Chapter 101: What did the boy give you?

Chapter 101: Serena's POV "Tell me about him."Kyle doesn't look up from his desk when I walk in, but he says it before I've even closed the door, which means he already knows why I'm here. Thirty years of marriage teaches you to read a man's back the same way you read his face."You already heard," I say. "From whoever's been reporting to you.""I heard that you went to the cottage and that you stayed three hours. I did not hear what happened inside." He sets down his pen. "So. Tell me."I sit down across from him without waiting for an invitation, which I have learned over three decades is sometimes the only way to make Kyle Blackthorn treat a conversation as a conversation rather than a report."His name is Landon," I say. "He's six. He has her eyes — Elara's — and your jaw, Kyle, which is almost funny given everything. He has Ronan's exact laugh. I heard it before I even saw him, through the kitchen window, and for one full second I thought I was hearing our son at six years old

Chapter 102: Just Have a picture

Chapter 102: Elara's POV "You wanted to see me."Ryker's voice carries across the café before he sits down, and I look up from my coffee and gesture at the chair across from me. He sits carefully, folder in hand, and I notice he's dressed less formally than usual, no suit jacket, just a plain sweater against the winter cold, like he's trying to be someone she'd talk to rather than someone delivering a briefing."I agreed to the meeting," I say. "That should tell you something.""It does." He sets the folder on the table but doesn't open it yet. "Thank you for coming.""What did you want to tell me?"He opens the folder, "Ronan formally ended the commitment with Vivian three days ago," he says. "Called Victor directly. Told him the agreement was void and Victor threatened war. Ronan told him to do his worst, that I'd submit the full Council file if he tried anything." He slides a document across the table. "Here's the confirmation. Officially dissolved."I look at it and read it, then

Chapter 103: And we did it!!

Chapter 103: Ryker's POV "Father's on his way up."Rafe says it from the window, watching the street below, and I look up from the Council correspondence I've been drafting and feel something settle in my chest that isn't quite dread. Something steadier than that."He didn't call ahead," I say."He never does."Ronan comes out of his room fully dressed, which tells me he heard through the wall the same way he heard the first time Father showed up. "Same routine," he says. "Knock, no warning, assess the room before he says a word.""Then let's be ready for him," I say.We don't scramble. That's the thing I notice as the knock comes, three sharp raps, exactly like before and none of us moves with the tension we had the first time. Ronan opens the door. Father steps inside and does what he always does, cataloguing the room in a glance. The coffee cups. The blueprint that's been living permanently on the dining table since Landon started leaving it there. The oxygen unit that's still in

Chapter 104: What is an he doing here?

Chapter 104: Elara's POV I heard a knock on the door at exactly four in the afternoon, and when I open the door, Kyle Blackthorn is standing on my porch.I know him instantly even though I've never seen his face in person... the same silver eyes as Ryker, sharper somehow, the same bone structure I've watched in three different arrangements across three different sons. He's tall, broad-shouldered, dressed like a man who has spent his life in rooms where his presence alone settled every argument before it started. He looks smaller than I imagined.I've spent years building this man into something enormous in my mind... the shadow behind everything, the architect of the field house, the reason three twenty-two-year-olds chose cruelty over honesty. And here he is, on my porch, in ordinary winter clothes, looking like exactly what he is: an old man who made a decision decades ago that he has been living inside of ever since.Serena stands slightly behind him. She catches my eye and give

CHAPTER 105: sweet reunion

Chapter 105: Elara's POV "Careful," Landon says. "The base isn't fully secure yet."Kyle holds the top block in both hands, kneeling on my kitchen floor, and looks at the tower with the same seriousness he'd give a Council briefing. "Show me the base again," he says.Landon points out the foundation blocks with great patience, explaining the load distribution the way he's clearly explained it to everyone else who's sat on this floor, Ronan, Ryker, Rafe, now his grandfather. Kyle listens like it's the most important information he's received all week, which, I'm starting to suspect, it might genuinely be."That one's Uncle Ronan," Landon says, pointing. "He's loud but he holds things together anyway. That one's Uncle Ryker, he's the base because he thinks about everything first. That one's Rafe, he's in the middle because he's steady." He looks up at Kyle. "And you're the top one. Because grandfathers go on top. Everyone below holds you up even if you don't always deserve it."The kit

Chapter 106: It's all begins to soften

Chapter 106: Elara's POV "He cried."Mom looks up from the stove. Kyle and Serena left twenty minutes ago... Serena hugging me at the door with a warmth that still catches me off guard, Kyle pausing on the porch to say something quiet to Landon that made him laugh and now the cottage is quiet again, just the three of us, Landon upstairs already deep into his evening blueprint revisions."When?" Mom asks."When Landon put the block in his hands. Told him grandfathers go on top and everyone else holds them up even if they don't always deserve it." I sit down at the kitchen table, still slightly stunned by the whole afternoon. "He almost cried. He did cry, actually. Just didn't make a production of it."Mom sets down her spoon and comes to sit across from me. "Kyle Blackthorn," she says slowly, testing the name."I know.""The man who orchestrated the whole thing.""I know, Mom.""Cried. On your kitchen floor. Over a wooden block tower.""I was there. I watched it happen." I press my

Chapter 107: I Withdraw The Ultimatum

Chapter 107: Rafe's Pov Father comes to the suite without knocking this time.I hear the door and look up from the training equipment I've been cleaning out of habit rather than necessity, and he's standing in the doorway looking at all three of us with an expression I don't fully recognize. Not the assessment he usually runs. Something quieter."I'd like to talk," he says. "If you're willing."Ryker sets down his laptop. Ronan straightens from where he's been sprawled on the couch. I put down the equipment."We're willing," Ryker says.Father comes in and sits down. This alone tells me something has shifted, he never sits unless he decides the conversation warrants it, and I can't remember the last time he chose to sit rather than stand over a room he was assessing. For a long moment none of us says anything. The suite is quiet, late afternoon light coming through the window, the ordinary sounds of Silverveil below us going about its day."I went to the cottage," Father says finall

Chapter 108: You Carried all the pain alone

Chapter 108: Elara's POV "Come in. Sit down."I open the cottage door and they file in... Ryker first, then Rafe, then Ronan, all three of them looking around the small living room like they're not entirely sure where they're allowed to stand. Mom left twenty minutes ago with Landon, taking him to Serena's hotel for the afternoon with a promise of room service and whatever activities the two of them dream up together, which knowing my son and his new grandmother will probably involve a full architectural review of the hotel's structural integrity. This is the first time we've been in a room together voluntarily. Not because of a crisis, nor because a fire needed treating or a photograph needed explaining or a document needed unsigning. Just because I asked them to come, and they came. They sit. Ryker in the chair by the window, Ronan on the couch, Rafe in the chair nearest mine. I sit across from all three of them, and for a moment none of us says anything, the cottage quiet around

Chapter 109: I just keep showing up.

Chapter 109: Ryker's POV "You've been doing this for two weeks."Rafe says it from across the hotel suite kitchen, watching me put the lid on a paper cup with a precision that probably doesn't need this much focus. I don't look up."Doing what.""The coffee." He crosses his arms, leaning against the counter. "Every morning. You make an extra cup, you walk it to the clinic, you leave it at the front desk, and you leave before she comes out." "It's coffee, Rafe.""It's a pattern." He says it without accusation, just observation, the way he's learned to say things since the conversation in the cottage two weeks ago. "You used to strategize everything. Every gesture had an angle, even the honest ones. Now you're just... showing up. Without waiting to see if it lands."I finish sealing the cup and pick it up. "That's the point."I walk to the clinic the long way, past the market square, because the morning is cold and clear and I like the extra ten minutes of quiet before the day starts

Chapter 110: You are allowed to want them.

Chapter 110: Elara's POV "You're doing it again."Penda's voice pulls me back from wherever I've drifted. I'm standing at the clinic window, chart still in my hand, and I realize I've been watching the street below for longer than I meant to, not for a patient, not for anything work-related. Just watching."Doing what," I say."Looking for them." She says it without judgment, just observation, the same way she used to tell me she'd heard the engagement rumor months ago. "You've done it three times this week that I've noticed. Window, door, whenever a car pulls up outside."I feel my face warm slightly. "I'm not — ""You are." She smiles. "It's nice, actually. You used to flinch every time the door opened. Now you look up like you're hoping."I don't have a response for that, because she's right and I know she's right and I've been slowly noticing it myself over the last several days without fully letting the noticing become something I examine directly.I finish my shift. I walk hom
