Elara took her hand, but Deborah pulled away, saying, "I need space," out of self-preservation,"Not because I don't love you, but because I can't keep watching you walk into danger and pretend that I am fine."Elara choked out, "Please don't shut me out," and Deborah shut her eyes. "I am not shutting you out," she said, "I am trying not to break completely."She reached for her coat and keys, her hands trembling."Where are you going?" Elara asked."I don't know," Deborah said. "Somewhere I can breathe without feeling like I'm losing you."She stood at the door for a moment, then turned back."If he hurts you, I will never forgive him," she said, voice shaking with barely contained emotion, "and I don't know if I'll ever forgive you either."The words stung them both, but they were honest. Deborah left the room and stepped out into the hallway, slumping against the door, losing the battle to keep her composure.
