“You look happy,” I heard to my right. My body reacted instinctively, swinging a punch in that direction at the head of the person who had snuck up on me. Jorgsten did not look bothered. If anything, he was amused by my reaction, grinning widely.“Those senses of yours. Do you know how hard I have been working to trick them?” he said.I let out an irritated sigh, turning my back to him. Before I could take a step, he said something that made me freeze. “The dragon egg is about to hatch.”My mind took a few seconds to file that information away and process the implications before coming to the astute conclusion that it was none of my business. I was about to continue walking when Jorgsten stopped me again.“Ryan, when are you going to tell Lucia the truth?”My jaw tightened. This. This bullshit was the exact reason I did not want this man, or more accurately, beast in this city. He was going to start running his mouth like a talkative.“I have no idea what you are talking about,” I rep

Lucia’s POVRyan was with the junior troops when I found him. When he saw me, his entire body stiffened but he managed a nod. Before he could turn away, I closed the distance between our bodies and clamped a hand down on his shoulder. “The ships have sailed.”He made no indication that he heard me for a few seconds before he let out a deep sigh. “I will be with you in a minute.”“I am sure that Killian can handle the training for the junior troops for now,” I said, looking pointedly at the senior commander of the junior troops.Daniel was their main commander but he had been promoted to a sort of advisory role. Killian was now good and old enough to join the main troops but it did not make much sense to me to make him start from the ground up as a grunt in the main troops. It would be a waste of his talents so I would leave him as a supervisor of the junior troops and maybe a member of one of the task forces for a few more years before I gave him a junior commander position in the mai

Lucia’s POVDaniel remained glued to my side until sunset, following me around the house as I slowly got ready to leave.Somehow, I was even more clear-headed than yesterday, thinking up possible variables that could disrupt the mission and thinking to pack more optimally for the length of time that we were going to be gone. While Ryan had just a simple pack probably filled with essentials, mine had come to something nearly the size of a small-sized suitcase. When I came down the stairs, Ryan stared down at the box and then looked up at me like I was being ridiculous. I kept his gaze for a good few seconds to inform him that I was not joking.“Fine,” he said and picked up the suitcase. “If we need to run, what are you taking?”“My essentials pack is on my back. Besides, there is nothing important that I would miss so I rigged it with self-destruct technology,” I said, going behind him.If wolves were chasing us, I can throw the bag at them and detonate it to buy us more time to run.R

Lucia’s POVThe leader of the group had introduced himself as Gio. Now, we were both talking and he was reconsidering his South City goal.“A four hour drive,” he kept muttering to himself. “And you guys came through the forest. That could be nearly a week on foot, if I am being generous. Not to talk of the dangers.”A woman stepped forward and held his arm. “But if we are able to make it, we will stop this life of moving up and down because we do not have a home.” She took his hand and pressed it against her stomach. “Gio, please.”“That is all the more reason I do not want to risk such a journey. What if you get hurt, Amare?”Her eyes watered but she shook her head. “I would rather die than bring our child into this world the way it is, where we are not even sure of where we would raise them. Gio, please…we are all tired. If we can get to South City…”She turned to me and held my hands. “Forgive my husband. He has always had that skeptical nature. Actually, all of us here were priso

Lucia’s POVI waited in the car, looking outside the window for Ryan to return. I was not sure what exactly the reason was but he was treating me like an egg. What was it that he said again?“It is not that I do not trust you. It is just that I do not want to put you in danger for no reason since I can handle this myself.”What a roundabout way of saying that he did not trust me. Regardless, if he insisted that he could handle this himself, there was no need to force him to take me. Now, I was just wondering why he even brought me on this journey in the first place?I could have just sent him with the weapons and explosives and he would have done the whole thing himself. The thought was barely complete in my mind when he jogged out of the tunnel, his bag empty. He returned to the car and got in the driver’s seat. “We should get somewhere further down. I added more explosives than before.”I did not say anything as he started the car and started to drive us down. After about ten minute
