Jack finally walked Lela to the front porch. The porch light cast a warm glow across the steps as the evening air settled around them."I had a wonderful time," Lela said."So did I."Jack smiled before becoming serious again."I know today was...a lot.""It was."She stepped closer to him."But I'm glad you told me.""So am I."He gently brushed his thumb across her cheek."I'll call you tomorrow.""I'll be waiting."He leaned down and kissed her softly before walking back toward his truck.Lela stood on the porch watching until his taillights disappeared around the corner.Only then did she go inside. The next morning, the smell of fresh coffee drifted through the Moretti home.Mrs. Moretti stood at the kitchen island slicing strawberries while humming softly to herself.Lela slowly walked in with her coffee mug."Morning, sweetheart.""Morning, Mom."Pamela immediately noticed something different."You look happy."Lela smiled."I am."Pamela poured her a cup of coffee."Tell me ab

The next two weeks seemed to pass in the blink of an eye.For Lela, every day brought another milestone.Emily had finally cleared her to walk without her crutch around the house, though she still carried it on longer outings."Just don't get overconfident," Emily reminded her after another therapy session.Lela laughed."I've learned that lesson already."Jack was waiting in the lobby when she finished. As always. He stood the moment he saw her."How'd you do?"Emily answered before Lela could."She's doing great."Jack's face lit up."I knew you could do it."Lela rolled her eyes playfully."You two celebrate every little thing.""Because every little thing matters," Jack replied. He slipped his hand into hers as they walked toward the parking lot."So..."She smiled."So?""This weekend."Lela's stomach fluttered."This weekend."Jack nodded."Monica comes Friday afternoon.""You'll pick her up?""At three."He smiled to himself."I haven't seen her in almost two weeks."Lela watch

Saturday morning arrived much earlier than either Jack or Lela expected.Lela had been awake since six o'clock. She changed outfits three times before finally settling on a light blue sundress with white sneakers. She looked at herself in the mirror and laughed."I'm meeting a two-year-old," she whispered."Not interviewing for a job."Downstairs, Pamela smiled as Lela walked into the kitchen."You look beautiful.""You think so?""I do."Lela sighed."I'm nervous."Pamela poured her a cup of coffee."Good.""Why is that good?""Because it means this matters to you."Frank walked into the kitchen."Ready?""I think so."He hugged her."Just remember...""She doesn't need perfection.""She just needs someone willing to play."Lela smiled."I can do that."Across town, Jack stood outside a small daycare classroom. The moment the teacher opened the door, a tiny blur with dark curls came running toward him."DADDYYYY!"Jack dropped to one knee just as Monica launched herself into his arms

Sunday afternoon arrived far sooner than any of them wanted. The weekend had disappeared in a blur of pancakes, dinosaur books, the zoo, ice cream, bedtime stories, and endless giggles.Lela stood in Jack's kitchen loading the last few breakfast dishes into the dishwasher while Monica sat at the table coloring."I making one more picture."Lela smiled over her shoulder."I can't wait to see it."Jack walked in carrying an overnight bag filled with Monica's pajamas, favorite blanket, stuffed puppy, and coloring books."I think we have everything."Monica looked up."No."Jack frowned."No?""I need dis."She held up the drawing she had been working on.Jack walked over.It was another picture of the three of them.Only this time there was a huge yellow sun in the corner and what looked like an ice cream cone almost as big as Monica herself.Jack smiled."Tell me about it."Monica pointed."Dat me."Then another."Dat Daddy."Then Lela."Dat pretty Lela."She pointed toward the giant ic

The wooden spoon traced lazy circles through the sauce, each rotation releasing a burst of basil and tomato that hung in the warm kitchen air. Lela hummed along to the playlist drifting from her phone propped against the backsplash — something acoustic and unhurried that matched the rhythm of her stirring. The burner flickered blue beneath the pot, and steam curled upward, fogging the edge of the window where evening light was just beginning to soften. The apartment had gone quiet again. Only hours ago, the space had been a different creature entirely — filled with the particular chaos that a four-year-old brings. Monica's laughter had bounced off every wall, her small sneakers slapping against the hardwood as she'd raced from room to room, her chatter endless and bright and punctuated by questions about everything she touched. Now the evidence remained in scattered traces: a tiny shoe near the couch, a crayon drawing taped to the refrigerator at a child's eye level, the faint sticky
