As we got closer to my parents' neighborhood, my phone suddenly rang. The sound startled me.I looked down at the screen.Chris.Immediately, my stomach tightened. Not because I was afraid to answer.Because I knew the evening was about to collide with reality.Jack glanced over."You okay?"I looked at the screen for a moment before answering."Yeah."But honestly, I wasn't sure.I took a deep breath and answered the call."Hello."There was a pause. Then Chris's voice."Where are you?"I looked out the window."Out.""Obviously."His tone wasn't angry.Just confused."I went to dinner.""Dinner?""Yes."There was another pause.Longer this time."With who?"I closed my eyes briefly.I had spent years avoiding difficult conversations.Avoiding conflict.Avoiding decisions. But suddenly I felt tired.Tired of avoiding things.Tired of pretending.Tired of waiting for circumstances to change on their own.So instead of creating another excuse, I told the truth."With Jack."The silence

As I walked up the driveway, the front door opened before I could reach it.Of course it did.My mother stood there smiling. My father stood a few feet behind her. Both pretending they hadn't been watching out the window.I held up the white rose."Seriously?"Mom laughed."What?""You were spying.""We were not.""Dad?"My father immediately pointed at my mother."Her idea.""Traitor," Mom said.I laughed and stepped inside. The warmth of the house immediately wrapped around me.Home.For the first time all evening, I realized how tired I was.Emotionally exhausted. The kind of exhaustion that comes after making life-changing decisions.Mom looked at the clock."Oh my goodness."I glanced over.It was after midnight."No wonder I'm tired."Mom smiled."Well, before you tell us every detail..."Dad laughed."Oh, she's definitely telling us every detail."Mom shook her head."Not tonight."I looked surprised."Really?"She nodded."Really."Then she kissed me on the forehead."You've h

After finishing my coffee, I headed upstairs to change. The restless feeling hadn't gone away.If anything, it had gotten stronger.I needed movement.I needed fresh air.I needed time to think.Running had always been my way of sorting through life. Whenever things became overwhelming, I laced up my shoes and hit the road. Some people went to therapy.I went running.A few minutes later, I was standing in my old bedroom stretching. The same bedroom where I had spent countless mornings getting ready for school, dates, family vacations, and every major event of my life.Funny how life has a way of bringing you full circle. As I bent down to stretch my hamstrings, I caught my reflection in the mirror. For a moment, I barely recognized myself. Not because I looked different.Because I looked lighter. The problems hadn't disappeared. The difficult conversations still waited. The move still had to happen. But somehow, the weight I'd been carrying felt different.Manageable.I finished stre

Chris stood near the door for several seconds after unlocking it.Neither of us moved. The room felt heavy.Years of memories seemed to be packed into those boxes right alongside my clothes. Finally, he spoke."Lela, please."I closed my eyes for a moment."Chris.""No, just listen."His voice was desperate now.The kind of desperation that comes when someone realizes they are losing something they always assumed would be there."I can change."I slowly looked at him.His eyes were red.Whether from lack of sleep, stress, or the drinking that had become more frequent over the last few years, I couldn't tell."I can fix this."I shook my head."Chris...""No."He stepped closer."We're supposed to be together."The words hurt.Because there had been a time when I believed them.A time when I couldn't imagine my life without him.A time when I would have fought for us no matter what. But that time had passed. Not overnight. Not because of one argument. Not because of one bad decision.I

Instead of heading straight back to my parents' house, I kept driving.I wasn't avoiding home.I just wasn't ready to go there yet.Not after everything that had happened. Not after the conversation with Chris. Not after packing up years of memories and loading them into the back of my car.I needed space.I needed air. Most importantly, I needed silence.Without really thinking about it, I found myself heading toward the Valley. It had always been one of my favorite places.Whenever life became overwhelming, I ended up there.Sometimes to think.Sometimes to cry.Sometimes to clear my head. And sometimes for no reason at all.The Valley was one of the few places where I could hear myself think. The roads wound through familiar hills and trees. The scenery looked exactly the same as it had when I was younger.Beautiful.Peaceful.Unaffected by the chaos of everyone else's lives.I finally pulled into one of my favorite spots overlooking the valley below. After shutting off the engine,
