Blake arrived at the estate two evenings later, later than he usually visited, and Nadia noticed immediately that he'd come alone, without the folder of foundation paperwork he typically carried as a pretext. "You said this wasn't about the foundation," Caiden said once they had settled in the study, the September evening cold enough that he'd lit the fire without being asked. "It isn't," Blake said. For the first time in the fourteen years Caiden had known him, he looked genuinely uncertain about how to begin.
