JasmineI was exhausted. Every few seconds, I found myself fighting the urge to rest my head on the desk and go to sleep. Davin’s voice carried through the lecture hall as he explained metabolic pathways, but concentrating was nearly impossible. Not because the lecture was boring.Because Mia and her friend wouldn’t shut up.Their constant giggling drifted across the room, pulling my attention away every few minutes.I clenched my jaw and tried to ignore it. And failed miserably. With a frustrated groan, I turned around sharply. “Can you both just shut it?” I gritted out.A few heads turned.Mia looked up from her phone and smiled. The kind that made me want to throw something.“Aw,” she said sweetly. “Someone’s cranky.”I turned away before I said something that would get me into trouble and forced my attention back to the front of the class.Davin continued his lecture as though nothing was happening. His voice was calm and steady, carrying easily through the hall. For a few seconds

JasmineI slammed the studio door behind me and stormed down the street. The argument kept replaying in my head, no matter how hard I tried to push it away. What exactly had I done wrong? All I wanted was to ask him about it.Was that such a crime?I hadn’t accused him of anything. I hadn’t judged him. If anything, I’d wanted to hear his side instead of blindly believing the rumors like everyone else seemed to.Yet he’d exploded just like that.I kicked a small stone out of my path and scowled.God, he was such an asshole. The rest of my walk home was spent mentally cursing Davin Jackson and every terrible decision that had somehow led me to him.If I’d never gone to that club that night, none of this would’ve happened. No arrangement. No ridiculous sessions.Nothing.By the time I reached my apartment building, all I wanted was a hot shower and several hours of uninterrupted sleep. Maybe then I’d finally be able to catch up on all the schoolwork I’d been neglecting. With a tired sigh

DavinSomething slammed into my arm. I groaned and rolled over, dragging the blanket with me as I tried to sink back into sleep.A second kick landed, harder this time.“Davin, get up, for fuck’s sake. Jesus.”My eyes flickered open, then immediately closed again.“What is all this, man?” Lucas demanded, his voice way too loud for this early in the morning. Or maybe that was the hangover talking. Probably both.I heard him moving around the studio, mumbling his displeasure under his breath. A few seconds later, sunlight shone across my face, and I hissed, throwing an arm over my eyes.“What the heck?”I slowly pushed myself upright, and the moment I did, I regretted it instantly. My hand shot to my temple.“Fuck, my head,” I muttered, the ache hitting in waves.“Well, good morning to you too, sunshine.”I squinted at him. He stood by the window with his arms folded across his chest, looking thoroughly unimpressed, and honestly, the studio looked even worse in daylight.Half-finished c

JasmineBy the time I left the last store, I was ready to scream. Half the places I’d gone to weren’t hiring, and the other half had no vacancies. The sun beat down relentlessly, making the back of my neck sticky with sweat as I walked down the sidewalk in defeat.Maybe I should just call it a day. Go home, eat something, spend a few hours at the library catching up on schoolwork, then try again tomorrow. It wasn’t like I had much of a choice. With a tired sigh, I flagged down a cab and gave the driver my address. The ride home was quiet. I spent most of it staring out the window, mentally calculating bills, groceries, textbooks, and all the other things I couldn’t afford to ignore. By the time we pulled up to my building, my stomach was already growling.I kicked off my shoes, dropped my bag on the couch, and headed straight for the kitchen. The moment I opened the fridge, I froze.Empty. Completely empty.I stared at it for a second before letting the door swing shut, then leaned my

JasmineIt really was true what they said. You could meet the person who changed your life in the most unexpected place.A week ago, I’d helped a stranger pay a three-dollar bill. In return, she’d given me a job... and a three-hundred-dollar tip that had nearly made me cry right there in her diner. The first thing I’d done was buy the textbooks I’d been putting off all semester. After that, I sent extra money home for my mom’s medication. And now? Now I was standing behind the counter in a grey shirt and black pants, an order pad in one hand and a pen in the other, smiling so much my cheeks hurt.“Good afternoon. Welcome to Peggy’s Diner,” I greeted the couple who had just walked in. “What can I get for you?”“I’ll have the open-faced steak sandwich and a large soda.”“Got it,” I said, scribbling it down. “We’ll have that out in a few minutes.”I’d only been working here for five days, but I already loved it. The staff were friendly, the customers were mostly kind, and Peggy... Peggy
