CHAPTER 41SANTIAGO MY SECOND SOULI was so certain Marco was going to be here when Callie and I walked through the double doors. This was his second home. If he was not in school, he was here or at home. Nothing prepared me for the disappointment that met us.I watched Callie’s face collapse in slow motion, like someone had just pulled the ground from under her feet. Hurt, confusion and that sharp punch of betrayal she wasn’t ready for.She looked like she was about to break.“W-what?” She stepped closer. “No. No, that…. that doesn’t make sense.” Her words caught in her throat for a second before they came back. “Marco wouldn’t just… go somewhere without…without saying anything.”The worker lifted his hands and shrugged his shoulders. “I’m sorry, miss, that’s what he told me. I know nothing beyond that.”Callie’s eyes widened, then narrowed, not in anger, but in desperation. I was started when she grabbed the counter.“No. You’re lying. There has to be something you are not telling

CHAPTER 42MARCONUMB TO THE PAINWho would've thought a man like my father could be asleep devil's incarnate. Scratch that, my father was definitely a man who had gone to hell and came back friends with the devil. For a second, after his threat, I watched him walk without following behind him. But I gave up and just started following behind him. My father hummed as he walked, like… he was actually humming.Walking ahead of me like we had just come back from a picnic and not an underground lab filled with half-dead humans he wanted to forcibly turn into monsters.Meanwhile, my hands were clenched so tight my knuckles were white, and all I could hear replaying in my head was his threat:“Call that girl and warn her and your best friends to stay away—or you'll be the reason they're in danger.”⁹He didn’t even try to hide the satisfaction in his voice. It was clear he enjoyed watching me break. The bastard. How did I come to be birthed to such a man? God! My mum had a terrible taste in

CHAPTER 43CALLIEQUARTER BROKEN HEARTED AND A SILVER LINING I was lost. Completely lost. Staring into space, my vision blurred like it was the most interesting thing. For a moment, I couldn't hear Santiago's voice, it mixed with the background as Marco’s words wouldn’t stop replaying like a broken record player in my head .“Stop calling me.”“Stay away from me.”“Don’t try to reach me again.”“You’re her little bitch.”The last one was to Santiago, but somehow it still hit me, like I was the reason he had to lash out at Santiago. Every sentence cut deeper than the last and every syllable was stuck to my head. My chest hurts, my stomach is twisting and no matter how many times I blinked, my eyes wouldn't stop burning. When Santiago ended the call after cussing Marco out, his hand was shaking, and when he turned to look at me… I think seeing my face made him even angrier. He inhaled shakily, running his fingers along the strands of his hair in pure frustration. “Callie… look at me.”

CHAPTER 44MARCO CLUESMy father had pushed the operation to a few days after, after he got a call I had no idea what was spoken about. He made sure to drill me in about how the whole thing worked while I listened with absolutely no interest whatsoever. The days went by faster than I wanted, and soon we were in the living room again and my father was briefing me all over again. “You understand, Marco?” He asked, and I nodded my head. It was simple. Get to the warehouse, ask nicely for formalities and if they don't, you take it by force. And taking it by force meant spilling blood. And I wasn't going to be spilling any blood. I was almost out the door when my father's voice stopped me again. “Marco,” my father called from behind me. “Come here quickly.”I stopped in my tracks and turned slowly, already irritated by whatever he wanted to say. He was standing next to the couch, holding something heavy and metallic in his hand. No doubt it was a gun. Of course. He extended it towar

CHAPTER 45CALLIE MAYBE…. JUST MAYBEWhat a chaos the past week has turned out to be! The fluorescent lights in the hospital hallway shine brightly above me, the kind of brightness that burns your skin when you've been sitting in the same spot for too long. I sat curled up on the long bench, elbows on my knees, staring at the linoleum floor like maybe it would give me answers.Matteo still hadn’t woken up. It's been days of hearing beeping monitors, watching Santiago try to be okay and my stupid heart trying not to break again and again every hour. And Marco’s voice… God! It still echoed in my head like a repeating curse. I pressed my palm against my chest as I felt it hurting physically again. My head turned slightly to the side and I almost jumped in shock to see someone sitting beside me. I didn’t even hear the footsteps when the man sat beside me. Actually, I didn’t know when he got there. I thought I was the only one here. How can someone be so quiet and motionless?Weird.I

CHAPTER 46CALLIESTRANGE THINGS The drive back home was silent in a way that almost deafened my ears. This was not peaceful silence, no, this one buzzed in a thick and heavy manner. Like all three of us were swallowing questions we weren’t ready to ask.Matteo was asleep, slumped gently against the car window, breathing steadily. His lashes fluttered every now and then like his body was still remembering pain. Sienna sat beside him, unusually still, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Santiago drove with both hands stiff on the wheel, his jaw tense enough to crack. No one said anything. Not a single word.I didn’t even trust my voice to work. And I wasn’t sure if I wanted it to.By the time we reached the house, Matteo barely stirred. Santiago lifted him effortlessly, like he was afraid Matteo would stop breathing, and carried him inside. I opened the bedroom door and helped pull the blanket back as Santiago laid his brother on the bed.Matteo let out a small breath but didn’t wake

CHAPTER 47MATTEO AN EMPTY VOIDDarkness. That was all I could see. It was either I had lost the function to my eyes or everywhere was just pitch black. It was a heavy, swallowing, endless kind of black that pressed against my skin like a second layer. It felt choking. I begged to see even if it was just a flicker of light. At least to confirm if I could see or not. Or if I was locked in a strange place. I didn’t remember closing my eyes, I didn’t remember falling asleep, hell, I didn't remember anything that led me here. I just… woke up here. Or whatever this was.My limbs felt like lead, my head was foggy and my chest felt tight. But the worst of all…. I couldn't feel what made me, me. I couldn't feel my wolf. A cold chill shot through me when it became evident that I couldn't feel it or hear its voice in my head. “Rogue?” I called into the void, panic surging through me. But I got nothing in response. My voice didn’t even echo, it just dissolved into the dark like it had been

CHAPTER 48CALLIE BLINDING HURTI walked out of Santiago and Marco's apartment like a ghost walking on land. By the time I got into the cab, my chest felt tight enough to crack and Sienna’s words kept replaying in my head like a haunting sound.“If Marco doesn’t come back to complete the bond, Matteo might not survive.”Matteo was dying because Marco wasn't here and because Marco didn't want anything to do with me. It's all because of me. It's my fault. I shouldn't have existed. My breath was unstable as I pressed a hand to my chest, staring blankly out the window as the streets blurred past. The pressure behind my eyes built and built until a single tear slipped out, running down my cheek without my permission. Then another, and another, until uncontrollable sobs were racking through my chest.I tried wiping them quickly, hoping the cabman wouldn’t notice, but of course he did. He kept glancing at me through the rearview mirror and when he couldn't seal his mouth anymore, he spoke.

CHAPTER 49MARCOEMBRACING MY REALITY And again, my father has found a way to tie the rope tighter around my neck.I sat at the edge of my bed with my elbows pressed into my knees, staring into nothing. Just the wall and the four corners of the room that now felt like I was in a prison cell only this time I'm wearing a fancy suit. This was my life now. Working for my father and living under his roof again. I was bathing the same air as a man who had spent my entire childhood teaching me how to survive him.Trapped—that was the word.I wasn’t chained physically, but there was no exit that didn’t lead to someone getting hurt. And Callie… my chest tightened. I couldn’t even think of her name without feeling like I was dragging a knife across my own ribs.Maybe this was it. Maybe accepting this reality was easier than fighting it. Right? I ran a hand through my hair, exhaled shakily, and finally stood. I had made my choice and embracing my reality, it is. If I was going to remain in thi

CHAPTER 50SANTIAGO EVERY ODD AT STAKEI stood frozen at the edge of Matteo’s bed, staring at him like my brain had suddenly emptied itself of every word I had ever known. I literally could not say a fucking word to him. How the hell was I supposed to say this? How do you tell your brother—your twin brother, that he’s dying? And his life lies in the hands of someone.Matteo’s dark eyes stayed fixed on me, completely hollow with exhaustion, but brightening with fear that he was trying so hard to hide.“Santiago,” he said slowly, snapping me out of my thoughts.“You’ve not answered the question I asked. Or are you ignoring me?”I swallowed hard, running my fingers through my hair before shaking my head.“No.”“So answer me.” His voice cracked, his tone carrying pleas. “Am I dying? Is there a reason why I can't feel my wolf?”My mouth opened but nothing came out. It was the first time in my life I couldn't say anything. He let out a bitter laugh under his breath, trying not to sound hur
