Sabriel's POV The heat in the makeshift medical tent felt like a wall of fire pressing down on my chest, and every breath I took burned my throat because the poison Zareth had pulled from my shoulder was still trying to finish me off from the inside, leaving me shaking and sweating on the narrow cot while James sat right beside me on a wooden stool with a damp cloth in his hand. "Stop moving around," James said, pressing the cold cloth gently against my forehead, and his voice sounded tighter and more worried than I had ever heard it before, "you are going to tear the stitches right back open if you keep tossing from side to side." "My skin feels like it is on fire, James," I gasped, clutching the edge of the thin blanket with both hands as another wave of pain shot down my spine, "and you sitting there telling me to stay still is not helping me feel any better." "Well, Zareth said the antidote takes time to clear the poison out of your blood," James replied, wiping sweat from my

Zareth's POV The cold wind blowing through the open tent flap bit straight through my jacket, and I stood by the wooden cot throwing my gear into a leather bag while my head throbbed with a dull, heavy ache that would not go away, because using all that magic to pull James and Sabriel back from the edge had drained every drop of energy out of my bones, leaving my hands shaking as I tried to strap my boots tight. "You should not be moving around so fast, Zar," Sabriel said, walking into the tent with her bandaged shoulder held stiffly, and she looked at me with deep worry in her eyes while leaning against the canvas pole for support, "you were unconscious for six hours, and your magic nearly killed you out there in the clearing." "I do not have time to lie around resting when we know Vane and his people have control of the palace," I answered, grabbing my sword belt and buckling it around my waist with a sharp click, "and my head feels like someone is pouring boiling water insi

I woke up coughing hard on the stone floor while thick smoke filled the grand hall and stung my eyes, and Kaelor was kneeling right beside me with his hands firmly on my shoulders, asking me if I was breathing okay and telling me to stay down because the room was shaking, but I pushed his hands away and told him I needed to get up because we could not just lie there while the capital fell apart around us. "I am awake," I rasped out, coughing again as the smoke hit my throat, and I pushed myself up onto my elbows while the floor beneath us split open with a loud pop, releasing a freezing mist that chilled my blood instantly and made my teeth chatter, so I grabbed Kaelor's arm and told him we needed to move away from the cracks right now. Before Kaelor could pull me up to my feet, a low rumble shook the whole room, and the mist billowed higher, wrapping around our boots while Vane stepped out from behind a shattered marble pillar with a bloody smile on his face, clapping his hands sl

(POV: Sabriel) The gravel crunched beneath my boots as I walked along the winding paths of the inner palace gardens, and I kept my hand resting near the hilt of my sword while wincing slightly every time my left arm moved, because the shoulder wound Zareth had healed the night before was still throbbing with a dull ache that reminded me I should not even be walking around outside yet, but I knew I could not just sit in a medical tent while scattered cultists were running loose through the palace grounds trying to ambush our wounded guards. "Anybody out here?" I muttered to myself, scanning the dark shadows cast by the tall hedges and stone statues, and I reached up to adjust the bandages under my jacket, hoping I would not run into a whole group of fighters before I found a place to sit down for a minute, but right as I rounded the corner near the stone fountain, a man wearing a dark cloak rushed out from behind the bushes and nearly knocked me straight onto the ground. "Watch wher

(POV: Kaelor) The torch flickered against the damp stone walls as I pushed my way deeper into the subterranean tunnels beneath the throne room, following the glowing trail of dark magic and drying blood that Vane had left behind when he escaped through the trapdoor, because I knew if I did not catch him down here before he reached the final chamber, the whole capital was going to fall apart around our ears. "You are not getting away from me today, Vane," I muttered under my breath, speeding up my pace while holding my sword ready in my right hand, and I turned a sharp corner into a wider corridor that led straight toward the ancient seal chamber, where the sound of chanting was echoing off the low ceiling. "Looking for someone, Your Majesty?" Vane's voice bounced off the walls ahead of me, and I stopped walking as he stepped out from the shadows near a massive wooden door, holding a bloody knife in his hand while a twisted grin spread across his face. "Open that door and tell me h
