The manual override on the vault door completed its slow, grinding rotation.Kael was on his feet before the heavy metal had fully cleared the frame. He pushed me behind him with one arm, claws already extended, the amber in his eyes burning thin and unstable against the black that still waited at the edges. Without the bond I could not feel the surge of the failsafe directly, but I saw it in the rigid line of his shoulders and the too-controlled way he held himself ready. The door opened.Rafe stood in the gap.He was alone. Blood covered one side of his face and soaked through the torn remains of his shirt. His left arm hung at an unnatural angle. But his eyes were clear, and when they found us the relief that crossed his face was almost painful to see.“Alpha,” he rasped. “I thought I lost you both.”Kael did not lower his claws immediately. The failsafe was still too close to the surface, and without the bond his trust in anything outside the two of us had narrowed to almost nothi

The construction tunnels went on longer than any of us expected. We moved in a tight group through the raw stone corridors, Kael leading, Rafe bringing up the rear as best his injuries allowed, and me staying close enough to Kael that my shoulder brushed his arm with every other step. The air was cold and damp, carrying the mineral smell of deep earth and old groundwater. No corporate lighting had ever reached this far. The only illumination came from a scavenged chemical stick Rafe had cracked open, its weak green glow barely enough to show the uneven floor and the rough walls that pressed in on both sides. The bond remained gone.I kept testing the empty space where it had lived, the way the tongue keeps returning to the socket of a missing tooth. There was nothing. No low awareness of Kael’s emotions, no shared pulse of strength or warning. Only the ordinary senses and the small, stubborn spark that had survived the core’s severance a quiet certainty that he was still himself, stil

We ran until the chemical light began to stutter and the tunnels started to blur.Kael never released my hand. Even when the failsafe surged and his grip turned hard enough to bruise, he adjusted rather than let go. Without the bond there was no shared warning when the programming pressed him, no automatic transfer of strength. I only knew it was happening by the way his breathing changed and the amber in his eyes flickered under sudden black.Rafe kept pace as best he could on the rear, injured arm clamped against his side, the scavenged weapon held ready in his good hand. The green light swung wildly with every step, carving brief slices of rough stone and ancient support beams out of the dark before they vanished again.Behind us the pursuit was no longer distant.Varen’s group had found their rhythm in the tunnels. Their lights were stronger, their footing more certain. Every so often a suppression round cracked against the stone far too close for comfort, sending sharp echoes rac

The failsafe took Kael completely on the open ledge. One moment he was throwing his full weight against the massive seal, blood running freely down his side, amber still fighting in his eyes. The next moment the black swallowed everything. His body locked, then turned toward me with the empty, mechanical precision I had seen only once before right after the core finished the severance. The programming had control again. And this time there was nowhere to retreat. The ledge was narrow, the drop beyond it sheer, and Varen’s people were still forcing the seal open from the inside.“Kael,” I said, stepping directly into his path. “It is me. Elara. You know me.”No recognition. The black stare looked through me. His hand rose, claws extended, and closed around my upper arm with crushing strength. The order sitting in his head was clear even without the bond: secure the Resonator, prevent escape, return her to containment.Rafe forced himself upright against the rock wall, blade in his good

The first real light of morning made the western face of the mountain look larger and more exposed than it had in the dark.We moved in single file along the narrowing path, Kael in front, me in the middle, Rafe at the rear. The chemical light was gone. We no longer needed it. The gray predawn had given way to a thin, cold sunlight that picked out every loose stone and every place where the ledge had crumbled. The drop to the valley floor was clearer now. It was a long way down.Behind us, higher on the slope, the sounds of careful movement continued. Varen had found another route onto the face during the night. He was no longer forced to work through the sealed gate. He was on the same open rock as we were, and he was closing the distance.Kael’s pace was measured and controlled despite the obvious cost. Blood still seeped slowly through the bandages on his side. Every so often the failsafe surged and his steps hitched. Each time I saw the black rise in his eyes and the moment he had
