66: Corvin's note: Part 2

The children interrupt official proceedings without apparent fear. After a moment he added:No one appears bothered by this. The realization stayed with him.Yet these children moved through the palace as though it belonged to them.As though they expected to be welcomed wherever they wentWhich meant it probably was.The meeting continued for several more hours.By the end, every major issue had been resolved.Objectively, it was one of the most successful diplomatic sessions Corvin had attended in years.Yet somehow it wasn't what he remembered most. That happened afterward. As he prepared to leave, he passed through one of the palace gardens.Voices drifted from somewhere nearby.Children's voices.Curious despite himself, he glanced toward the sound.Lyanna sat beneath a tree with a book open in her lap.Kael sat beside her.Neither noticed Corvin. They were focused entirely on the person sitting opposite them. This time there were no towers.Just a quiet afternoon in a garden.Ly

67: What cassian has been counting

He did not intend for Adrian to find out. That was the first thing. He had been careful, in the particular way he was careful about things that mattered too much to risk disrupting — the research kept in his private study, the consultations conducted through Kieran rather than palace healers who would mention it, the books returned to their shelves before Adrian had reason to be in that room.He had been looking for three years. Not obsessively. He was not someone who functioned well under obsession, having learned centuries ago that obsession narrowed the field of available options rather than expanding it. He looked steadily, methodically, the way he did everything — identifying the most credible sources, following the most promising threads, setting aside the things that were clearly impossible and focusing on the things that were merely very difficult. He had found nothing. Not yet. He told himself not yet.The books were on his desk the afternoon Lyanna came to return a volume sh

68: The beard incident

The annual integration summit was the largest gathering of its kind — three days of meetings, meals, and carefully managed interaction between delegates from seventeen kingdoms and territories, human and demon alike, designed to demonstrate that cooperation was not only possible but functional. It was not designed for a three-year-old with no concept of diplomatic propriety.Kael attended because Adrian had made a decision about visibility, about what it meant to bring their family into public life rather than keeping it separate, and because in theory three-year-olds could be managed. In practice, Kael could technically be managed in the sense that he responded to redirection, he simply also immediately forgot the redirection had occurred and returned to whatever he had been doing. The first incident happened during the opening reception.Kael, who had been holding Cassian's hand and being admirably stationary for approximately twelve minutes, noticed the centerpiece flower arrangeme

69: Lyanna at seven

On the morning of Lyanna's seventh birthday she woke before anyone else, which was usual, and went to the library, which was also usual, and took down the astronomy book that had been hers since the first month, which was usual, and sat in the chair by the window in the early light and opened it to the page about nebulae, which was where she always started. The palace was quiet around her. The garden was doing something grey and soft with the dawn. She had the particular contentment of someone who had found, at seven, the things that made them feel most themselves, and had the unusual good fortune of being in a place that allowed for them.Cassian found her there when he came to get a book he'd left the previous evening. He stood for a moment in the doorway, watching her in the early light — silver hair catching the grey dawn, book on her lap, completely absorbed, completely at ease. She looked up when she heard him."Good morning," she said."Happy birthday," he said. She looked at t

70: Five years

Five years after the children came home, Lyanna turned nine and Kael turned seven, and the palace had long since reorganized itself around the fact of them in the way that spaces reorganized around permanent inhabitants. The library had a section that was specifically Lyanna's, not formally designated but understood by everyone who used the space — three shelves at her eye level that migrated upward every year as she grew, currently containing astronomy, advanced magic theory, two volumes of demon history, and one novel that she had read six times and would not discuss the contents of with anyone, which Adrian respected and Cassian found mysterious and Kael had attempted to read the summary of and found boring, which Lyanna considered appropriate. Kael had opinions about the garden that had been formally incorporated into the garden planning. The head gardener had, after two years of Kael's involvement, accepted that certain areas near the fountain were under the operational manage

71: Lyra's institution

The building had been a warehouse before Lyra got hold of it.That was two years ago. Now it had twelve rooms, a training courtyard, a legal aid office on the ground floor, and a hand-painted sign above the door that read The Ashford Foundation for Choice, which was what they had named it after three weeks of arguing about what to call something that was essentially a refuge, a school, and a revolution housed in the same building.Adrian visited on a Thursday in early autumn, without announcement, the way he preferred to visit things that mattered — not as an inspection but as a presence, someone who wanted to see what was actually happening rather than what would be arranged for an official visit.Lyra met him at the door. She was twenty now, which he still occasionally found surprising, having known her as a ten-year-old spy in palace corridors not so long ago by the measure of his own life. She was not surprising in any other respect. She had grown into exactly what she had been wh

72: What kael knows about loss

For three days, Kael carried the question without asking it.Every time he looked at Adrian, the question returned.Kael was eleven when he asked Cassian the question that neither of them had been circling exactly but which had been in the vicinity of every conversation they'd had for a year. They were in the garden, which was where they ended up when neither of them had specifically planned to be anywhere. The birds were doing their ordinary bird things near the fountain. The evening was warm. Kael had been quiet for longer than usual, which with Kael was always a sign that something was composing itself."When Dada dies," Kael said, "are you going to be okay?"Cassian was quiet for a moment. "What makes you ask?""I've been thinking about it," Kael said, with the matter-of-fact quality of someone who had taken something out, examined it, and decided to name it. "You're immortal. He isn't. I've known that since I was little. I just haven't asked about it.""Why now?"Kael looked at t

73: The shadow garden

The thing Lyanna created when she was twelve was not planned. That was the first unusual thing about it. Lyanna planned everything — the books she would read, the order in which she would read them, the magic she would practice and when and for how long. She had been methodical since she was five. Improvisation was not her natural mode. But on a Saturday afternoon in late spring she was in the garden practicing a shadow flower variation that she had been working on for three weeks, and something happened that was not any version of what she had been attempting, and instead of dissolving into the usual failure it persisted, and then expanded, and then became something else entirely.Adrian found her an hour later standing in the center of what had been a perfectly ordinary section of the palace garden and was now something he did not have a name for. Shadow bloomed from the ground and the air simultaneously, dark flowers that held their shape with more substance than they had any righ

74: Unchanged

The thing about Cassian was that he looked exactly the same.Adrian had known this going in, in the abstract way you knew things before they were real. He had understood intellectually that immortality meant not aging, that Cassian would remain while he did not, that this was the nature of what they were to each other and he had accepted it.Acceptance and daily confrontation with a fact were different things.A month earlier, Kael had asked Adrian to help him find an old photograph. What should have been a simple task became an entire afternoon. The photograph itself was eventually located inside a box in the library storage room, but by then neither of them had been looking for it anymore. They had found albums.Hundreds of photographs collected over the years.Kael sat cross-legged on the floor flipping through pages while Adrian sat beside him.At first it was amusing.Lyanna at six holding a book larger than her torso.Kael at four covered in mud and entirely unapologetic about i

75: What kael does

When Kael was sixteen he started going to the mixed community near the eastern edge of the capital on Thursday afternoons.Nobody asked him to. There was no official program he had signed up for, no assignment or initiative or organized effort. He simply appeared, one Thursday, at the community center that had been operating for six years as a gathering point for the neighborhood, and asked if there was anything useful he could do.The woman who ran the center, a demon in her eighties named Yeva who had seen several empires begin and end and had opinions about all of them, looked at him for a moment. Then she gave him a list of things that needed doing and waited to see what happened."Can you lift boxes?" Yeva asked.Kael blinked."Yes.""Good. Storage room."That was his first assignment.Three hours later he had moved furniture, organized supplies, repaired two broken shelves, carried soup to an elderly resident, and accidentally spent forty minutes listening to a retired blacksmit
