."Did you both sleep well?"Theo nodded.Theo straightened the cushions that had been left uneven on the sofa the previous evening while Lena folded the blanket lying across one arm of the chair and carried two books back to the shelf.I rested one hand against the kitchen counter and watched them."I didn't ask you to do that."Theo looked over his shoulder."We know."Lena placed the last book onto the shelf."It looks nicer this way."By the time breakfast was ready, the sitting room looked exactly as it had before yesterday had scattered toys, books and cushions across it.I wiped my han

NORA "What are you doing here?"Before Charlie answered, Lena smiled brightly."We're back."Theo adjusted the robot in his hands."Hi, Mum."I looked from one of them to the other.Victor closed the front door behind Alexander."Mr. Sinclair dropped them home."My eyes moved to Victor."I see."Lena nodded a little too quickly."We're home now."Theo nodded at his sister.Charlie rested one hand in his pocket."The twins asked if I could see Theo's robot before I left."Theo lifted it carefully."I've nearly finished it.""I wanted to show him," Lena added.I looked at Victor."They haven't been causing trouble?"Victor smiled."They've been excellent company."Lena folded her hands behind her back."I told you we would behave."Theo nodded, then said, “And we did."I looked at both of them for another moment. There was a brightness in their faces that usually meant they were hiding something.I couldn't tell what.Charlie bent slightly until he was almost level with them."I should

Sunday mornings had always been the quietest part of Margaret's week.Sunlight spilled across the breakfast table, warming the cup of tea beside her newspaper. She had read the same paragraph twice without taking in a single word. Her attention kept drifting toward the sideboard where her handbag rested. The receipt from the DNA laboratory was still inside. She had told herself she would be patient. The results would come when they came. Her phone rang before she reached for the teacup. She looked at the screen, it was the laboratory. Her fingers hesitated over the answer button before she accepted the call."Mrs. Sinclair?""Speaking.""Good morning. Your DNA analysis has been completed. The report is ready for collection whenever it's convenient."Margaret closed her eyes briefly."I can be there within the hour.""We'll have everything prepared.""Thank you."She ended the call and lowered the phone on the table. She stood up quickly and walked upstairs, then changed into a white b

NoraMonday slipped away quickly.By the time I stepped out of the final meeting, the floor had already begun to empty.I collected my handbag, switched off the light in my office and walked toward the lift.I stepped outside. The black SUV still stood where Diana had parked it earlier. Its polished surface reflected the fading light, making it impossible to pretend I hadn't noticed it all day.The driver's door opened almost immediately.A man in a dark suit stepped out and straightened his jacket before walking toward me.He looked to be in his early forties, with neatly trimmed hair."Good evening, Ms. Vance,"He stopped a respectful distance away."My name is Daniel."I inclined my head."Good evening."He held a small envelope in one hand."Mr. Sinclair's assistant asked me to give you this if we met."I accepted it without opening it.I looked past him at the SUV."I haven't decided whether I'll keep the vehicle.""Yes, ma'am.""I intend to return it."He nodded once."I underst
